Yes it's a sad moment in Meryl's life although something good came out of it. Yes she was engaged and when filming the Deer Hunter John got bone cancer and died. Since they were living together and lease was under John's name she was evicted and her brother Dana said that he was watching the apartment of his friend Don Gummer who was in Europe and let her stay at Don's apartment when he showed up sooner than he was suppose to so he saw Meryl in his apratment and the rest is history!!!
