These models are rare by now, although being one of the most produced models by Mercedes.
Either they are a mess but still running or they are in mint condition and fetch premium prices. The good used unit seems to be gone from the market these days.
I compiled this short video to show the weak spots of this model and what to expect cost wise if things do go south...
And a strong word of caution for buyers who are blinded more often than not by a shiny paint job.

Thanks from me too! I really want one of these and there are so many videos talking about how they are bulletproof. But you have made it clear that they are old cars, and as I know, with all old cars, there will be much work required. I still believe they are some of the best cars ever made and I want one but now I will expect to spend a lot of money . . . unless I am lucky enough to find one that's already been done

Hi, they are pretty bulletproof. Remember that these "lemons" i show here who knows how many miles they clocked. If you compare a opel or a VW from that era they are not even comparable IMHO quality wise, let alone evolution wise. There is no cheap way of owning a good example. Either you can do everything yourself and can buy a cheaper car or you bite the bullet and buy a low mileage /everything done car. Especially sought after models like the Turbodiesel or the 280's fetch absurd prices.

Thank you for your kind words. I would say 80% of classic car buyers dont have a clue what awaits them. They let themselves be blinded by the shiny chrome. When they realize what they've bought they've invested so much money and time that it truly hurts.

Always loved those vans and they are very rare here in Portugal. Never thought to see one of these in that bad coondition. By the way, I apreciate your workshop´s partner choice. Serra da Estrela are amazing dogs in fact.

Thank you very much Sir for this videos! I was thinking in buying a w123 SW (very overpriced down here too!). The question I have is: a vehicle in this condition I guess will not pass an MOT, right? I ask that, because I din´t saw the vehicle yet (is located 600 km away home), but that SW has the MOT up to date. Is a 300D, with 400K on the clock... I din´t know about the presurised self-leveling system...I don´t know, I´m dubiest... Thank you very much again! greetings from Argentina! FS Acker

hello to Argentina!! that's definitely a country I would like to visit especially after Milei won the election! Anyway regarding the W123 be very careful what you buy. if you don't understand the tech, no experience in "seeing" rusty bodywork etc take someone with you who does. Pay him if you have to. Buying something rotten will not bring you joy!

What is the part number for the main vacuum line going into the brake booster? I can’t find the Euro version with the single vacuum nipple.

The most expensive Mercedes is a cheap one. Just because the model is a classic one that doesn’t mean it was maintained. I like the W123 300 CD but I would not pay more than 3k for one. If you want an older car in great shape you’re better off to buy one restored. People like the idea of restoring a car but when they start it, and they pay someone else to do it, and realize how expensive it gets they’ll abandon the project

Some wise words right there. And most people really understimate the work of restoring a car. You can do everything in "Mum's" garage but it will take you 2/3 years. Restoring a W123 10 years ago was realtively cheap, now its a bank breaker, same with the W124

We refer to the these types of people who this shitty kind of work as hacks. I recently replaced a roof and I was astonished at how awful the workmanship was, but not just that, the materials used were horrible, I couldn’t imagine how any company could sell such garbage. I’m referring to the wood structure under the roofing material. Sorry for wandering off topic. There are so few people who care about doing excellent workmanship. I’m a retired mechanic from Boeing. Best regards.

I subscribe to your comment a 100% . problem is people who only work for money lack the love. In my case I love keeping artwork alive. If you're in this only for money and don't care it shows right away. And unfortunately old cars are prone for "hacks" as the owners normally are loaded and don't understand a job well done or just look nice. Shouldn't be this way but that's exactly how it goes
