To explain the corpse counter a bit, I believe it’s just meant as a reminder for paper magic that this should be exiled when it dies. Without the counter it’s much easier to forget, especially on complicated boards.

A lot of cards with persistent effects use something similar, the one which comes to mind is that Black legend from m19, Isareth the Awakener, which upon reread also uses a corpse counter.

TIL Corpse Counters are from Alpha Corpse counters first appeared on Scavenging Ghoul in Alpha as an unnamed counter which was later errated to be a corpse counter. At the end of each turn, the Ghoul would gain a corpse counter for each creature that died that turn. It could then exchange a corpse counter to regenerate itself.

The corpse counter is only to help remind you which creatures will be exiled if they would leave the battlefield. If you somehow remove a corpse counter from a creature that was put onto the battlefield this way, the replacement effect that will exile it continues to apply. Similarly, moving the corpse counter onto another creature has no effect on that creature; the replacement effect will continue to apply to the original creature.
