The reason the distance it operates becomes shorter over time is due to dry joints forming on the circuit board the receiver is mounted on. I have repaired lots of these. You have to remove the part of the door handle that is retained by the grub screw, take the sensor out, and reflow the three joints connected to the pins of the sensor. It is very tricky and you have to cut off part of the mounting to get it out. The whole job takes about 45 minutes in total. But once done the remote will operate the convenience opening and closing from about 15 feet away from the vehicle.

Hi there, thanks so much for the encouragement, I started the channel to help my friends and people on their cars and is seems to be going well, its rewarding ! I know that the cars we have are getting old, perhaps try this trick. Open your phone camera, then hold the key remote button facing your screen, you should pick up the infra red via the camera lens being a blue colour. If you do not see the flashing light then you may find your key remote is faulty. It will still unlock the car as it uses radio waves. I will do a quick video for you

@@GrooveOn I love the R230, I got it just over a month ago, watching people like you, work on them was inspiring and gave me the confidence. Your videos are so informative, awesome job. Thanks for the tip, I will also try the spare key. I want to try cleaning up and refitting the the rubber seal on the back windscreen, metal is rusting there which Is very common. Have you done that? Also have you had the SBC brakes serviced, apparently the finite number of actuations, on the unit, that's the only thing I dread.!

Hi There GrooveOn, Your videos have helped me a lot. I have a 2005 SL 500 R230 and the lock and unlock chirp is very arduous to listen to. I have tried everything to turn it off but no joy. Please advise how i can get rid of that annoying chirp.

There may be a switch on the side of the siren, or try accessing the menu on the dash. You can simply pull the alarm fuse, but this will also stop the alarm sounding. I did a video on accessing the alarm module to help. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNZhqq2kyKqxlp8.html

@@GrooveOn thank you so much for this I will try it out. Its a 2004 SL 500 so there is no menu on the dash for the alarm or maybe i missed it, I will try going through the dash menu again. You are very very helpful with your videos.

@@GrooveOn I just saw your video regarding the alarm, I am not as patient or dexterous as you are ... lol. I feel i will break a lot of stuff to get to the alarm. Could you point me in the right direction of the right fuse to disable the lock/unlock chirp. Pleaseeeeee....

Question for you. When i press the central lock button inside the car, only the drivers door locks. When i use the remote, all doors work fine. 2007 r230. Any ideas?

Hmm interesting, the fact that you can unlock fine with key suggests that your PSU is all good. I wonder if the car has got confused. Take your key and hold it 1 foot from the drivers door handle and press the lock and unlock buttons on the key at the same time for 10 seconds. That will allow you to open just the drivers door with one press and all doors with 2 presses. To reverse this, just do the same thing.

Thanks for answering! I re built the PSE pump and it is now fine. I will try the key trick. Fuses seem to be fine too unless I am missing something.

If your car has the datacard attached in back of the service book (depends on age of car) it is on there. Or you can download VIN info from the Google app store on your phone.

Just like you can lower/raise windows with any regular car since the invention of fobs, I like to think this also works for basically every convertible... would not call that a secret ;)

it works on some cars but not all, for example the older Range Rovers L322 the windows open, but on the newer L320 they do not. Likewise the Honda Civic mk8 2009 it does not work, yet the older and newer ones do. For the Merc SL the older 2003 models of R230 this auto roof I have been told by viewers doesn't work unfortunately.

That's a shame, have you tried cleaning the lens on remote, maybe run run a diagnostic to check that your door receiver is working correctly and it's not shorted to ground
