I love my Robert DeNiro, my Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson or Marlon Brando, but no actor ever, regardless of their gender, has given me the kind of feelings Meryl Streep has. In 2017, I decided to buy every film she got Oscar-nominated for on DVD, and watched them all in just a few weeks. It was a masterclass in acting, simple as that. So many memorable characters with so many layers and depth. She is indeed a cinematic treasure:) She will be 75 shortly. May she live another 20 years at least!

I have a same experience. I felt in love with her through "Devils" and never seen any of her films before. In 2008, after "Mamma Mia!', I decided to watch all of her Oscar-nominated films and felt overwhelmed after. "She has so many 'crystal masks'! How could she do it!?" - I said to myself.

My thoughts: I agree on The Iron Lady, Streep's performance was excellent, but the movie itself is very poor. It's also uncomfortably exploitative with all the scenes of elderly Margaret Thatcher suffering from Alzheimer's. Julie & Julia should've been her third Oscar, her performance as Julia Child is full of life and just a delight to watch every step of the way. A much better biopic role than The Iron Lady. A great movie (the Julia parts at least) that always makes me hungry, lol. Her performance is close to the top for me. Streep called The French Lieutenant's Woman the worst movie she's made, lol. I can never watch Sophie's Choice again. It was too devastating, especially the titular scene. Great video! I need to watch The Bridges of Madison County now.

I completely agree. It's definitely in my Top 10. I think some critics unfairly accused Meryl of chewing the scenery. But the character of Violet is written as having fits of histrionics....and with good reason: she's a drug-addled elderly woman who's dying of cancer and is in considerable physical pain on a regular basis (as well as emotional pain of course). So I don't think Meryl's performance comes across in any way as "showy" - just realistic. Plus her character doesn't act that way throughout the entire film, which makes sense considering the ups and downs someone in her condition would be experiencing. I always cite the "cowboy boots" scene as an example of one of Violet's more retrained moments. And I think it's probably the most affecting scene in the movie. I compare it somewhat to the "getting divorced" scene from Prada. It really gives the viewer some insight into why this miserable, seemingly horrible human being acts the way she does. And Meryl of course performs it beautifully. Perhaps a little verbose on my part regarding this topic - LOL - but I thought I'd use your positive comment about OOC as a chance to share my similar view that Meryl does tremendous work in that film.

@@richardherdman2121 yes, Meryl is always trying to do something new to the cinema , Her character is a drunken woman and she nailed it , that is her power actually, no one did that kind of brash performance , it was work out strongly between Meryl and Julia 🔥❤️💯 That’s why we love her 🫡

Brian, you're an absolute legend for this. Thank you for taking the time to go through her impressive performances over the decades. Have immense love for her performances in Sophie's Choice, The Bridges Of The Madison County, Doubt, Kramer Vs. Kramer, Adaptation, Julie & Julia, Silkwood, Devil Wears Prada, Postcards From The Edge, French Lieutenant's Woman, A Cry In The Dark, and so many others! On The Iron Lady, it's not controversial. It wouldn't make my top 20, let alone my top 10. I wouldn't have The Post in my top 10, but I respect others that do. August: Osage County is one of her best for me. Hell, Sarah Paulson's Tony win for her performance in Appropriate feels very reminiscent of that so I feel it's rightfully strong and influential in that regard. Agreed that Death Becomes Her would have made an all timer nomination, and her performance in The Hours should have been there too, she did make Globes & BAFTA so I don't think she was far off. Thanks, Brian ❤

I agree with your rankings. I'm not as hard on "Florence Foster Jenkins" performance as you or anyone else discussing Streep's Oscar nominations. Did you know Streep was not originally cast as Joanna In "Kramer Vs. Kramer"? She was cast in the JoBeth Williams role, and Kate Jackson was cast as Joanna. The filming was going to overlap with Jackson's filming schedule with her television series "Charlie's Angels." However, Aaron Spelling wouldn't budge, and Jackson has to drop out. Then Robert Benton moved Streep into the role and cast Williams as the naked woman the little boy encountered in the hallway late at night. 😅

Please do a video on ranking Meryl Streep's other performances that were not nominated for an Oscar. It can be top 20 or top 10. I bet Death Becomes Her is #1 and we can find others like The River Wild, Mamma Mia, Marvin's Room, Little Women in the ranking.

Brian actually did a video like this recently. Just check his recent uploads, you should find it easily. And (hint hint) I think you'll be very pleased with his choices! :)

Sandra Bullock once said that Meryl should have her own Oscar category. 😅 But in fact I really don't think that Meryl should had been nominated that much. She kind of became this joker card thrown on the table whenever the academy members don't know for who they should give a fifth vote. Iron Lady was well deserved, it's her best performance in a long, long time. No matter how good she is, most of the time I see Meryl acting more than a full character, and that not happens in Iron Lady at all. I personally love August, but I agree that her nomination wasn't necessary, although her performance is memorable as Violet.

Annette Benning in American Beauty, Hilary Swank in Boy's Don't Cry, Reese Witherspoon in Election, Kirsten Dunst in The Virgin Suicides, and Cecilia Roth in All About My Mother. These should've been the 1999 Best Actress Nominees with Annette Benning winning.

Brian is there any year where she wasn’t nominated, that you think she should’ve been or if she was nominated for the wrong film, if so then what.

I will never forget how disappointed I was that Meryl didn't win an Oscar for "Doubt." That long multi-decade Oscar drought SHOULD have ended there. Great movie. I would have loved to have seen her win for "Julie & Julia" as well. Despite being a huge fan of Meryl Streep, somehow I never saw "Bridges of Madison County" until very recently. (I think I avoided it because Clint Eastwood bugs me.) What an amazing performance she gave!!! Brilliant. (True to form, I was really irritated that Eastwood had the NERVE to give himself top billing over Meryl Streep in the credits. It's just absurd.)

Death Becomes Her is a great choice for a nomination. My other choice is Ricki and The Flash.

A great video and a monumental accomplishment. I saw Sophie’s Choice in the theater after reading the book. I was very curious to see how the choice was portrayed. I was not prepared for the wallop it was. I’ve never experienced anything like it in a movie. People walked out, and I’m sure it was because it was impossible to process in the moment. That was Ms. Streep. Hilary Swank’s rape in Boys Don’t Cry is my runner up for most hard to take moment in a theater…but the choice conveyed all you ever need to know about living with the brutality and horror of a psycho regime in a society that endorses all of it.

Out of all respect to incredible Meryl Streep, I still think that in 2012 Academy Award best actress should’ve gone to Viola Davis (The Help). And yes, Meryl Streep should’ve won in 2009 with “Doubt”

I’m about to watch and I’m going to bet Brian picked Sophie’s Choice as #1. I would have picked Kramer vs Kramer. I love that movie and her performance.

Streep really elevated the Devil Wears Prada from a book that’s just rants about an old boss into a feminist manifesto about modern women in the workplace.

Agree - how underrated her performance (and the movie) -- a cry in the dark. Disagree -- her performance (and the movie) -- Florence Foster Jenkins. i watched a FFJ documentary before watching the movie. I don't have the link. But she Nails the true FFJ and the movie honors the bizarre reality the film underscores.
