I mean it kind of makes sense, Mereum couldn't kill Netero and he is a newborn and doesn't know how to use nen that well. While Netero is way better at using nen and creating things. All Meruem had was super speed and super strength

Now that I think about it, the 2 times meruem cut off a lim brom netero, he could have killed netero. It still would have been a tie though because of his true blood rose or whatever its called.

The thing about this arc is that at the end Gon and Netero our paragons are reduced to mere "monsters" by their human flaws and are resolved to let nothing change their mind about killing even at the expense of their own life while this absolute monster of a being (that's barely been alive for a month) has found love and understands that just because he could kill something doesn't mean he's better than it. This is the real picture: Savage monster who cares for nothing else in the world violently barges into the house of a gentleman and forces him to fight him by putting his beloved in danger and when he tries to forgive him, make peace, let him leave alive and go back to spend time with his loved ones the moster self destructs employing a combination of a nuclear weapon and substance so toxic that the land may never really be inhabitable again. The gentleman's loyal allies give their lives to help him make a recovery from the damage done by the explosion. At which point he still holds nothing against the beastly race and goes back to his girl consoles her and they spend their last moments enjoying each other's company as they slowly die from the poison. So yeah Netero could not compare to Meruem not just in strength but in any way whatsoever at the end of the arc. Meruem and Killua's grandfather both of whom are established as murderers really contrast the fall of Netero and Gon in the last battle. Personally I would've been more satisfied with the story if Meruem and Komugi got to survive even if Gon had died. Throw in Killua to make it 2 for 2. Maybe he'd die trying to use Nanika or something I dunno.
