I always tell people it is like this: There is Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and George Jones. You rank em how you like. But, those are the greatest. I love them all intensely. However, I have to put a thumb on the scales for Merle.

You know whether you like country music or not you have to admit he had the most terrific Voice and a great instrumentalist I've listened to Merle since I was seventeen years old and he's my favourite of all time. That song has some great lyrics. How many times do you think Mearle went on stage feeling bad. Those footlights bright and in his face. But still had to smile for his fans. I think Mearle went down fast after he realized it was over as far as tours go. Grew up on Mearle and still listening at 63. What a great songwriter, musician and singer. There aren't many that were ever out there like that. ( Hank William's, Mearle Haggard, Kris kristofferson , Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan) They were songwriters first . And wrote many songs for many different artist including themselves, but out of all who among these greats I still have to say Hank William's and Mearle Haggard will always be at the top of the list. Takes a different breed to be able to do what Hank, Mearle, Kris, and Bob did . Songwriters first as I said and always Mearle Haggard will be my favorite of all time.

I saw the Hag two nights ago in Winchester, VA. It was my third time seeing Merle. His voice isn't quite what it once was, but he's still better than most all these country "stars" of today. He played this song and sure enough walked away without no curtain call. If you have the chance go see him while you still can.

Always had a special place in my heart for Merle. I rememeber when I was about 10 years old sitting in my grandparents living room late at night back in the Louisiana woods and hearing "Sing me back home" playing quietly over the radio. So hauntingly beautiful at that time and place and I became a huge fan of his. Everytime I hear Merle it takes me back to those better days and it's bitter sweet. Rest in peace
