Great feature. A, B, C, D & E are cities with airports. My siblings live in B, C & E in different countries. I live in D. Our elderly parents live 2 hours away from A, but no airport where they live. This feature will be great for a family trust Mercedes in a storage locker, 5 min from airport in A. All 4 siblings can access the car and separately visit folks without using car rental. Thanks a mil Nick, you just convinced me to go this route.

Good and clear video Nick! I have experimented with it myself. The only thing that is missing is that the glovebox compartment is not locked for those remote drivers. So if they really want the can still grab the key, leaving you in less control then I would like. If Mercedes where to lock the glovebox compartment during the digital key handover, it would make it a lot more secure as you are always fully in control of the key and car. Maybe a separate control for the glovebox as all of us keep our important papers there. So if the remote driver is stopped by the police, they can request to unlock the glovebox for those papers. I personally find it to insecure to ever use.

Yeah that’s a good idea! Solution for convertible owners, I’m sure I remember the front arm rest locks when you lock the car so it could maybe go in there if it still works 👍🏼 Just a thought!

Quite a niche feature. Another use case is to have a spare key hidden in the car in case you loose your keys. For example going on holidays, in case you lose your keys abroad, you can still take your car when going back home by simply reactivating it on your phone. PS: there's a hidden compartment inside the glovebox on the top - good place to hide your key 😊

Very true! My only thought process on that would be, does the car have signal? If you’re in the middle of nowhere, like a mountain range…what would happen then? 😬 Maybe if i had a 3rd key but that would be expensive to buy another

@@npoleary good point, I imagine it wouldn't work without signal for your car, since you wouldn't be able to reactivate the key in such a scenario 🥲 But It'd be safer than having some way to reactivate the key offline by pressing some buttons for example, that'd be a thief's dream! I'm just really glad we get 2 key fobs to start with 😁

You can use when you leave your car for service outside of the garage opening hours. In the morning when the mechanics have to start working on your car you let him in and activate the key.

I wonder why North America does not have this feature. It’s still mind blowing that Mercedes does not have the regular Digital Vehicle Key available on ALL its models. Brands like Genesis, BMW and even Hyundai have Digital Key and they give you a key card as well. Thanks for showing us this feature, Nick.

Hell I wonder what Mercedes USA have in their US shop. They removed navigation and a bunch of other features. Their shop is trash compared to other countries

I’ve heard there’s remote start on the Mercedes me app in the USA. Sadly not available here in the UK. Yeah Digital Key would be good! I’d love that!

@@npolearywhile the remote start is a nice feature it turns off when you unlock the vehicle. Almost defeats the purpose.

I don't have this feature on the 2024 GLC 300 in the US. I highly doubt I'd ever use it but it's still an interesting feature to have if the need ever arises.

It's a great Idea. What happens if you loose your key while you are out. It may be expensive, but you have piece of mind you can start the car and get home.

Hi Nick - great videos! I just bought a new a200 and have noticed the indicator sound is much lower than my 2021 model. Is there a way to change this volume as I can't seem to find it anywhere!? Thanks!

You make great videos Nick, very informative. I have a question for you if you are able to answer, I took a test drive of A250 2020 model hatchback an my local authorised Mercedes retailer I noticed the indicators was working but I could not hear the clicking sounds, is this something normal on A CLASS Models or can the sound be increased.

That's interesting. I have the A250e 22 model which should be essentially the same model (they've had a facelift last year like the one on the video). It does the clicking sound like any other car as you'd expect, so I imagine it's a hidden setting or maybe even something broken in their show model.

I have a U.K. ‘73 reg. CLA SB and the indicator click is very quiet - I’ve seen other similar comments elsewhere - so just one of those things I guess, not seen anyway of increasing the click volume, maybe you could get the indicator relay changed (if that’s how they still control the circuit)

There are many hidden volume settings under Dealer Mode. The 2020 A class should now have MBUX ntg6, you can access Dealer Mode by going to settings>Quick access and swipping left ~5times from there using the touchpad from central console. It could be that they changed something in there but I genuinely don't know what all the options do. Just a thought.

Hey all thanks for the comments and replies! Sadly I’ve not seen a way to increase the volume. I do review other cars and yes they are quieter but it’s not something where I can’t hear it at all. Would he good if you could increase the volume!

As an added security, I keep the spare key deactivated so that even if it's stolen it cannot open the car.

Hi Nick, I have a 2022 GLC 300 Coupe...........do we have to keep the spare key in the car? I keep mine in the house.

I personally keep mine in the house like I mentioned at the end of the video. I’m probably not going to use this feature. But if you are, check with your car insurance first, follow the steps and make sure the key is deactivated. But as I said for me, I’m going to use the old fashioned way and give people the key if they use it.

Funnily enough I used this feature last weekend, just as a test. In my car, the app prompted that the deactivated key be placed in the "Key place" in the centre console. Also, the other things that would worry me is that the car doesn't have a strong internet connected and the activation fails. Hopefully Mercedes has thought of that one!

Yes I did think of that where I was filming and I also wondered what would happen if the car was deleted off your account while a key was “deactivated”. Might have to test that one day and see what happens!

If you’re in the UK PLEASE read the fine details of your car insurance policy as having a key left in your car will most likely invalidate your insurance! (Even if it is ‘deactivated’)

Hi Nick! Say you handed over the digital key and the neighbour moves the car, he/she parks it... Turn the engine off and... How would he/she close the car? Would he/she need to call you back to turn the key off and/or close it? Or would you need to tell them where the key is and they'll have to use it nornally to do that keeping it with them? 🤔

They would call you to lock it, so you’d have to lock it via the app. I guess they could take the key out but by that point they may as well just have the key. The key has to be in the car to be deactivated or activated (if that makes sense)

Hey Nick. I have a Mercedes GLA 220D. I live in Bangalore, India and there's a lot of pollution in the city. In India we always drive using the air conditioning with the recirculation on all the time. On occasion we allow fresh air to come in by rolling down the windows but the recirculation is never off. Now with my Mercedes GLA 220d, I see that the recirculation turns off automatically and as soon as I smell something off from outside I look down and realize that the the recirculation is off, and I have to manually turn it back on. Is there any way to keep it on all the time without having to manually switch it on when it goes off? thanks

No I don’t think so I’ve seen a lot of German cars do this Mercedes stated that it’s because the air quality can deteriorate quite a bit when the air circulation is left on closed on the inside. But of course if it’s even worse outside, then I guess you’ll have to toggle it back on if you need it.

You may need to give permission to drive to more than one person who may not be able to physically pass your key around. Also these keys are very expensive so it’s a good idea to minimise risk of loss, damage or stolen.

Nick, I wonder if you have noticed what I have by any chance. As of today, 11/06/24 the Mercedes me app no longer allows me to search & set a location for navigation & send to my car. I don't have the Navigation package but have always been able to do the above. I uninstalled & reinstalled the app & no change......any ideas?

Oh I’ve just been onto my app and it seems okay? Have you spoken to anyone at Mercedes? Or maybe even Mercedes me support from the app? They might be able to check it out for you.

What happens to the main key during this process? Does it work or will it only deactivate the key inside the vehicle?

Ah no it’ll only deactivate the spare key so it’s just one key at a time 🙏

Both my 23s don’t have that service, but I wanted to learn the function. Also, in the states, MMe is only free for one year, then it’s around 150.00 USD after that. I do love having it, so will renew when up.

Ah interesting! I’ll defo renew my app but probably not the live traffic updates. I use Apple CarPlay anyway 😜

@@npoleary I'll renew, for a couple of reasons. One, I like the Mercedes system better (as I have Augmented Reality) and two, even in the cars (non-Mercedes) that don't have AR I pay for the service as a backup. Once while in another city I was just starting for home, pulled up CarPlay, and Apple's servers were missing in action. Thank goodness the car had built-in nav and I had traffic paid for on it so I was able to get out of town and back to the freeway. I consider it a cheap backup.

I guess I'm just a tad dense - not sure why I would do this. If I trust you with my car, then I shouldn't need to remotely turn off access! I guess you could use it with a valet maybe? In any case, neither of my vehicles have it.

Not at all! It’s just one of the many features Mercedes offer that people may or may not use. I think the only scenario where I would do this is if I was on holiday and my neighbour needed to use the car for or move it for some reason. I’ll keep the key in the safe for now 😅

Glad you pointed out the insurance side of thing. Do you know if the deactivated key is fully deactivated of sort of ‘soft’ deactivated? Just curious how this works with thieves cloning keys etc. You make a convincing criminal with the hood up btw 😂🙂

Haha got to play the part 😜 The “hooded criminal” has made an appearance I think three times on my channel 👀 Well it doesn’t do anything with the buttons so I presume it’s completely deactivated. It just acts like a paper weight when it’s off. So I presume so!

Playing with computers: a) what happens if you deactivate the handover while the neighbor is still moving the car with the engine still running? b) Just curios, if you have your key in your pocket and walk away from the car with the engine running, will the car shut off after you are a few hundred yards away from it? c) If by chance someone hops into your engine-on car and drives off, if you have the key in your pocket and hit the lock button, what happens?

Haha Love these! a) I did try, but when the ignition is on, the Mercedes me app functions are disabled. b) the engine would stay on but would beep continuously on the inside c) on new cars, I’ve noticed if you press lock while it’s in park it’ll turn the engine off. If it’s in drive, nothing. For older cars same also applies, nothing would happen.

@@npoleary --- Thanks, that's informative. Just a wild guess that they don't include a "kill switch" on the key because, in a pocket, it might be unintentionally pressed by some body motion while driving.

Seems like this feature would be great for car rental companies, key will deactivate automatically after rental period ends 🤔🤷‍♂️

Yeah maybe! Although not sure if the key would deactivate if it wasn’t in the car. I think the car is the thing that turns the key on and off. So the person could just keep the key. Maybe….just a thought

Hey thanks for the feedback! Sadly I have to speak at a certain speed to keep the video engaging for all. There are subtitles and playback speed options too. I don’t speak or edit as fast as some creators on KZfaq though.
