The C215 shape Mercedes-Benz CL class is an extremely undervalued luxury GT on the used market, and in a similar way to the Jaguar XJR, actually offers a phenomenal amount of sheer bang for buck as a luxury performance car experience on a shoestring budget.
Here in V12 engined CL600 form you have a prime example of this, but it also begs the question of why these cars are so cheap, and if they are a risky proposition when used. Let's review the Mercedes CL600 V12 and find out exactly what this two door S-Class brings to the proverbial table...

I owned a 2000 CL500, bought at 8 years old and only 50k on the clock. Very much a love hate relationship. Electrical gremlins mostly, once tried to squash me into the steering wheel at 60 after going over a large dip - door cables! Corrosion also a constant battle and gear box electro plate. Would love a CL55K but still warey. Much preferred my rare CL500 5.5 - Very nearly as quick as a CL55K and almost as much space but far far more reliable and still a comfy cruiser.

I have a 2004 CL55 AMG and these are awesome cars Love your video and your style You are right with big bills if you have an island, but if you get one that’s been looked after and you maintain it, it’s so well built it should be a reliable car for years

I owned a 2003 S430 - not a CL and not a V12, I know. But, in terms of ride quality, reliability and sheer enjoyment it was bullet proof. So much so, I replaced it with an 2006 S500 and it was all of those things - but a bit more so. I haven't driven a Bentley, but I simply can't imagine it being that much better. Would I do it all again - you bet I would.

Another outstanding work, m8! It's a bit ironic (in a very good way)...I've been more hyped about older Mercs lately, reading/researching/watching videos of them, from this period and back. And among them, of course, the C215. And now you post this video. The M137 engine is a bit of an oddball...it doesn't have the aura and fame as the older M120, the heart of the Zonda's...yet neither has the brutality of its younger, twin turbo sibling, the M275...so it kinda stays in some sort of 'gap', per se... That being said, AMG did make a 6.3L version of this engine, with 438 hp and 457 lb-ft, for the very rare (only 26 units produced) 2001 CL63 AMG. And being a naturally aspirated V12, this engine has amazing potential for sound, as we already know by some Japanese folks who turned it into an F1-sounding machine, just like the M120... In this case the sedan, but the engine is the same, so it's okay. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5uKfNKeytqciZ8.html About the cassette player...oh well, I don't mind...nowadays, with those tape-like bluetooth adapters, I think that problem is solved. And it allows those who like to preserve the original characteristics to keep the stock system in use. And about the CL55, in the same period this N/A V12 was offered, the CL55 also was naturally aspirated, with pretty much the same power/torque figures as the V12 (355 hp/391 lb-ft), but with a lighter front end (because V8 vs V12) and a sportier suspension, that one is more fitting if you fancy a more aggressive driving...though, of course, that still doesn't mean it's a racecar, hehe These cars were the latest and greatest when I was a kid, so they're all special to me, childhood heroes...and definitely would be my purchase options over the newer models.

Nice one, and yeah I've considered a C216 shape CL myself a number of times, with the occasional CL63 coming in at similar prices to Quattroporte's and XKR's. But the pricing on all things Mercedes are daunting even for a risky buyer like me

@@beardsncars True. But on the bright side, at least when it comes to the older models, despite the crazy-high prices, Mercedes takes great care of its old models through its Classic Centers. According to what I've read, they provide genuine parts, repairs, restorations, and information for and sales of historic Mercedes-Benz vehicles that are at least 15 years out of production, so this should include the 215, at least. They even help with information and documentation on their vehicles. It's far from cheap, but it's reassuring that you'll still be able to use your classic for many many years. And even though the 215 was created with some cost-cutting mindset, compared to the C140, I think it's still a durable car...more so than the newer generations, at least.

The ADC suspension system would scare me away.

@@jamesreckling6697 Yeah, it is troublesome and scary when it fails. But nowadays it's easier to fix this. Reading on the internet, you can find great advices on how to fix and maintain them, if you want to keep the system. Or, if you wanna simplify your life and remove it, Strutmasters offers a conversion kit to replace them for conventional shocks and springs. Just don't forget to include a swaybar from the S-Class. All in all, if you're keen into doing some maintenance yourself, you can enjoy these cars for a fraction of the cost shops will charge. If you send it to shops, of course they're gonna charge an arm and a leg to fix it. In my opinion it's worth an investment even in a Mercedes STAR diagnostic computer. But then again, I'm not a reference, 'cause I'm that crazy. 🤣 Most people wouldn't care about these things, but I'd be willing to learn everything I could to work on my cars myself...

I owned a CL500, it was a great car and I paid £1000. Drove it for a year and it failed its MOT to the tune of £3500 to fix, so I scrapped it. Not a bad years motoring really, I'd definitely have another it was a great car.

Funny as it sounds I saw v12 cl600 2yrs ago knowing one May need steal balls I bit bullet a bought one I sold it a few months ago & guess what I bought a Maserati 4200gt . Loved the CL a great deal the way it drove comfort and sound of which I opened up with straight pipes😂…the Maserati was good too I sold it after 3 months because it that car was driven on a time bomb literally as you can not trust it may just give up on something but however I didn’t get to experience the bad side of owning a mazza apart from realising I’m into an Italian car not like German cars . I now own 911 4S and CLS63 shooting brake😊

Cheap Mercs and AMGs do definitely have an intimidating heir to them when it comes to reliability. I've gone back and forth many times on the next generation of these, the C216 shape, which I find to be one of the best looking cars ever made. But everything just seems needlessly expensive even compared to Maserati's and Jags for similar money.

I have bought a 2003 E500 Sport that needed the air suspension redone and some other little things, did the work myself and that was the most reliable Mercedes the engines and transmissions are bullet proof, nothing to be afraid of. Mad at myself for selling it at 167k it was perfect. I am looking at the CL class now of the same era. Great Video keep them coming! Cheers 🍻
