@@Musicienne-DAB1995 Yeah, people love to blame Merlin. Morgana was already turning dark and would have continued down that road, and it's likely her hatred of Uther would win out over her love for Arthur. As for Mordred, he chose a girl who tried to kill his king over the monarch he swore an oath to. Arthur gave her a chance, and she spurned it, and Merlin pleaded on her behalf. Everything that happened is squarely on Mordred. I highly doubt Merlin not trusting him was a big deal to him.

Merlin tries way too hard to prevent Arthur’s death, that it just turned everyone against him which causes it. Poisoning Morgana for one and betraying Mordred for another. I love Merlin but sometimes he can just make stupid decisions.

This scene just kind of reminds me of when Merlin was hiding Freya beneath the castle, and he begged for Gaius to give him a few days to get her out before he told Uther (because Freya was cursed and hurting people, so Gaius felt that it was necessary to tell him), and Gaius didn't listen and it ultimately lead to Freya's death. This episode as a whole just has so many parallels to the episode with Freya, and I was kind of hoping to see if Merlin would have noticed that/how he might have reacted had he not been made aware of Mordred's destiny and trusted him more.

it's sad it all happened like that, cause Arthur could be still alive if it didnt... but as much as I'm sad about it i understant Merlin. it was ride or die for him. If Freya did something to Arthur I think that Merlin wouldve saved Arthur and, if needed, kill her. Merlin had his reasons, he was fighting for what he believed in (Arthur being great king) for years, why stop now, the time he was most needed? I agree that they could've even just shown something, anything, related to Freya in this situation, even just to be more dramatic, but on another side, nothing, not even Freya mattered to Merlin the way Arthur mattered to him, so... You understant him

This series means much to me so Ive choosen to believe its real in a paralel universe and in that universe, Arthur never left, actually lived forever with Merlin by his side. Also I just remembered "your secret is safe with me" is what Lancelot once told Merlin, so maybe thats a throwback worth smiling about. Hope youre all good, see you in a year ❤

This season was the only time I was genuinely ANGRY at Merlin! He kept treating Mordred so poorly, even when he was trying to help. He respected Arthur and if Merlin had just had some Faith in him not Destiny he could prevented Arthur's death!! The part that felt the most stupid to me was in the last episode before the two part finale. Mordred: I'm going to break my Girlfriend out and Leave. We will never comeback and we will never see each other again. Merlin: *Goes and Tell Athur what they are doing* *2 minutes later* Merlin: Arthur you could just let them go. Me: WHAT?!!!?? THEN WHY DID YOU EVEN TELL ARTHUR!!!!
@PL-xl8gn

The reason why he treated Mordred poorly was because he thought he was deceiving everyone, that he was a betrayer in disguise. He realizes that Mordred was good turned bad this episode. He had loads of reasons to distrust him as it is.

Merlin believed in the prophesy and the crystals showed him something too. We can blame him for being too naive about it but we can't blame him for doing everything in his power to prevent harm from coming to Arthur. Merlin is in a very difficult spot when it comes to Mordred since he could rattle him out any moment. Mordred was an ambiguous character with his history from s2 and the writing in s5 could have been better. His motive for betraying and subsequently killing Arthur was based on how he treated Kara? Arthur was magnanimous and lenient to her but couldn't help when she still wanted to kill him. The writers should have given Mordred are more convincing motive.

@@granville7 Interesting point. Not sure what I think about whether Kara was convincing enough as a motive for betrayal, but it does help me revive from the emotional rollercoster of 5x11. You are right about his ambiguity in 2x11, though.

recently, I rewatched s05e01 and s05e02 and found myself agreeing with Dylan, the TS from above in the sense that s5 was the first time I was genuinely angry at Merlin. In s05e02 at 15:01 he was *shouting* at Arthur for not killing Mordred with a crossbow after their escape from the slave trader. Arthur already managed to shot the crossbow three times but spared Mordred and Merlin was livid. maybe it was high time we've got to see other sides of Merlin, not just the charming, loving, dorky, puppy-eyed cinnamon roll of the first 4seasons. s05e05 'The Disir' is another example. what the Disir are doing there is quite complicated and even now I'm not entirely sure to have completely worked it out yet so I forgive Merlin for being stumped given the time he had to grasp their scheme. however, the writers made his dialogue with Arthur particularly maddening. Merlin was asked if Arthur should allow magic back into Camelot and Merlin's reasoning for refusing was stupid even when he didn't really get what the disir were doing. back to Kara and s05e11: we and the writers knew it would be Mordred who kills Arthur in the end regardless if the show got renewed for another season or not. they wrote Mordred into someone Arthur made a knight so he had to eventually betray him with a motive before killing him. a love interest like Kara could do that in theory. but Mordred wasn't seen much interested in women and we didn't know Kara for long. it was all very sudden. disregarding all that it could have been convincing nonetheless. but why make Kara so stubborn? Arthur offered her a way out but she was hellbent on killing him anyway. why link Mordred to a woman who wants his king dead against all reason? makes it all far less convincing for us to believe Mordred would place his love for a woman we have almost no connection to above his loyalty and love for Arthur. why didn't the writers give him a more compelling reason to betray Arthur?

he sacrificed himself many times. I mean, you sayin he was supposed to really commit suicide so he could be trusted by Merlin in his last breath but since it already happened, he is supposed to reamin dead forever. Hell yeah, no. He did everything in his power, Arthur and Merlin had betrayed him. The only person that accepted Mordred was Morgana so, it makes sense and I hate what Merlin did. Truth is, destiny played Merlin. He never had betrayed them, but when he asked for only one thing, promising to never comeback for the sake of Kara, they just forbid it. Arthur could close his eyes and let things be, but he also couldn't. Theres a paralell, Merlin has grown a darkness inside him. Mordred where fully wishing a good future, full of light for those with magic. Freedom and love. Merlin was seeing Arthur above all goodness. I think Mordred was stronger to last so long against the cold sholder of his kin, Emrys, his savior.

Tbh I blame Gaius and Kilgarrah. Merlin used to be a really happy, open-minded chap but gets told that Morgana will go evil, Mordred will go evil, don't be nice to them, don't tell Arthur about your magic. None of this would have happened had Merlin not been influenced by them. Had it solely been his choice, he wouldn't have been so distrusting, he would have been nice to both and revealed himself very early. So much pain could have been spared

On the one hand, all Merlin had to do was look the other way this one time and let them both go. But. The girl was overtly gunning for Arthur, Merlin was aware that Mordred *would* kill Arthur. I can understand Merlin feeling like he couldn't live with it if they did eventually come back with a better plan and get at Arthur. At the same time, Mordred actually hadn't done anything yet. Merlin's bid to tell Arthur but recommend leniency seems like him trying to compromise between everything. Still show some kindness towards Mordred and the girl, without ignoring what seems to him like a dangerous threat to Arthur. And hope that if Arthur is lenient, it might sway their opinions of Arthur. Merlin seems to spend this entire season unhinged at the prospect of Arthur getting killed. He can't deal with being as powerful as he is, knowing what he knows, and all the hardships and sacrifice he has gone through up to this point - and yet be unable to change this fate he finds unbearable. What good is all of Merlin's power if it's nothing but sacrifice and terrible choices, and he can't actually save his friend?

Nonsense! It was Merlin who betrayed Mordred to Arthur. Mordred asked Merlin for one thing. "Do not betray me" And Merlin went and did exactly that. Mordred had no beef with Arthur, that's why he went and spoke to him before rescuing the Druid girl. It was his way of saying Goodbye and reassuring Arthur that there were no hard feelings. But Merlin had to go an ruin everything by betraying Mordred and ratting him out to Arthur.
@Musicienne-DAB1995
@Musicienne-DAB1995 3 жыл бұрын
@@abongilezolanipeterson5588 It's not that simple. I was appalled by Merlin's fixation on the prophecy about Mordred throughout Season 5. He definitely admitted to causing the very thing he tried to prevent. However, Kara's insistence on murdering Arthur, and her allegiance with Morgana made her a constant threat. Merlin could definitely have tried communicating more with Mordred, but he had just seen the sorceress, Finna, die recently, telling him not to trust Mordred. I still feel disappointed with Merlin's actions in this episode-- part of the reason I am rendered speechless by it-- but it is too simplistic to blame him for betraying Mordred.

I really thought about it and my first idea would be to befriend that person, so he has no reason for killing the one I love. (Mordred loved Arthur as his friend/king, so that was already great) If I was a very good friend to him and helped him, I would be close to him, giving him no reason to be angry with me or my loved one, and, so I could see and prevent it, if that person shows signs of feeling betrayed or anything that would make me think now is the time of the vision. Be close to your friends, closer to your enemies or however that saying goes.

Everyone’s saying that it’s all Merlins fault that Mordred turned evil but he’s working completely on his own and while he might be a powerful sorcerer he’s still a human and he’s bound to make mistakes, he’s constantly told that Morgana and Mordred are going to be evil so while he may have contributed to their betrayals it is natural for him to do the things he did. Especially when it came to poisoning Morgana because he could see no clear way out of the situation and if he hadn’t done that then how else would he have stopped the immortal army
@granville7

exactly my thinking too. not sure what better option Merlin had to prevent the immortal knights from killing everyone in the citadel if he didn't take out Morgana somehow since she was the 'vessel' and although suspecting it herself did nothing to save her friends and family.

I am not yet sure about what to think after watching large sections of 5x11, but Merlin was not responsible for Mordred's betrayal. That was Mordred's own decision. However, Merlin made a horrible decision in 5x11, and you can tell that from the difficulty he has exposing Mordred's plan to Arthur, as well as his desperate, failed attempt to fix it. At the same time, Merlin and Arthur both had good reason to fear what Kara might do if released, since she, despite several offers, refused to renounce her bloodthirstiness. Kara caused serious problems here, and her arguments in her defence were disingenuous. As Arthur said, she had not been arrested for being a sorcerer, but for murder. She claimed that she committed murder to fight for her freedom, but look at Mordred's face when she stabbed a Camelot soldier to death. He knew what she had done was wrong. 5x11 is so complicated and so emotional that I have had to rethink several of my ideas about the entire series. Damn! I think I will have to return to pretending this episode never happened.

As far as we know Arthur doesn’t kill innocent people (especially women) even when they’re the enemy. And for the 'druid-thing‘: Arthur promised in episode 4x10 that he will respect the druid people. Can't believe people blame Merlin for Mordred's actions, seriously, It wasn't Merlin who told about girl and cave, Arthur found it by himself, also Merlin when understood that it was probably druid girl said nothing about it, so where is his betrayal? Yes he said about their escaping but if he didn't this would help no one (maybe of course but let's think) here would be only 2 ways if he didn't say. Either fugitives would be found and girl - dead/ Arthur battled with Mordred, or they would be lived somewhere and then a girl which he loved would set up Mordred against Camelot and Arthur, she wouldn't stop her attempts in killing or fighting. this is exactly a vicious circle of fate. They were people who wanted the same but their loyalty was different: Mordret to his loved one, then it would be his "people"/ Merlin's to Arthur and Camelot. Morded already betrayed Morgana, it was only a time when he would betray others

Merlin didn't make Morgana or in this case mordred evil...their loyalty was always divided...in case of Morgana, she loved Arthur but she also had inner conflict that morgause was right and it was a matter of time , when she would have chosen her people over pendragons....in case of mordred, his love for kara was more than his love for Morgana or Arthur or even the great Emrys he seemed to admire...kara would have continued to harm Arthur and it was a matter of time when Arthur would have punished her even if mordred begged him not to do it...Arthur couldn't have just let kara go everytime, may be he would have considered once or twice but not everytime

If only he would've killed Mordred when he was younger like Kilgarrah said to keep the prophecy from coming true, and just letting his emotions cloud his judgement, Arthur would've survived past the battle of Camlaan. Not to be slain by the hands of Mordred. Otherwise, Merlin would've kept a way closer watch on him at all times to see if he would ever betray Arthur. Since he is his man servant and closest thing he has to a brother.

I have mixed feelings on this. Yes I agree this is similar to how Merlin thought and felt towards Morgana. But he thought he was doing what was right for Arthur and the future of Camelot; hopefully Albion. This would definitely have been different if Arthur knew Mordred had magic. Mordred’s love would not hate Arthur. She and Mordred could be together. With Mordred on Camelots side, they would have had a better chance in the final battle with Morgana.

The guy playing Mordred looks older than Merlin but at least 5 years! Like if anyone can give me accurate ages of the characters that would be great like no hate to the guy playing Mordred coz he's freaking awesome but they couldn't have found some way of making him look just a little bit younger? xxx

It seems like Merlin is turning evil, not Mordred. Seriously, what is wrong with you, man???

TimeSarin Merlin knew the prophecy says Mordred would kill Arthur. Merlin was also jealous of Mordred because Arthur liked him and trusted him.

@@cristinejilimy9847 YES. I am clearly not the only one who noticed Merlin's jealousy of Mordred.

they intentionally made it look like Merlin was becoming very morally grey near the end of the show. how he practically bullies Mordred and how he ruthlessly killed Morgana and Agravaine without so much as a twitch.

I did love this show for the acting, the sets, the costumes... but the writing... So is this story really trying to make believe that it was totally ok and right NOT to do anything about Uther's tyranny, no matter how many lives it cost, but totally ok to condemn Morgana and just label her as evil, even BEFORE she did anything evil? Destiny is to blame? Profecies are to blame for the creation of Arthur's enemies? Nope. It was those who chose to just sit and wait for the time when Arthur would be king, because that's so nice and passive! What pretty little cinderella's! My ass! All those that Uther killed (and that includes children) couldn't WAIT and the so called ''villains'' in this story knew that. They cared! Morgana's problem was with Uther's actions, not with Arthur becoming king. Nor she cared for the throne. That just makes no sense! I guess they could've at least given us some more scenes with her going mad, or... I don't know, making her sister manipulate her and poisoning her against Arthur or something that would at least attempt to justify her sudden switch from integrity to psychopathy. Really the good guys weren't good at all. They refused to make Uther face any consequence for what he did, as if that is the right thing to do. Ridiculous! And that so beloved Gaius, many times he gave Merlin some really bad advice. He failed Morgana like a freakin coward when she needed him the most. And then she's the evil witch? C'mon! This story is a mess.

I do find it strange that narratively the people who are victims of genocide in the show are held to the same standard morally as the people heading the regime committing their genocide. I still love the show but some things are a little questionable.

I want an alternative version were he just thinks a bit and makes no stupid descisions and doesn't try to poisen Morgana or betray Mordred.

Quatschk0pf you must have skimmed the season where he poisoned Morgana instead of actually watching it. Merlin had every reason to poison Morgana. Betraying Mordred on the other hand was just plain stupid.

Lol arthur uses magic to save his ugly faced queen he loved but Mordrid didn't use magic to save his beautiful love, Arthur said things will change, yeah he lies and does the same thing, at least uther didn't lie about it, and Merlin lol, how many times did he help people with magic escape? Arthur and Merlin both suck, but truly the writers suck, and merlin let the baby dragon be tortured, I have become a fan of morgana all of a sudden lol

mordred did the mistake of being a simp for a foolish girl ..
@granville7
@granville7 3 жыл бұрын
alas the girl wasn't 'foolish', more like fanatically enticed to kill Arthur no matter what. Arthur was so kind to her, pardoned her, showed leniency and was his magnanimous self and still she wanted to kill him. and the writers made Mordred blind and mad enough to take her death as motive for betraying Arthur. not very convincing since the writers tried all s5 to make us believe Mordred loved Arthur too.

@@granville7 Then again, Mordred had seen other Druids killed as a child by Camelot's soldiers. So I think they could have had a better transition between the end of Season 2 and the beginning of Season 5.
