Great vlog! Thanks for posting it. I am very glad to see inside the Haggard box car home again. It is indeed very small. By the way, that little add-on room in the rear of the house was actually Merle bedroom which his dad added after he was born. The front part was originally a porch which was later closed in to become the front room. Now, here's my story: I was in the Haggard house located at 1303 Yosemite Drive in Oildale (which is really just North Bakersfield on the other side of the Kern River) back in January 1985. I went there to visit Merle's oldest son Marty who was living there with his 1st wife and their two children. It was owned by Merle's mother Flossie until she died in 1984. Marty was in transition at the time, packed and ready to move to Nashville which he and his family did by the end of January. He and I had met via one of Merle's bandmembers Tiny Moore and Marty and I spent an evening visiting in that old train car home, playing guitars and checking out each other's songs. (By the way that old train car wasn't really a box car per se, it was in fact a "refridgerator car" for transporting perishable foods that were kept cold with dry ice.) Now for the rest of my story: My parents lived in Oildale from late 1952 to early 1955, just around the corner from Flossie Haggard where she and Merle resided. My dad worked in a dry cleaners by day at Empress Cleaners there in Oildale and Flossie worked there as a part-time presser and was the shop bookkeeper. Dad also played guitar in the bars and nightspots around Bakersfield with many of the local bands at night. Mom & Dad played Pinnochle on a regular basis with Flossie and her beau (she was a widow - Merle's father died in 1946 when he was only 9) and ate biscuits and pie made right there in the Haggard kitchen on that very stove! They only met Merle one time when he came in late one night after getting out of a juvenile detention center, he came home to get his guitar and grabbed a couple hot biscuits off that stove and shoved 'em in his jacket pocket. He said 'hello' to my folks and told his mama that he was going to go see "Uncle Buck" at the Blackboard and he left. He wasn't old enough to get into the Blackboard but that didn't deter him. He was about 14 or 15 at the time. I was almost born in Bakersfield but my mother who was pregnant with me at the time they were playing cards with Flossie Haggard, convinced my dad to move back to southern California where I was born. As a kid and young adult I spent most of my summers there with my mother's family in Bakersfield. I have walked the Streets of Bakersfield and I have had my feet in the Kern River! Thanks again for the vlog! That's a GREAT museum!!

OMG! i can't believe I'm seeing Pioneer Village on a KZfaq vlog! I grew up in Bakersfield and lived there most of my life. My mother and Bonnie Owens Haggard went to the same hair salon back in the late 60's early 70's and their home they built at the mouth of the Kern River, which he wrote a song about, was only a few miles from the home I grew up in. At school his step son told about the train that ran on a track through every room in their home. Once, as a young teen, I brought a cat home my mother said I couldn't keep. That evening my folks drove me and the cat out of town and when we got to the big fenced in mansion I put the cat over the fence as my mother instructed. She later would make lite and laugh and tell how I gave my cat to Merle Haggard. The recording studio located in Oildale on Chester Ave. later became a bar named Trouts, where in my much younger days, I spent a few Saturday nights dancing and enjoying the live bands. I also have some old photos of myself at around age 7 dancing near a bandstand where Buck Owens and the Buckaroos played as entertainment at a company picnic for the fertilizer plant where my father worked for many many years. I never could stand still if there was music playing and Buck Owens seen me and my cousin dancing in the isle and stopped the band and gestured for us to come down front to do our dancing. I remember thinking how handsome Doyle Holly was when I seen him up close. I live in Oklahoma now but my mother and brother are still in Bakersfield. My brother just retired from that very oil field talked about in the museum info you read in the video, which Buck looked out over from his home there in Bakersfield, located up on the cliff of Panorama Drive. My mother went to church with Merle's Aunt Hattie and after I married I lived a while just a few blocks from that "boxcar" home where he lived for awhile when he moved in with family who already lived there. His Aunt told stories of Merle running off at a young age just so he could ride the freight trains to other towns, other states, other places, because he wanted to be free. I have deep roots there and a lifetime of memories of the place and the people who walked the "Streets of Bakersfield", singing to us and giving us that "Bakersfield Sound". When the music was real Country AND Western.

Merle Haggard,'s parents was from Oklahoma and his siblings. Merle Haggard himself was born there in Oildale California. Thank you for doing this video. When I was about 16 years old back in 1982 my Mom and Dad took me and my sister to that Bakersfield Museum park. I loved it, thought it was the most awesome place to go. I'm glad you got to visit the place and enjoyed yourself as well. Bakersfield was one of my home towns as a kid growing up. Even in my adult life, around my early 30s. I moved back and forth from Tulare California, back to Bakersfield.

My husbands dad was the arresting officer back in 1964 when he broke into a Bar from the back while it was open, bartender said "why didn't you just come in the front" and again in 1965 for steeling a dirty magazine from a little store, he also wanted to go out with my husbands mom but she didn't want anything to do with him so he started dating her sister, Bakersfield was much smaller back then.

My family the group Alabama (daddy and two cousins) did a song on his tribute album. A true Country legend.

Hats' off to whomever came up with the design of the Kern. It's like walking through a real town only you can peak into every building without worrying about the police being called. As usual, Jordan really brought life to the place. Thanks Jordan :)

I don't usually comment on vlogs(just 'like' them) but I love this and love history! We have a couple parks like this in my city spanning 100 years(1850-1950) So many cool buildings like in this vlog. Big fan of your work! Thanks for keeping us entertained and sometimes educated :)

I worked in Northern California for a National delivery company. Merl’s ranch where he lived was in Palo Cedro near Redding CA. I delivered to him many times and he was always very nice when he happened to be there. Got to see his studio that is actually where his office was. Met his son on one occasion at the studio. The bus was also there and my bother worked for Detroit Diesel Allison Transmissions in the SF Bay Area and had worked on the his bus.

A prime example of how these places should be done. Land put to good use. Historical places preserved. Original locals free to do whatever time proves for them. Not a lot of waste. Very informative and imaginative. Quite an inspiring place to visit. Vlog-wise, I enjoy your low-key filming, explanations, and narratives. No flashy bologna. You show what you show and keep a calm, even keel about it. Very positive and fun outlook on what you present. This is why I keep coming back. Always something to learn and reflect upon. Thanx. The Bakersfield sign at the Crystal palace used to be across union, ave. Buck bought the letters from Bakersfield and replicated the sign. That sign is very old. Didn't know if you knew that.

Born, raised and stayed in Bakersfield all my life. "Pioneer village" has been a guge part of my childhood and life. I've seen the Kern County Museum grow and grow. They do a lot of amazing events and host many local events as well as rent out the facilities for weddings. For Halloween they do this great trick or treating festival where each house and exhibit has a candy station. A few years ago they started hosting la Dios de los muertos where altars are set up by people of the community and theres Mexican food and entertainment. Its beautiful! This museum has been a source of so many memories for me! Thank you for sharing this with people outside of my home town!

Wow Kern Co brings back so many memories! Keen Co always seemed to be part of California’s “mid west” and the people were just as friendly up there. We spent a ton of time up there while I was a kid, my dad’s favorite place to fish was off the Kern River (he’d be turning 80 today if he were still with us🙏). Thanks Jordan!

Unfortunately Buck was out of state doing a concert. But I did get out of the car and "Walk the Streets of Bakersfield " as his song went. But I never knew about the Kern museum, so I'm glad I got to tour it on your video!!!

What a fantastic museum. Kern County and Bakersfield are obviously interested in preserving cultural history in a unique and accessible way. Bakersfield is also an undercelebrated hotbed for auto racing - NASCAR champion Kevin Harvick grew up there.

I lived in Oildale when they moved the Haggard house to the museum. Watched it go down the road. Merle was there if I'm remembering correctly. The museum is one of my favorite and it's even better during the Christmas season.

I live in a small town near Bakersfield. And love that museum l drank in the fellows bar before they moved it there.

Good job on the vlog! The Saba sign was a uniform shop where police officers and sheriff’s officers could go and get their uniforms and equipment. Gary Saba was the founder his sons and grandson worked at the shop. The shop was very successful and the Saba family was known to give back to the community by donating large sums of money.

In 2018 his home came up for sale on Brae burn drive and the realtor found out it had been his home and put the information on the back of the flyer! Needless to say ..there were lots interested in just seeing it!!

We used to have Armistice Day parades in Pioneer Village.. good memories..

I'm from Bakersfield, but moved to the midwest in 93. Raised south of town in a subburb called Greenfield. My brother worked at Travlers resturant on old hwy 99 and Taft hwy when he was a young teen as a dishwasher Merle used to frequently come there and my brother got to meet him. Merle also had a mansion off hwy 178 at the mouth of the Kern Canyon. Rumors say he had a miniture train track that ran through the house to the outside around the decking. Kern county Museum used to be called Pioneer Village when I was a kid. I was born in Taft while my parents lived in Fellows. I have pictures of my mother standing outside with manyof the old wood oil dereks in the background. Thanks for spiking my memory!

I grew up in Fresno, but my grandmother lived in Bakersfield. I showed horses (quarter horses), but was not really a country-western fan. Great video. Bakersfield was known for country western music and oil derricks (actually in Oildale). Thank you belatedly.

Wow, thank you. I just happening to do my RT 66 trip. I gave myself a bunch of time in Bakersfield. Merle and Buck are awesome. Like X, Son's of the Pioneer's, Johnny Cash, and the Meat Puppets . Many Thumbs up.

This place was great! Merle was also sent to Preston School of industry (now referred to as Preston Castle) in Ione California. which you can tour. I believe he carved his name into a brick when he was there
