Best car I ever owned was a 123 300TD Wagon, was just breaking it in at 228,000 when it ran into the rear of a Ford pickup. Loved wrenching on it too, solid as the day it was built, tight not a rattle, 123's were great cars brings back good memories.

Good old Mercedes, they'll just keep on ticking along, as long as you keep them serviced. Should see a million miles easily.

My old 89 Taco is like that. 1st the radiator and next the heater core. Just waiting on the water pump but all is well so far. Baily is trying to corral the murder chickens to keep them from drinking that anti-freeze and getting meaner. Hope he succeeds like you did. GBWYall

I ran my Volkswagen Golf TDI to 420K miles from brand new then sold it to my nephew. It's still going with over 500K now, but he just hit a deer with it. Don't know if it will be back. I miss that car, best car I've ever owned. That car spent almost its entire life running on Jet A.

you do some of your best work in the dark... lol... helped a woman with her car one day, nice looking too, I was having a problem finding the hole, she said, bet you wouldn't have a problem if it were dark... I was 20 maybe back in 77... I nearly fell over how quickly she had that comeback.

I recall a coworker of my Dad's having an old diesel Mercedes that had a half-million miles on it back in the late 60s. Not sure of the year, it was originally sold in Argentina and made it's way here with the owner. Apparently, stubborn German engineers did not listen when instructed about planned obsolescence.

Here in California, I frequently just omit the thermostat. Typically there are only about a dozen days in the "dead of winter" when I have regrets. Certainly wasn't an option when I lived any place with a hard freeze.

The hood can go vertical if you pull the second tab at 45 degrees, no head bumps.

Brian: Good simple machines are not made anymore. Almost everything today is designed on a price point basis. They do not want it to last for too long. Planned obsolesce in my opinion. I know you used to work for Limestone. Did they not sell to Meade a few years ago??? I can not remember if you said what you did there??? I worked for two different JD dealerships over a 30 year period. Started out as a tech and then moved up to service manager. Then up to store manager when the owners health failed. JD closed that store in 1998. I then finished my run at another JD dealership starting as a salesman and then finished as sales manager. I retired in 2005 and I am glad I did. The JD company of today is not the one I used to work for. I would not be very happy there today. This was all in Iowa.

I run a Mercedes W205 (not an oil burner) it's covered around 25,000 miles so far, I like Mercs but I cant see this one doing 400,000, not with me driving it anyway. I'm 76 now and I'd have to live to about 140 with the mileage I do. lol.

So after hrs got no inspection from from the boss? Surprised did not replace the hoses as well. Not like ya to do a complete job! See ya in the next one. Oh update on Hyster?

Working in the dark ain't so bad but the temperature drops too much after dark. Reminds me though of changing the clutch on my first Jaguar back in the early 70's in the middle of winter out in the open. Never again! 😨

"Only" 400,000 miles, nice. Haha. Amazing how far maintenance will take you. Sadly I know people who trade off before they hit 40,000. Then they wonder why they're broke.

Too bad Brian does not have a semi-heated shop to work in so he can avoid working outside in the dark. On the other hand, spilled coolant is not an issue. :-)

Wonder if making. the hose to the reservoir a little longer would take some stress off of the plastic nipple on the radiator.

If I was you Brian I would pen a very stern email to Mercedes straight away, I mean after all they claim that their cars are built to last and at 400,000 miles sure your only half way there, I had a model the same as yours just an estate that came into me to be detailed in 1987 with 250,000 miles on it and all it needed was a new drivers carpet insert and a drivers seat base so fast forward to 1995 and in another detail shop in Dublin that I ran one day what pulls up only the same sky blue Merc estate with the same owner and we got chatting and this time it had 540,000 miles and going strong he drove all over Europe for business.

Brian, one thing fer sure, you aint gotta worry too much about anything rusting under that hood...lol

"metric wrenches and sockets" -- Metric? How long has the U.S. been using that fancy Metric system? Does anyone remember when the U.S. adopted the Metric Convention? Yup, the President signed the formal international treaty a long time ago. Which President? Of Course, President Grant! He signed the Convention du Mètre in 1876. So my precious 9/16ths wrenches are really based on the Metric system. All of the U.S. customary units have been defined in terms of metric units since the 19th century, we just chose not to tell anyone. .
