Nick Petersen the Performance Propeller Manager at Mercury Racing talks props with us. We review the differences between props like the Fury, Tempest and Bravo's. We discuss how to find the best prop for different styles of bass and walleye boats, blade thickness and horsepower ratings, how to figure out motor height, the prop with the most bow lift for bass boats and a bunch of other topics. This is the first in 3 parts of our discussion with Nick.

@@KenSmithFishing no, the email exchange we had. The Z520L is still loving the tempest. 👍🏻 can’t wait to hear about how the lynx runs. May need to look at one down the road. Great series, learning a lot. Have to try the jack plate “sweet spot” method he described.

Ken, you’re doing an excellent job asking the right ppl the right questions. You should do a detailed video setting up your new boat. Prop/jack plate/distance to pad etc etc. It would be interesting to see how different props perform on your specific hull.

I am close to Fond du Lac and will volunteer my Bass Cat Cougar FTD w/ Merc 250 ProXS to demonstrate with the assistance of Nick or his team on how different props effect the boat and it's performance. I will load the boat as they want it or I can empty it and they can weight it down themselves.

C'mon man! It was getting good, then it was over. 😆 In that scenario where speed increased when the motor was raised even though slip went up: the factor not recognized is drag. Drag in air is preferred over drag in water. Any change that reduces wetted surface area (hull or lower unit) has the potential to offer an increase in speed even though thrust efficiency may have worsened slightly. This is the same phenomenon as an aircraft going faster at a higher altitude even though the engine is making less horsepower and the prop's "bite" into thin air is lower. The gains from reduced drag outweigh the loss in effective thrust, so the plane goes faster even though delivered thrust decreased. The same applies to boats, just with a different "fluid".

The X7 alloy takes extreme heat to bend, smokes a lot and heats a small radius when trying to manipulate in prop shops. It is definitely a different type component. FYI.. Personally what I do and do not advised because of the risk. All use full tilt to get up, WOT raise JP till water pressure drops or RPM runs up, speed drops, touch lower trim to decrease angle if needed , watch speed, bring motor down to watch MPH. Adjust accordingly. This is on the edge. Boat can loose prop and hook. No need in tourney start/take off until some what clear. Not recommended for long runs on heavy bass boats with Merc Sportsmaster case. Gear case may over heat ( hurt seal) if use on long runs. ( so I m told I don't do anymore). I have sheard 4 counter -spun Merc Sportsmaster shafts , before the new larger design running heavy loads all out. Like he said in video . I prefer 4 blades, I go up 2" in pitch to off set slip and it carries the boast very nicely. Just my personal contribution of my own experience over the years. The Yamaha blade at that time was verified to me personally with the writer of Bass and Walleye Magazine in a conversation at the Bassmasters Classic of New Orleans. Technology has since improved.

I currently have a 2002 Procraft 200 Super Pro with a Mercury Racing Pro XS 200 and 25P Tempest prop. I would like a better holeshot and am considering a 4 blade such as a trophy plus. What are your thoughts on a new prop?
@l8tapex
@l8tapex 3 жыл бұрын
@@AHAUGHT is your boat set up for max performance? Jack plate? Do you carry 24volt troll with 2 batteries and 1 starter Or 3 batteries with 1 starter?Do you load it up with tournament load, passenger and with fuel? The 25 P Trophy ? Have you tried different bleed holes for hole shot? Trophy was a good standard prop, carried pretty good.Maybe too much for a 200 and full weight. That hull design is not the same as the one I mentioned. That 2002 year and later were more like todays Legends.The 1994-1996 ProCraft Super Pro was a Bullet pad/Allison V/Rocket air sponson design. ex: img.scgpix.com/listimg/img1_0416/13/img_5SnOwrsu6N.jpg, images1.showmethead.com/nlarge/6_000_1994_super_pro_200_procraft_23110888.jpg You will have to try props,, Sorry I never ran your hull. When you hit the rev limiter you prop up so RPM will stay 200 rpm "below" redline @ WOT. Summer is slower you will use less prop and winter you will need more pitch. You may see videos of your boat on youtube.You have a very desirable 2.5 Merc for Allison guys . It has no low end torque to speak of.It has better than 200 HP though.God luck.
