Oh I had aux fan resistor failure the second day I owned my 500 SEC. That was back in 2018 on the hottest day of the year and it was scary. Temp almost redlined. I pulled over, turned the ac off and blasted the heater a bit, which dropped the temp a little. I then parked under a tree and let it cool for an hour. At that point I drove straight to the one euro guy ion town I knew of (temp was around 90) and he discovered the aux fan was not spinning. All is well now, of course, but that scared the shit out of me. I had literally received delivery on the damned car the day before! The PPI the car had in California did not turn this up so PPI's are only as good as the man doing it AND as far as he takes it. It should be noted (for those who are curious) that my temps are typically about 8 to 83 when warmed up and even under a heavy load they don't go much higher. I never see 90 so everything is right where it should be for about 27 months now.

Had a similar moment in France over summer, was hauling up a incline with the car loaded up on a really hot day and the temperature for the first time since owning it went over 100 Celsius. Probably got to around 105 and settled. But like you, normally the temperature sticks just over 80 so it’ll be interesting to see if replacing my corroded resistor solves the problem.

Great videos Pierre. Fellow 30 year MB tech here that surprisingly also lived in Titusville off Singleton. I really appreciate your experience and sharing with us. Keep up the great work!

My 0.2 resistor was completely fried (w124). I just skipped it, connecting the wires so that it works full speed. I find it actually works fine since I'm at Greece (95-105° F at summer). Is that a "don't do"? Also the fun never comes on when the AC is off, even when the engine overheats.... That really boggles me because if I unplug the coolant temperature sensor the fun comes on full speed. I've just changed the sensor as well with no difference. W124 89' 200E. Thank you sooo much for all of your help, and wish you all the best!!!

I'll definitely have to check mine since its the worst case scenario. 85' 500 SEL, would be the buried version your speaking of, and since the maintenance schedule is very sketchy, it going to happen after I do drive train inspections which will be first anyways. Already heard all about the plastic oiler fittings for the overhead camshafts causing wear, along with the tensioners going foul, and causing cam chain wear. Long road ahead my friend.

Timely video! Looked in my W126 the other day, the ceramic body of the resistor has cracked and the connectors are rusty! Seems to be working (maybe intermittently) but could explain the needle crept over 100 Celsius on a long uphill on a hot summer day while holding a steady 80mph.

Thank you brother! I've been banging ny head against the wall on this one. Nothing happens when jumping the wires from the aux fan switch at the drier which had me stumped. Unless I am missing something I think it's the resistor. Which I did not know existed but I was thinking something like it was the issue. 12 volts respectively at the switch on the drier. You are very helpfull and selfless thank you very much!!!

Interestingly on RHD W126 models its behind the left hand headlight and very accessible.

Just to add something... on my W140 I need to short the fan sensor terminals (together) to trigger the fans.

could you please talk about 96 to 99 S500 coupe m119 auxiliary fans are not turning on. AC temp. sensor wires are cooked is that effect the fans not to turn on. Thank you.

Can you make a video about the w123 280c? Specifically, what should I be willing to pay for a nice one and were they available with manual transmissions?
