In this video I explain why the delay locator hardly ever locks on to the impulse response of the subwoofers and if it succeeds, it's unlikely it syncs to the very frequencies we're trying to align our main speakers to.

Thank you for the lecture. I only understood about half of it. Phase in audio is difficult to hear or intuit. The analogy with a spring was helpful.

Great explanation!, thank you so much Merlijn for doing these videos, for people like me living in places with no pro audio schools or seminars these are super helpful... So, what is your preferred method for aligning subs to mains?

Great video, but isn't it the title slightly misleading? The presented facts and information/interpretation are leading to one clear result - "Why the delay finder won't work for subwoofers" .-). The IR works well for subwoofers, same as for full ranges. Problem is created if you try to time align IR of full ranges and subwoofers, because in the "default" situation both IR's display "different" information. Situation rapidly changes when you apply for example BandPass filter at 125 Hz (1 oct) on both IR's. In this case both IR's (FR + SUB) will display the very similar information (close bandwidth and amplitude) content and usualy you can cut 95% of time difference almost instantly (much faster than from looking on the phase graph). Than you can switch to pahse and do the minor tweaks (the remaining 5%). PS: In poor D/R ratio conditions not only the impulse is hard to find, also the phase information is almost all hidden in "noise". Very handy for finding the impulse arrival could be Schroeder curve display - unfortunately phase graph hasn't tool like this, only the IR ! According to my experiences the IR are very handy also for subwoofers :-)

Hi Merlijn, Do you know where we can find those Meyer Sound webinars in 2020?, They're not in Meyer sound website anymore, do you know why they were all removed?
