Let me just say I'm impressed by your humbleness at such a yong age. IN HUMBLENESS WE ARE OPEN TO LEARN. This is the most important lesson id hope everyone you addressed with this understands that. Humbleness isn't a lack of boldness or a weakness but a key that opens doors. Im a solo American trucker, now for 40 plus years. Being in control of such things requires us to be on point at all times. I'm glad to see so many young, regardless nationalities, are also on point. Good job and carry on. Be blessed young man, you certainly are. 🇺🇲🙏🇺🇲

If someone, whether they have just finished school or training, still lacks experience on the job. For this, the captain or the other officers are there to support you with their experience. As you said, call the captain or the other officers when you have a problem. They will solve it with you, and you will never forget what you learn from it. Anyway, it's a mystery to me that in Malacca Street and Taiwan Street, with so many fishing boats, there are not too many disasters. Or else it is not made public. Another great video with your experiences as a young officer. And that's what you're doing now, passing on your experiences to the young cadets. Bravo.👏🙌💙🙏

Something I learned when becoming an accountant after many many exams, you never really truly forget all you have learned even though it may feel like you have. It is in the back of your mind. A very emotional video Karan. The problem is these days , both Deck as well as Engine cadets take a lot of time for clearing exams , add to that the shortened sea time , between exams and cadetship , merely compounds the problem. Nevertheless , remember that as you go up in rank, the experiences and expectations are always keep increasing. As a Master , would always have an overriding authority, but if you're on con , will that lower your responsibility ? Not at all . Listen to not only seniors , but also the ratings. You'll be surprised to know how much an experienced Bosun or AB can teach you. You were surely lucky to get an understanding Master , and the fact you actually got a sailing handover. That rarely happens, these days , and more so for a junior officer. Both, attitude and aptitude are necessary in this field along with discipline - as the skill can be learnt for almost all things . But critical operations , require supervision and clear communication to avoid collisions. Its always good to have hard task boss initially, as it gets your skills honed and improved much faster. On the vessel , collision is almost the first thing and priority of not only the navigating officers but also the engineers. COLREGS will evolve , and maritime traffic will never reduce. I truly hope that youll pass on your experiences and trainings to your juniors in person as well , and be a good leader when you do get the 4 stripes.

I am not a mariner or even remotely connected with the merchant navy profession but I found your video absolutely fascinating! I am retired and I have to say (without meaning to sound condescending), that as a relatively young man, you are wise, humble and most of all very self-aware to be able to impart such a great account of your experience and more importantly, lessons to others who are thinking of embarking on a similar career. Keep doing what you are doing and I hope one day, I will be lucky enough to comment on your posting as a newly minted Captain of the largest merchant ship sailing through the Taiwan strait!

This experience just shows you that, education, and testing is important, but is only a foundation for your ship board duties, but sailing experiences can not replace common sense and situation learning. That is where you learn and using that experience makes you valuable asset to your ship, crew, and company. It also shows that compliances and not being aware of the different situations can get you in trouble 😊😊😊 just think back from the time you did this sailing to now how much you’ve learned.
