Mercedes SL55 AMG - fuel cost

Күн бұрынIt’s been six months since we bought this beautiful Mercedes SL 55 AMG and we have just done the first 1000 miles. The SL55 reminds me a little bit of a Ferrari that I used to own. Both cars sound great and are super fast the only problem being that they encourage you to drive like you are on a Formula One track. This is a super short video showing what it cost in fuel to drive the first thousand miles.....Bear in mind that these figures do not include the latest fuel price increase. That fuel is still sitting in the tank but it wont be there long!

Good analysis makes me laugh when I fill mine and it shows 380 miles distance till next fill up, but after 150 miles I'm back in filling her up again. Around town I get 8mpg, on the A roads around me I get 14-19 mpg, on the motorway I might get 22-25 mpg. That's with it being tuned to around 620 bhp As the old saying goes, smiles per mile 🤪😆

Thanks for your comment - scary, but I don't think any AMG owner ever said on their death bed "I wish I had spent less on fuel'... Mike

Love my SL500 but always lust after an SL55 AMG, they’re just beautiful….. however you’ve just shown me one advantage of my SL500.. fuel!! Makes mine look like a economical runabout lol 😆…. on a 200ml run back to Cornwall from Hampshire recently down the A303/A30 I averaged 30mpg at an average speed of 65mph, not bad for a 5.0L V8

Wow....I can but dream about 30mpg!! I have done a follow up on fuel consumption and on a long run from Bristol to Cornwall, and avoiding the urge to accelerate from 80 to 100mph when over taking, the fuel consumption is around 20 - 22mpg. When I get back from Australia, I plan to do a comparison of the the 500SL and the SL55 as my neighbour has the former. First I need to fix an oil leak and some rusty brake pipes! Happy Christmas. @@MikesMercsandothercars Merry Christmas to you…. Resisting the temptation to zip up to three figure speeds is the difficult part! It’s just so effortless 😆 …. I’m willing to forgive that V8 engine anything though, it’s just a fantastic beast 😃

I’m get an average of 20-22mpg(UK gallons) which is considerably better than the Land Rover V8 I sold which managed 10-14mpg.

What car do you have? SL55 or 500SL? In my SL55 I might get 20mpg on a long journey but less than 10mpg in town. The SL55 sounds so nice, its tempting to do a racing start every time! Mike

Interesting video Mike. I love the thumbnail. My SL gets way better mileage. In the past 14 years I haven’t spent any money on petroleum. 🤪

The SL55 feels and drives like a modern car and indeed most people would not guess that it’s almost 20 years old. The 107 SL is I believe one of the most drivable classics in terms of a day to day car…..but doesn’t come close to the SL55 for comfort. Mike

Yep….they do say what you don’t know can’t kill you. I don’t think my 280SL ever got much more than 17mpg. It worked out cheaper buying a flat in Clifton than a cheaper house else where and commuting. Mike

Just filled my SL55 up with BP Ultimate unleaded (E5) and paid £148…

Wow - that almost makes me feel a bit better. The Scottish streak in me has never allowed me to pick up the “premium” nozzle….Mike

Hi Mike, slightly different topic hope you can help! I’m taking my SL55 (1 owner 76k) down to Southern Spain soon and I’ve noticed how hot the wings and areas around the front struts are getting even in short trips; is this normal? Any other checks that I should make before the journey? Thanks as always… 👍

@@ash44roberts Spain?? You live the life! I'm not sure if its normal, but my car gets pretty hot in those areas too. I think if you had cooling issues you'd probably get a check coolant level warning on the dash. Unfortunately my heat sensor gave up the ghost during the scamdemic (probably over use!) otherwise I'd let you know what my car reads. Let me know if you make it to Spain. Mike

Hi Mike, just to say my SL55 made it from Santander ferry port to Almeria yesterday without incident. The main roads in Spain are excellent with very little traffic compared to the UK so I was able to make the 614 mile journey in 8hrs 20mins with 2 fuel stops. Fuel here is now virtually double the price it was 12 months ago in some places! (I paid €2.13 per litre at one stop). All the best, Ashley
