You always find fascination in the otherwise mundane. In the 1970's Kirkdale epitomised the grim post industrial decline that The Port and Liverpool was going through. Fascinating to learn of it's history, it was clearly an intersection of great investment and importance even then. I must have some photos somewhere of the station circa 1972, but probably of me and me mates gooning it up. Cheers MW always a treat watching your channel.

It is sad how a once busy railway location has declined over the decades. Though the enlarged depot for Stadler & the new trains has brought about a small turn in fortune

I have a lasting memory, should explain I can remember being 2 years old then thinking I’d been 3 for ages so my long term memory is amazing I’m almost 50. I remember looking over a bridge at multiple tracks and I’m certain that would have been on the Northern line. As previously explained my Grandma lived in Formby at 18 College Avenue which was lineside between Formby and Freshfield stations. I can only imagine the view was over the bridge which separates the Southport and Ormskirk/Kirkby. I remember a huge number of sidings and loops which were definitely not at Southport. Kirkdale is the only station I can consider to be where this memory comes from. I really wish I could put my memories to better use. I was born in March 1973 but my memories go back to 1974/75. I’m also aware of Col Parker’s death on the crossing between Freshfield and Formby stations.

It does sound like Kirkdale as apart from Southport it's the only location on Merseyrail Where you could have seen such lines. The crossing accident will be covered when I do Formby / Freshfield. Also the notorious fisherman's crossing will be covered, though done with respect

@@Merseywail They reached an agreement with the train guards union but have still not had talks with ASLEF the drivers union regarding training to drive the new rolling stock. No doubt the requirement of a financial inducement will be the reason. Albeit the drivers were released from the responsibility of driver only trains, retaining guards on board, which caused a lengthy period of strikes..

@Merseywail a kirkby episode would be so appreciated, I understand that the current site of the northern line station, was a new build, the original station which was on the opposite side of the road bridge on the Wigan platform, also having double lines serving now deleted platforms and original ticket office and ancillary railway buildings washed away with the modernisation the old cobbled sloped road is still partly visible to where goods & coal access as enabled down to the trackside 'opposite' the (current at this time) Wigan destination single platform💜

Love these videos! It's so refreshing to see well-researched videos about railways outside of London, especially since they're local to me personally! If you further cover closed lines/tunnels/etc. in the Merseyside area, would you consider also covering their potential to be re-opened, or plans therein? BetterTransport's "Reopen rail lines" webpage is a decent resource for this, though not extensive. People seem to have given up hope on railways being expanded or brought up to modern standards, and seem to have put all of their proverbial eggs in the automobile basket, and these are things I believe can be changed with increased awareness on the topic. If you're ever going to cover the (ex-) Liverpool Extention Line (erroneously called the Liverpool Loop Line by some...), my offer to get footage on your behalf still stands, though I'm still stuck with just my phone's camera for now.
@Merseywail
@Merseywail Жыл бұрын
Cheers for the offer. I am going to do the "lost" lines of Merseyrail and am working on it. I hope to get access to various plans for the "outer loops" CLC extension if I can. There were other extensions and closures proposed in the Merseyrail plans, these are to be covered too. I will have a look at that site
