If you create a Dummy duplicate rule (e.g. "Manual Duplicate Accounts") you can open the "merge" UX (via the Duplicate Rules tab) which allows you to merge any accounts (even those not detected via an automation rule) manually in lightning, without navigating to classic.

That's a good workaround to stay within Lightning. I'd be hesitant for this workaround for those that track duplicate records. But from a merging perspective, this makes sense.
