MERCURY MARINE LAYS OFF 300 WORKERS! (NOT GOOD!!!)
The news has broke and we've all seen it. Mercury lays off 300 workers! Business can be tough sometimes and desperate measures are being taken. Mercury is feeling the wrath of overproduction and the chicken's are coming home to roost! Call it bad financial planning , corporate greed or just a poor economic outlook...or all 3, but no doubt this is bad for the entire industry. Comment below if you've been impacted by this layoff. We would LOVE to chat with you on it. Also, comment below and let us know why you think Mercury is doing this.

I’ve have 32+ years in the RV industry, both on the factory/wholesale side and retail side. Both industries use Stat Survey’s for their market reports, these show market share, prices paid, size of unit purchased, month over month, year over year, etc. stats. RV’s like boats are an important economic indicator for the health of consumer discretionary spending. They have been indicators for decades and will continue to be. RV factories are reducing production rates, laying off employees, cutting back in other areas, finding cheaper vendors, same as boat factories. There are so many other implications of this and what it means, so to say it’s just high cost and interest rates is only partially accurate. Andy is 100% correct in that it’s a good thing, these employees were hired during the boom a few years ago and now attrition plays its part…survival of the fittest. It’s this type of action that will cause the factories, boat, boat motor, rv’s to realize their greed over the past few years is coming back to bite them in their butt’s and we, as consumers will benefit with eventual lower prices. However, it won’t be a sharp decline, they’ll decontent, take features away, to get to the desired price points. Also, keep in mind many of the pandemic purchases of boats and rv’s were people wanting to buy, but it pushed their timeline up so now they’re off the market when they initially had planned to be in the market. Additionally, interest and price does play a part, but payment buyers are just that, they get their desired payment and they will buy, high price doesn’t play as large a roll. As for blame it is purely and singularly manufacture greed… no different than most any other industry but since it’s tangible, and if we’re watching this we have an invested interest, we notice it more…The only way to combat it, is by what human nature tells us to do-vote with our wallets. On a last note, these industries are cyclical, been this way for decades, so prices will correct, but won’t happen overnight like we want it too.

The sales guy at the supply house has been in the business over 30yrs and he said last year was the worst year hes ever seen and this year is looking like it gonna beat it. For the record a new residential hvac system is costing you about 40% more than it did just 2 or 3 years ago. Same goes for plumbing, electrical, and roofing.

I put in a 3 ton unit a couple weeks ago right next to a older 5 ton unit and the 3 ton was bigger lol. Nothing but a money grab. Ive been telling people they're prob better off putting in window units if they don't have the money. This isn’t solely manufacturer greed. They sell for what the free market will bare. Every industry does this. The last 2 administrations spent 16 million dollars and now we have to deal with the inflation. To quell inflation the FED has raised rates. This has also slowed the purchase of toys like boats. Wages need to catch up and manufacturers need to find the price point that will move product. This slowdown needed to happen. I can’t wait for quality boats for the regular guy in the 20-40k range. And when we discovered there were two types of bottom ends , a big foot for the tourist operator and a cheaper breakable one for the recreational boater , we left for good. Planned obsolescence which benefits only the dealer over the winter. We now use Honda engines exclusively and they have never failed us! Going on 15 + years now. Yamaha is good also. It wouldn't be significantly lower though. The fiberglass part of a boat is the cheap part. Seats, pumps, switches ect are all on both models and cost the same. Couple that with the reduced capability, poor ride and lack of storage, many wouldn't be interested on one. Those that would be are probably already in a tin rig which these days is virtually the same thing. I've been in my 17 glass rig for 25 years now so its a situation I'm very familiar with. Life has gotten in the way of upgrading it, no way would I ever want another like it

Andy you do a great job telling people the real story about shit. A lot of companies hired people that had no idea what the hell they are doing and don't care to do it right. I am retired an see the people that replace me they don't know what a wrench is with the phone they can't do shit. Great job Andy keep it up love your stuff.

It’s happened in my area already. My banks loan officer told me at the height of COVID, she had written more RV and boat loans in that year than she had in the previous five. It showed at campgrounds and lakes around here, and on Erie. I’m now seeing RV’s and boats for sale that are a few years old. The peak is over. I don’t feel it’s a bad thing either.

Andy mentioned it a few times, "you are just gonna have to get used to waiting". Problem is IMHO that younger anglers have had instant information, entertainment and communication for so long, the idea that they have to wait to get something.... might cause a meltdown. Same goes for people with indispensable incomes, they just don't want to wait. "Oh i cant get this now, okay frack you!!! Ill go somewhere else then that knows how to treat a customer."

Outboard went from $14k to $25k of course they are going to lay people off . The price of these things went insane when quality dropped . New 250 lower unit is $10k . They are high ! I have had 6 mercury outboards there won’t be a 7th .

Quality does need to get better. And likely will with the slow down. But totally disagree on scaling back dealer inventory. Maybe just a little. You need a reasonable amount of inventory for that impulse buy. I also personally would never order. I buy what I see... Seen too many people order campers, boats and snowmobiles wait the 3-6 months. Just to show up for delivery and find what they ordered isn't exactly what they wanted. Not to mention knowing someone who wait for a boat just to show up for delivery and find the gel coat was horrible. Do you really want to wait for another 3-6 months. I would be pissed. 🤬🤬👀👀.. Love this channel

What goes up..........must come down. The average working man can't just go stroke a check for 120K for a bass boat........nutz. I think this is why there are more aluminum boat options, and the glass rigs are offering better "package" pricing. I hear Phoenix is making the 721 ZXL model with a wider front deck, 2 - 12" graphs, trolling motor, and power poles for around $76K, dealer prep not included. That is a great deal.

I d like to find out what happened to Triton boats. Went by the factory (Hwy 5, Midway, Ak.) and the doors were closed. Bass Cat is still there right behind where Triton was, Ranger is still on Hwy 178, in Flippin, Vexus also still in Flippin, but no Triton. Did they really close the doors or did they move? I live in Lakeview, Ar. in the middle of all these boat factories.

Yep. The old days of privately owned companies that would sacrifice a little profit to make sure they produced a quality product or to keep their employees working are over. We live in a world ran buy Corporate entities. And those entities were given the same rights has individual people when they passed the "citizens united" bs back in 2011.

My 1984 Tracker and the worn out 2000 Mercury 25 hp are still catching fish. Sure, we priced a new Tracker with the slick paint and new carpet at Bass Pro and it's just not worth it. A new payment for 15 years when what we have works isn't smart at this point. I just spent way over $1000 on just restocking lures and terminal tackle. What is going on, Joe?

Deep sea fishing is slowly dying. I remember seeing bus after bus going to fish up north(cape cod). Now it’s five guys and van. These boats are still overpriced even at 80k and industry understands that. Everyone is trying to get rich, slip fees, electronics, engine services, hull maintenance for manufacturing defects, fuel, paint, accessories

mercury profited over 233 mil so far this year vs 263mil last year this same time frame. They are building a 20k (there cost) engine and selling it for 60k or even 40k..its greed or its them just trying to get every dime they can while they can because the market will settle it out in the long run

I don't know, because yes we want the core workers but how will that change the poor quality parts and bad designs ?A lot of company's are cutting workers and still making crap engines in the auto industry good example. It will surely help having core people building with quality control i just hope they listen to them and the consumer to change what thing are breaking and what isn't working. We want reliable , bottom line. Also you cant already get engines and parts in the auto indusry i hope that dosnt get like that with mercury.
