I've owned a 1967 Cougar since I was 16...still have the same car - now I'm 67! 289 4 bbl, C4 automatic, a long time ago, I added Sears coil shocks to rear - to alleviate the sagging rear end look many early Cougars have. Also added a real Mustang Boss 302 rear stabilizer bar, and the Gabriel Strider shocks set to Xtra Firm up front. I still love this car, and it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it...!

I also have a 67 Cougar, 289 2bbl, 3spd on floor. Same color as in this video. All original 47k miles. The original owner had dual exhaust with glasspacks installed back in 67, which it still has. Also has the same problem with the sagging leaf springs in the rear. I just put air shocks on it for now. Will eventually see about getting the rear springs resprung.

The '67 Cougar is the most beautiful piece of American muscle design ever. I had to give mine up in the 90's. I was the second owner. Literally bought it from a little old lady in California. She had the owner's manual and the little tag that hung from the rear view stating that the interior was, indeed, genuine leather. I cry now.

I bought one very recently with a 289 3 speed, and it needing work is an understatement. The floor pan was rusted out, missing a bunch of interior parts and overall bad condition; but I’m 17 and wanted a different car thank my ‘96 mercury sable( which I love). I plan on making it my daily driver so I don’t plan on keeping it factory original. With my knowledge of cars and my dedication to work on my new project car, I’m going to spend a lot of money, time, love and enjoyment with it!

👍 When I was but a lad in the mid 70s, he took me with him in search for the perfect used Cougar. He bought three of them, one with an incredible 351 Cleveland engine and two others for various parts. He ended up with a (converted) Cougar XR-7 with perfect black-leather interior and the full XR-7 dash, map lights, etc. He also had front to rear stabilizers installed. That car was a running-BEAST!!

Of course I always enjoy a video that talks about the Mercury Cougars from the '60's. Cougars share many of the same issues that you would have with a Mustang, rusting in the same areas. Vinyl tops present a problem as most cars were not painted under the tops and rust ate away sight unseen. Finding body parts, while not anywhere near as easy as the Mustang it is still possible and actually easier than it was before the internet days. Electronics can be a nightmare if they have been fooled with over the years, they require much patience to get working correctly but some nice solid state replacements have been created over the years for relays and turn signal motors.

My buddy had a '70 Cougar he inherited in 1980 when he got his driver's license at 16, a few months before I did. So many great memories cruising around in that car. Thought the flip-up headlamp covers were the coolest thing. He had one cassette tape always playing in the car. To this day, every time I hear a song from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Damn the Torpedoes' album, I am transported back to cruising in that red 1970 Cougar.

I read somewhere years ago that Ford put a lot more insulation and with the longer wheelbase you will also get a better ride in the cougar from those days. The article I read also said that Ford was trying to make the cougar in a European style design so it was more of a luxury Mustang so To speak

My first car was a 67 Cougar bought used about a year old. It was bought in Chicago and I had the "Ziebart" rust proofing done to it. The "push button" windshield pump he talks about is more like a pedal than a button. You are actually doing the pumping with your left foot. Pretty neat, actually. Mine was a 289. My older brother happened to have a supercharged Studebaker Avanti with the Studebaker 289 and, of course, it was more powerful. But mine seemed very weak compared to it. After driving it cross country to California, I found out that the spark plug wires were hooked up in the wrong order on one bank. The engine was seemingly running normally, but with the firing at the wrong points was developing full power. It made quite a nice improvement to get those cylinders firing properly. Then I bought a 1969 one new (green) and, unfortunately, it got wrecked and totaled. This was replaced with another new 1969 (blue). I think the 67/68 and 69/70 styles are more timeless than most other designs of the time, and certainly better than when Cougars later got fat and pug like.

They don't make them like that anymore. I have had conversations with my kids over the years, and have made the comment, listen carefully when you shut the door of today's cars versus yesterday's the sound today is cheaply made compared to the solid sound it makes of old cars. Solid well built and made to last, yeah they surely don't make them like that anymore. Thanks for sharing these beautiful machines and allowing me to remember and reflect on the good old days.

Bought a '67 XR-7 back in 1979 while in college. It was a beautiful brown with a white vinyl covering the roof. 289 2bbl with 200 hp. Brown leather throughout; wood trim on the dash; all the gauges. The engine wasn't properly maintained before I bought it & and it soon developed fatal problems. By the time we got done fixing it, we could have put a brand new 302 in it for the same money. Once the engine was running well, it was a nice riding car. Eventually, rust doomed the body and it was sold for scrap.

The one unique feature not mentioned is the rear signal lights. There are 3 bulbs on each side that flash in a staggered 1,2,3 to indicate which way you are turning. it used an mechanical/electrical mechanism in the trunk to accomplish this. You should have shown the XR7 model which has a far more impressive interior. The '68 XR7 kept that '67 XR7 interior virtually in tact. I own a 1968 XR7 and am stopped by someone who wants to photograph or talk about it every time I drive it which is weekly. I had a '67 with a 289cu 4bbl, the 1968 has a 302cu 2bbl. Either has way more than sufficient muscle. With a 390, the car is a virtual bullet. Vintage tv commercials from 1967 and 1968 on KZfaq ie the one with Arnold Palmer feature that classic XR7 interior.

The one thing few ever talk about is the uni-body and the terrible front end setup. They came with upper control arms with the springs on the top. They "A' frame cross bar had plugs rather than zerks for greasing and the quickest way to get a zerk in was to cut a hole in the spring tower. This happened only a small % of the time and most front ends wore out amazingly quick. They also had a strut bar for the lower control arm that was set in rubber biscuits, they wore out and deteriorated. To further add to the misery the power steering had a valve in drag link with hoses dangling under the car, vulnerable to road hazards.Absolutely one of the worst front ends ever engineered on a car.For Ford engineering was an Oxymoron. It was however a cash cow for parts suppliers and mechanics for decades.

Hey guys needed some help. I wanted to purchase a 68 cougar as a flip project. I have the opportunity to get one for 2,200. There’s an engine(302) and tranny in it that he believes is original but the engine is seized. None of the accessories are on the engine but he has them still. He recently replaced the floor pan and rhino lined the bottom of the car. The trunk will need a new pan welded in. And the paint is pretty bad probably like a 2/10. Interior is all there probably like a 6/10 Is there any money to really be made in this one even if I had to drop a rebuilt motor in it. (I understand there’s probably a lot more info needed) Any help is very much appreciated.

Tough to tell from paint samples, it's either Lime Frost or Sea Foam Green. Mustangs used the same colors but were named different. Example: My 67 Cougar is Glacier Blue and the identical color for the Mustang is Brittany Blue.

My first car was a 68 xr7 w/390. Should have kept it. This video fails to mention the sequential turn signals that were one of the best parts of these cars.
