Thrasios, Triton Hero & Ravos, Soultender is my preferred non-budget alternative.WOTC just released Merfolk VS Goblins and made some merfolk really affordable. Ixalan also has a ton of sweet merfolk and the next set promises to add even more.

This is great! When I started planning out my Merfolk commander deck a month or so ago, I immediately thought Derevi. Then, the day I got the merfolk v goblin duel deck, was also the day this video came out! I should have commented that day I suppose, but I was too excited to see someone else following my thought process! Great video as always Jumbo! :D

Man you really know how to get me hyped for decks. Keep up the great work, just built a Neheb deck based on yours with a few fun additions, when I saw a Stuffy doll deck I needed to make it happen.

I love all these Merfolk lists that have been coming lately. My wife and I just put together an Inalla Merfolk Wizard deck that absolutely gets it done with a ton of fishy shenanigans! Can't wait for Rivals!

another great deck tech. Personally i think merfolk are underrated as tribal edh simply for their colors. Simic alone has some of the most powerful edh cards to chose from. IMO the strength of the deck goes way beyond just the merfolk creatures.

I really hope so ... but I don't think so. WOTC will want to push G/U since that will play well in standard/limited/kitchen tables/etc.

There is an underplayed budget alternative to Ghostway, Teferi's Protection, and Heroic Intervention that works really well for protecting creatures in an aggro deck - Teferi's Veil. Any of your creatures that attack become immune to all sorcery speed removal. I run it in Edric, and players bemoan the fact that it makes board wipes work in my favor (I'd be the only one left with a board). And it only costs 32 cents.

Eerie Interlude is another great budget option.

Very true. I run it in some of my decks, and I like that it doesn't force you to blink tokens to their deaths (although you are usually blinking things because they would otherwise die, so the tokens may be toast anyway). One thing that Teferi's Veil has going for it over any of the others mentioned, though, is that it is repeatable - turn after turn as long as no one blows it up. All of the others are one-shot instants.

Chulane, anyone? I know he's new, however it's a must swap for commander. Ramp and card draw with bouncing all of your ETB fishies! It's a monster. This is an amazing video though, and I love the synergy and the upgrading facet of it! Pretty please revisit the Merfolk in April?

Clicked on this video just to see if it's still budget. Its $138 now but if you take out 15 cards its $36. Itd be cool to see a revisit pn budget merfolk since theres alot of new cards that help out the tribe now.

with the new set out, this deck needs updating, there are more lords to consider. like Merfolk mistbinder and master of the waves.

Also: Eerie Interlude (wrath protection - budget) and Tishana (card draw, merfolk - budget) would be good includes.

I hope you can also just make a +1/+1 Counter B/G Merfolk Deck, with Tishana as commander, when Rivals of Ixalan comes out. Would be really sweet. Tishana doesn't even need to really synergies with the deck, as it can act as card draw and a late game finisher with islandwalk.

This is what I've been running for a month now and I love it! Merfolk with green, blue, white is all about attacking and tapping... so why not find you a girl that does both? Great video man. Really enjoyed it (opinion may or may not be biased). Caveats: - People see Derevi and think you're running a control lockdown deck (think Winter Orb)... which aren't fun at all. I've never been a huge "must win every game" kind of guy. If you want to play this casually, stay away from lockdown. If you want to go competitive, start spending the money and prepare for the hate. - Derevi is banned in French 1v1 Commander (but I mean, so is Sol Ring so who cares?). However, because of this, some people will refuse to play you in 1v1.

Glad you can confirm the awesomeness of this style of deck. I've made monoblue merfolk before and it's fine. I think this strategy uses so many more interesting cards. I totally agree with Derevi. She can be a really powerful commander. You will have to begin politicking from the very beginning.

And think about your friends before putting in Deadeye Navigator in... he's a broken card with any deck, but especially in this style of decks. Some groups I've played with flat our ban him.

More specifically with new cards from Rivals. Kumena as the commander. Using opposition and earthcraft, etc. I think it might be competitive finally to tap down the opponents board and have unblockable creatures. It would be cool to see a follow up from you given the new merfolk cards coming out.

I was contemplating a Zur the Enchanter merfolk tribal deck where Zur's only job is to fetch Deeproot Waters. Oooh maybe even grab Copy Enchantment so everytime I cast a merfolk I get 2 tokens. Or maybe at some point in the game I can fetch Arcane Adaptation, turning all of my non-merfolk lords into merfolk spells >:3

Merry Christmas!!! Luv your stuff. Everybody is playing vampires in my meta. I have wizards and dragons :) But, i got a bunch of the tribal anthem stuff before the commander sets came out. Thinking vamps..... Dragons are ramp based five color cast stuff for free or cheap and smash face. Works really well. Wizards are etb, blink stuff, control, wheel affects make everybody pay for what they think they get to cast...... Also, works really well. So... I got all these tribal cards I'm not using... WAS...... thinking elves.....But, may have to try your 4 color merfolk idea... Because I got all the partner commanders sitting and doing natta. Also I like headaches. Was trying to avoid more than duel colors for awhile. This next one is all your fault.....

Alot of good removal and sweapers in black. Never mind W/B (Vindicate)...... Not that white doesn't fill this roll well enough. Also, I believe there are enough budget(enough for running 4 colors) 5 color lands you can run. Also, you would run 4 vivid lands and run some extra swamps(or lands with swamp sub type) to run the 3 tainted lands. AND..... Terimiophic, Evolving, Warped,Terminal colorless fetches..... Maybe call the base deck budget+ or semibudget.... Also, Phelddagrif is the true Bant commander of this deck :P

Maybe at some point they'll print a bant merfolk commander in some Modern Masters type set or something, perhaps they'll make one in a commander product that doesn't care about merfolk but cares about tapping and untapping which would serve as a really good merfolk general. Of course there's always Morophon, you can just choose not to play red and black (or throw in some black as DJ suggests here with the partners) but he's not very exciting, and for such a prolific and supported tribe there should be a proper merfolk to helm it.

Master of Waves + Deeproot Waters = for every Elemental one more 1/1 with hexproof? That would mean I can sometimes add peg. 20x 2/1 Elementals + 20 1/1 hexproof = 40 creatures in one turn?

I have a similar deck and don' t think that 4 colors are better. Makes it more expensive (manabase) and less consistent especially since most of them cost double blue

My local playgroup has a player that plays merfolk commander and his commander is also Derevi. He has been playing it for a while now. It is obnoxious.
