And the video transition from Thames to Carlton was just as bad.

To be fair, the glitch for Thames to Carlton was because of BT switching the feed to the Crystal Palace transmitter, the Thames feed was coming from Thames' studios on Euston Road, whereas the Carlton feed was coming from their rented facilities at LWT. TVS' and Meridian's feeds were both coming from the same equipment in the same studios in Southampton so no switching required. In addition the Thames/Carlton switch - like the Thames/LWT switches that used to happen every Friday evening, would have not been as noticeable live on a TV set at the time as analogue TV sets have flywheel synchronisation to correct most errors like that. VCRs, like the one that recorded the clip uploaded to KZfaq errr... don't, as VCRs are totally dependent upon the sync pulses in the analogue signal they are recording, they have no method of correcting any errors in the sync pulses embedded in the analogue TV signal. A switch like that would have disturbed the continuity of sync pulses entering the VCR recording it, so the VCR takes a moment or two to lock its mechanism to the new sync pulses. This error is made even more obvious when you play the clip back as the mechanism tries to correct itself both for the sync pulse error on the original recording and also for the time taken for it to lock to the new signals when it was recording, and then the resulting sync error is too large for the TV set to correct instantaneously and it becomes obvious. So that's how something that will not have been obvious on a TV showing the live broadcast will be obvious once you play back a video recording of it. We're on to digital TV now and *far* better technology than VCRs and analogue TVs, so it's all academic anyway.

JR R Absolutely. Of course itv national 'branding' has not helped the situation, outsourcing most productions to smaller production houses. Very little itv telly is made by them nowadays, except for the old, Granada, Yorkshire, Carlton umbrellas. It's a joke really, but not a very funny one.

It was ridiculous that Meridian won the franchise. TVS's revenue projections turned out to be correct, and their bid was much higher.

they did have an attractive animated ident, just a shame the rest of the network didn't get to see it. I think they just did what carlton did and commissioned programmes from independent producers rather than produce any of their own output, apart from regional news.

I wouldn't say hated nationally, just that we didn't see much output from them compared to their predecessor. Carlton on the other hand presented some real turkeys and were a real shock after Thames.

A fair few of the Children's programmes were certainly creative in their own way like Wizadora and Zzap and animates short The Forgotten Toys. They had a shit ton of programming on cars and formula one though a lot of that was regional. And the 1996 film 'Emma' was courtesy of them too.

@@hakc97again the region in general did seem to get more children's programming on the network, though TVS went a bit further with more game shows and drama. Southern seemed happy with their lot and produced some memorable childrens output, but Out of Town made it across the network too.

All I can think of that Meridian produced of note for the ITV network was "Monkey Business" and "Wizadora".

None of the new stations got off to the best start did they. WestCountry didn’t even try and show the new year celebrations, Carlton’s new year show was mostly pre-corded and GMTV well I can’t imagine anyone would be up watching Breakfast telly on New Years Day. Do you think Meridian improved after their introductory shambles or were they just as bad as Carlton for you? I’ve tons of continuity and programmes from Meridian, most of the regional programs bring motor related and I suppose they’re all right if you’re into that stuff. Their original ident package was very slick I thought

@@hakc97again I was too young to remember TVS (being just 2 years old when they stopped broadcasting in 1992), but, by all accounts, a lot of people preferred/missed both TVS and Southern. However, Meridian's jingle and idents were great though.

No, in 1993, Thames was replaced by Carlton, TVS was replaced by by Meridian, TSW was replaced by Westcountry, then in 1999 there are replaced by Carlton (along with Central) and TV-am was replaced by GMTV
