Thank you so much for sharing this video and so precise instructions. My car is a S550 model, exact same configuration for this ventilation PVC piece. The screws were Torx though (2011 model W221), but with the right socket, and specially, with knowing what to expect because of your instructional video, I was able to successfully replace it. As you state, with time and temperature fluctuations, the gasket degrades and allows oil to leak out. That was the case with my car. The mechanic wanted $225 plus MB original part $95, I completely understand they have to charge for their labor, and they have a lot of overhead, but this alternative sounded more reasonable to me.

Great video. I came out today to find a burning smell oil under that area. Was expecting it to be a major $$$ repair but springily it's only $100 and that also includes the 3 plugs/caps that should be changed as well since they are right there. One of the caps you can see in your video after you replaced the breather assembly.

Torx 10 (E10) is the correct size for removing the screws. You can also use a 5/16 wrench for the bottom screws. The process worked great on my 2008 C300 to replace this Oil Air Separator part. Just removed and replaced it using your video - did the Loctite too. Thanks!!

I was just told by MB of Draper UT my valve needed replacement. They said MB covers the part and replacement in an 'extended manufactures' warranty as this is a common problem. They also said the item is on back order across the country. 2016 MB C300. I was told without the extended manufactures warranty the cost would be around 1,800.

You can also install a oil catch can. Once I replace that on our GL320 cdi, a catch can is next on the project list. The hoses should also be replaced

Thanks for the great video. The local Euro "expert" mechanics wanted to charge 1.5 hours of shop time to replace this part. I had zero experience but still managed to I change it myself in only 30mins.
@rustyshackleford5163 ай бұрын
that time includes diag, paying the mechanic, and actual labor for replacement of the faulty part. having owned and worked in a few shops I can tell you that there is significant cost just to keep the lights on in a shop...if all shops just gave away labor out of convenience to every customer then no shop would ever be profitable. If you take it to a professional facility that is because you yourself cannot diagnose the issue. The facility of your choosing is paying multi thousand dollar subscriptions for parts catalogs and repair info specific to your car. Not to mention the tens of thousands of dollars required to buy the proprietary diagnostic scanner for mercedes. buying a high end luxury euro car then complaining about cost seems self inflicted to me. I hope you maintain this same energy when you have to troubleshoot something that takes more than 3 bolts and a youtube tutorial to replace.
@vasil74103 ай бұрын
@@rustyshackleford516 The mechanic had already reported and diagnosed the problem during a service, so that time had already been paid for. The quoted 1.5 hours was purely to do what I did in 30 mins with no prior experience. And I don't need a multi thousand dollar parts catalogue when I have Google. I understand that a work shop has lots of overheads but why should I pay for 1.5 hours at a high hourly rate when I can do it myself in 30 mins? Unless I am also paying for the mechanic's time to watch KZfaq videos to learn how to do it?

Your videos are super amazing and informative. While my mechanic was working on my manifold, when he detached the mass airflow sensor he noticed oil on the housing( the hose that connects the pcv and further more into the case of the airflow) and he is of the opinion my engine is wearing gradually. I would like to believe contrary to his opinion, its the pcv valve that needs replacement. Especially now that i just came across your video on that. I noticed also that on the pcv valve, presence of oil is much and so i feel strongly i need to replace it. I would appreciate your insight concerning this. Thanks a lot for helping out always. Much love

Thanks a million for the video... discovered the leak and also discovered that due to this part worn out, it had caused the intake flaps stuck and cuased serious damage to the butterfly liver which is made of plastic. The error codes I got were related to the flaps are stuck to the open position, self adaptation of mixture error codes in both banks , horrible vibrations during changing gears, rough idle, and caused the engine consume more petrol due to rich mixture. Had to get the whole manifold out just to replace the liver. Just got the new PCV, letting the engine cool off before I replace it... great video... cheers.

@@iRepairAutos job done.made a great difference.. appreciate if you can make another video to show how to readjust the fuel pressure to the theoretical limits if the mixture is too rich. Is adjusted by DAS star Diagnostic or just some valves in under the hood? Videos just show how the pressure is measured but haven't seen any on how to recalibrate. Thanks.
@kito1san4 жыл бұрын
You need to install a oil catch can. Leaks from this PVC cover is not the reason for the intake manifold tumble flaps or you throttle butterfly flap to fail. Its from the oil fume that travels from this tube. The oil seperator that is behind the PVC cover didn't do the job enough causing fumes to go down the throttle and into the intake manifold which gums it up with sticky oil. The resolution from the poster is to install a oil catch can, which he showed on another video.

Bolt size is E10, but you can you use an 8mm or 5/16 12 point wrench to remove. I used the original bolts as the replacements are regular torx, and there is not much room for the upper bolt nearest the fender.

It certainly is. On another note, I don't know whether this would be within reach of home mechanics like me, but perhaps videos on the air suspension would be good additions to the channel. Sooner or later, these Mercedes air suspensions need servicing, such as replacements of the height rods, leveling sensors, and/or the air bags/springs themselves. Just a thought.Thanks again.

You do not need to drain out the oil. Let the vehicle sit for a few hours (overnight) so that the engine and oil is cool. Most of the oil will be sitting at the bottom of the engine in the oil pan.

It's an important one. Don't overlook it. the diaphragm is designed to fit snugly around the breather port and as such wears out over time allowing oil to get into the air intake manifold which can cause failure of that part.
@absbica314 жыл бұрын
Ordered both parts....We bought a GL450 last year..and during the inspection, they noted the p0016 and the runner flap was stuck in the on position. We had a new intake manifold installed...and the inspection noted the oil separator cover needed replaced. We hadn't done it yet..but we have been smelling, sporadically, an awful burning smell when the car is on..not always but every once in a while. This video has almost confirmed this likely is the culprit...even though I've not installed the parts yet. Crossing fingers.

@shawnmanzke90325 жыл бұрын
Replaced many of them. Never seen them crack or fall apart. The seal just leaks. It is known as the oil centrifuge cover. No regular service interval required. The " diaphragm " expands due to the tight fit onto the oil centrifuge. No lock tight needed on the bolts. Don't forget to remove the plug in the cover.
@kirilllevterov46892 жыл бұрын
what about the centrifuge itself - does it need a replacement? Not an expensive part anyway.

My mercedes needs a crank case valve replacement and the mechanic is quoting it at $3,000 with 10 hours of labor at $210 per hour and $400 for parts and misc. Based on this video, it looks like I am being way overcharged.
@justicerowell9186 Жыл бұрын
The reason it's so expensive to get done at a shop is because they have to replace the entire pcv assembly not just the valve. This takes undoing one of the engine mounts, and taking off your alternator and a/c compressor, just to replace.

Is it possible to spray intake manifold cleaner through that hose off that breather valve into intake manifold to help keep intake clean or will it do damage ? Great videos thank you for the tips!!

It would help. My only concern would be if the MAF cleaner goes into the intake ports on the engine; It could cause damage if a lot is in there.

If you find that hose is oily and dirty. You have a problem already. Check poster other video where he explains this and a resolution to install a oil catch can. This is just a beginning of the issues that you are about to find out. This will lead you to the issue with the intake manifold (tumble flaps and actuator gumming up).
