Had Taycan for 1.5yr, 28k miles. It’s so much fun to drive if you can escape traffic. As you say Porsche has its tax and that’s options. Agree that many make sense and you can really get just the car you want and have it unlikely to match any other one with over 50 options. Now with paint to sample and deviated stitching there is no end of uniqueness. 😎 Nice summaries on each car.

Taycan all day any day

Two completely different cars! The EQS is purely for comfort. The Porsche is a sports car

Awesome review, very fair and objective as always. For me the Taycan is the best EV on the market. I love the exterior styling and the interior design is just a beautiful blend of style, function and quality unmatched on any other car. The exterior design of the EQS suffers from the same curious blandness found on Teslas - good aero I am sure but the result is a characterless and cheap looking. I’d also forego the unnecessarily long range and weight of the EQS for the better driving dynamics of the Porsche. Great comparison review but for me it’s an easy win for the Taycan.

You just know what car you should go for when the reviewer (very good job by the way) smiles a few times when driving one of them, but does not when driving the other.

Great video by @CarGurus. You did this fantastic comparison justice albeit they are not directly comparable. I must say the "Hyperscreen" is a lazy overrated feature.

A slight clarification in case anyone is interested... In the UK market the EQS 450+ Luxury variant has Artico vegan upholstery, available in a choice of three colours as it happens. The EQS 450+ Exclusive Luxury variant though and all AMG variants are not available with Artico vegan upholstery. Which is very bad and silly, it has to be said, especially as the EQ range are obviously electric vehicles and therefore supposedly designed with the environment and good ethics in mind. Model variants in other countries have varying names and options, and so availability of vegan Artico may vary from country to country. The configurator on the USA website does not have any Artico options at all for any model variant, although this may be an error... The Artico options may simply be mislabeled as leather. I can't imagine why they wouldn't have any vegan options in the USA market. Anyway, Vicky must have the Exclusive Luxury variant in this video which indeed does have animal leather and no vegan option. The non-Exclusive Luxury variant is vegan though

EQS is closer to a competitor to a Panamera if it was electrified. Taycan is more of a 4 door sports car.

I remember when you (Vicki) previewed the 7th gen Golf (in Spain, I think). I eventually bought a GTI version once they arrived over here in the states. You've been one of the best car reviewers (journalist) in the business and I'm so glad you landed in CarGurus! After your review of the Golf, I was happy to wait until it became available here and (so far) it's been a great car. I have the 7.5 and the only downside is the throttle mapping which gives too much emphasis on economy over performance. Still, if I want it to go, the DSG is always ready. Once I give it a quick downshift and plant the gas, it shoots ahead of any slow-moving merging traffic. Very handy. As for this comparison, I'd take the Porsche, hands-down. The M-B is just too ugly and overly-dependent on tech. All those screens are just too distracting. I hope manufacturers will take the Mazda approach and set up interiors to keep your eyes on the road, not on interfaces trying to compete with the latest generation iPhones. We need smart tech, not just more of it.

The Taycan is definitely the eye catching supercar competitor, whereas the EQS is more the spacious luxury family car

Great review again Vicky. Fair and balanced. Hyper screen in EQS is an £8k option which is the price of most of the Porsche options which should be standard. Personal view EQS is one of the few cars that’s uglier in the flesh than in photos, particularly the front.

Excellent review. And I agree with your conclusion as well. Both are superb vehicles one with a sport flair the other one more comfort oriented. However the Mercedes is by far the most logical buy as an everyday driver given its much better range and spacious people and cargo accommodations. One thing I'd quibble, however, is which Porsche model to go for. Given that all models are going to have the same limitations given its architecture why not go out and buy the whole enchilada and get the turbo, since the Porsche is the fun fat one of the bunch why not get the truly fast one? I know the answer..... Its ridiculously expensive but, none of these vehicles is exactly for the masses. It's a shame to buy a Porsche that will get creamed by an EQS 580 (only a little more than a fully optioned 450) at every stoplight!

I'm not even watching the video because I don't want an EV. BUT the Taycan is a stunning car. Wish it had a petrol engine.

A high performance 1970 Corvette with a 454 cubic inch engine, 4 speed 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. These EV’s are plenty fast. I own a Model X and Model 3. I own solar panels/powerwall battery. I save $400/month on gas and home electricity. I can not control healthcare costs but can control energy costs. I fly when I travel. Never used a supercharger. My new 2017 Model X with over 50,000 miles never been to service center. Only maintenance are tires. I do also own a Porsche Panamera 4S. Probably trade in for Taycan.

How can most of your commentary indicate that the Porsche is far superior and then you conclude that Mercedes wins the comparison? I don’t think so.

As always, Vicky, a wonderfully 'objective' comparison video from you - great content. And, what an interesting duo to compare, too - I, for one, would not have thought these two would come together in a comparison, but, hey, that's why they pay you the big bucks...! I have to say, though, that I was actually surprised at your decision, too - I've watched MANY, many of your past videos and you're always open with your preference for a more sports-oriented car to drive. So, for you to pick the EQS as your choice here came as quite a shock...! But, I'm secretly rather glad, too - as much as the Porsche is the driver's-choice 'poster-child' of the EV world, no doubt absolutely engrossing and taut to drive on a favourite backroad blast, for the day-to-day schlep that most car owners have to endure, over the UK's ever-more pot-holed roads network, comfort is king, for sure...! Having said that, neither of these cars is even attainable for 'most car owners', so where do we look for our family-friendly, more affordable EVs...? Funnily enough, towards the only other 'estate' EV, probably... The MG5... Superbly cosseting ride... plenty-enough tech for most users... a 7 year warranty with a near 300 mile range... and all for less than 1/3 the price of these 2...!! 😉

An interesting if slightly unbalanced review.. Yes the Porsche maybe more "fun" to drive, But can you really call it a "Sports Gran Tourer", with a "real world" range of just 150 or so miles...?? Not in my books..!!

The EQS looks like a Leaf. I really don't like the exterior of that car, it looks so ordinary. Very disappointed.

EQS is kind of semi-finished product. Ugly exterior and bad backseat experience. If Porsche launches the long-range version taycan, EQS has no chance to win.
