I loved the explanation for why he made it; he just made it to make it. It's sort of like when they asked a famous mountain climber (his name escapes me) why he climbed mountains and he said something like "because they're there".

I did. He said cooling down the bell IN THE CAST was a dismal failure because the cast fractured. I didn't say cast the bell with LN2, I said COOL the bell with it. The freezer he was storing the bell is -70°C, and that might not be cold enough to harden the bell enough to ring. Just like a lead bell sounds dull at room temp., but rings when cooled. LN2 is 126 degrees colder than his freezer. If it still won't ring he could ask the Professor for some of his liquid helium at −268.9 °C.

Why not start with the mold and the mercury at room temperature, and then cool them both, at the same time, in the dry ice and acetone? This way, the mercury would flow easily into the mold, rather than freezing as it is poured in.

Yes. It is vapour, but at the right temperature it is a solid. Mercury is often found in thermometers, but for example on antarctica, they have to use alchohol because the mercury would freeze. So you see, everything or at least most of the things on the periodic table, can be an gas, a liquid or solid. I hope this answer your question because i'm not so good at this ^^

It lacks the metallic lustre / may be in this video, how about its bonding, whether crysatalline, it seems amorphous.may become sonorous upon slow coolingin which case it may have metallic bond, and a thinner bell may do.

I think you can float in mercury, but I wouldn't like to think of the health consequences. Interesting if they had tried a metal clapper on the bell, either on the inside or outside. What are the mechanics of a bell, is it strictly the shape of the bell and the characteristic of the metal or does a metal clapper or striker play a critical part in producing the sound correctly?

He did it just to see if he could. Whether or not he produced something of immediate utility is irrelevant. This kind of basic curiosity is a cornerstone of scientific inquiry, and should always be encouraged. But at the very least, he's increasing interest in chemistry by featuring it in this video.

I can't help but imagine a science fiction story in which two aliens from a much colder planet discuss Earth. "Did you know that on Earth the temperatures are hot enough to melt mercury?" I don't know if temperatures at which mercury is solid allow for any chemistry that could give rise to life, but it's an amusing thought. I do know that helium gets quite interesting close to absolute zero.

If you heat anything up to a certain temperature, it becomes a gass. Mercury's meltingpoint is -38C and the boilingpoint is 356,7C Since pure Mercury is a liquid in house temperature it can be changed to vapor. So if you're confused about the liquid thing, thing of iron and ice. Ice is a solid form for water and melts at 0C. Iron is just the same, only that it has a higher meltingpoint at 1500C give or take.

well in order to make sounds from metals, they need to be able to vibrate. I'm assuming the mercury is far too dense to be able to resonate sound. imagine tapping on a bell made out of clay. a proper handbell made out of bronze and copper alloys weighs very little for the same size as this mercury bell. so again I'm assuming the mercury is far too dense. Do sound waves travel through mercury even at its normal state(not frozen)? curious...

It is quite common in metallurgy to break molds after the casting. In fact, you can get a special clay powder that can be pressed stiff easily and then dug out easily as well. As for your cooling process, I wonder why you didn't put it into that strong fridge? Heat transfer would be slow enough through the air.

@punishedexistence

The bell is too thick to ring and too soft, it just absorbs the impact without resonance. Still, the idea is outstandingly cool. And, I not only want that -70 degree freezer, I *MUST* have it, haha!

Most metals become harder and thus more likely to ring as they get colder. I know the mold couldn't deal with the stress of flash-freezing in liquid Nitrogen, but I wonder if he's tried hypercooling the bell itself. That extra 100+ degrees might make all the difference.
