I don’t think Meryl looks average. I have always thought she had a beautiful face, her cheek bones, nose, jaw and overall face shape is gorgeous. It’s simple but so strong

Yes she's very beautiful, not a perfect baby face or a sexpot, but in a classy and cool way. But in her very young years she was also very much classically beautiful. She was in fact a cheerleader and looked like one. There are plenty of pretty women like her in hollywood, her looks were never her main asset, despite being beautiful.

she has really strong bone structure that has definitely helped her as she's aged. I never really thought she was pretty when I was younger and only knew her for her work from 2000s or so on but photos of her from before then show how attractive she was and honestly still is.

What sets Meryl Streep apart and elevates her over these other actresses is she's able to master every genre. She's not a one trick pony. From comedy, horror, drama, musicals. Not many actresses have that range so let them hate. That type of talent doesn't come along often. Meryl is definitely a force of nature. Simply amazingly talented. She deserves every accolade she's given.

Meryl is very much herself and deserves the praise, the other actress on the same level (IMHO) is the fearless, awe-inspiring Jessica Lange. Meryl was taken seriously as an actress from the start, but Jessica knocked the haters out when she revealed the subtlety and depth of what she was capable of. Fun fact: Meryl actually was sent to audition for the role Jessica played in King Kong, and afterward, Dino DiLaurentiis told his son in Italian "She's not beautiful enough", to which Meryl looked him in the eye and said in his language, "I don't like that!" She explained in an interview, "I had had Italian 101 at Vassar, you know?" Love it.

I don’t think it’s as much about jealousy as it is about understandable frustration with how the industry is run. It is already a severely limiting machine for women as they age, with so very few women being considered for good roles, and one woman at the very top of that list. It’s understandable why this would be a topic brought up by folks in the business. Also I don’t think jealousy is at the root of such criticisms along the lines of her relationship with Harvey Weinstein. I actually can’t stand the way Rose McGowan has gone on this rampage that began with MeToo and seems to be more about her own trauma and her own narcissism than anything else, but she wasn’t out of line pointing out what she did about Streep and Weinstein.

@1027 EastSide So you think Rose McGowan rightfully complaining about how she was rap*d and how many people in Hollywood gaslit her or straight up lied to protect their own asses, is wrong? If you were rap*d and then blacklisted, I doubt you would behave normally or not complain or go insane about it. You are clearly very victim blaming and male identified piece of trash. Get the help out of this channel, you garbage!

Meryl is an example of how you can be a great actor with limited range. Jack Nicholson is another example. I dont think she's overrated. Same here. Meryl Streep has for a long time been among my favorite actors. I just like how she just comes out simply just being herself. Some call them the realest, but you can really see the true nature of that person. So I don't see any favoritism shown her, or need for jealousy, they just need to bump up their own performance. Because she has earned her place where she's at, and has the ulcers to prove it. Maybe they need to grow and ulcer, before they start judging. It very well could be that Meryl may not have given a stellar performance in some movie, but one thing for sure the person who comes out, as the realist, always take home the crown, the fake ones just don't. Unwritten rule.

I agree. This, to me, is the role that solidifies her place as the greatest actress of our lifetime settled as canon. First, because she learned German and then chose to learn how to speak it with a Polish accent for the role. But mostly because of "The Scene". Those three horrific minutes that give the film its title and that won her the Academy Award. How she struggles to find her voice and assert herself safely to the SS officer, the way you can read her thoughts on her face, and how you can actually see her brain break just by the subtle change in her eyes and her quivering lips when she realizes what is being asked of her. That whole scene was shot in one take. The little girl's terror, screams, and tears are real. Meryl's tears are real. Her silent scream was unscripted. All of it was real and captured in one take. And once you've seen it, you never ever unsee it.

She is naturally beautiful in my opinion but it also seems that she makes good decisions about her image. Her features also make her marketable, Hollywood's profits is all about marketing. Her family did great by teaching her confidence early. People underestimate how important that is to developing who you are. She gives off the confident vibe and to many people they either take it as you're arrogant or " she doesn't have anything i don't have". She is just doing what everyone wishes they could, which is making who you are work for you and being ok with that. There are other options people can choose beside resentment and envy to deal with those that are or appear confident in themselves.

Meryl works hard and polishes her craft. I have noticed when you are pretty, confident and focused on doing your best in anything in life, people, especially woman to woman, have a problem with it. Jealousy is an ugly thing! We should be encouraging each other not tearing one another down. Just the other day, an old work friend said I shouldn't think I am any better then her just because I'm wearing heals, dresses, losing weight and wearing make-up now. I have not spoken to this woman in over 10 years! Yes, when I was at uni, I wore plain clothes, only had a few for best dresses and only wore make-up when we went out as I couldn't afford to replace it after using it so often. I was the fat plain jane in the workplace whilst at uni. I see her comment as confirmation that I am on the right path. We as women should be happier for each other instead of competitive, especially when we see a fellow sister lose weight, look and feel better. I like Meryl Steep. I always felt she had a unique and beautiful face, different from the usual botoxed nightmares. When I look at her I think "classy". She's one of a few actresses who I consider a master of her craft. Most actors just repeat a few facial expressions and the movie does the work for them. For example, much as I enjoyed the Indiana Jones series, I thought Harrison Ford acted with one expression: varying degrees of constipation.

I'm not sure how I feel about her as a person, but she's a stellar actress, and uniquely beautiful. She's always been a class act, and has never used her sexuality in a raunchy way. It’s interesting that Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver, where classmates at Yale Drama School, at Yale Streep was the golden child, adored by her teachers/mentors, hailed by her peers. She stepped out of the hallowed halls of the Ivy League and right onto the stage at Lincoln Center, earning immediate praise from the New York theatre community and propelling her into an awarded acting career. Meanwhile, Sigourney Weaver toiled in the shadows. Unable to win lead roles in school productions (the Yale teachers called her "talentless") which had a huge affect on her confidence. After Yale, Weaver auditioned and auditioned in her native Manhattan, like most young performers taking whatever jobs she could get. It wasn't until Ridley Scott cast her in his inauspicious sci-fi horror film Alien that her career took off. Both women are individually talented and unique. Meryl always seemed to know that. While Sigourney had to grow in confidence to learn that fact.

I saw a behind the scenes about her a scene in KvsK with Dustin Hoffman. They were acting out the fight and Dustin said she was not connecting like he wanted and literally SLAPPED her. The director and everyone froze because it was so loud and left a red mark on her face. She acted beautifully even after that mess and everyone realized she was a hell of an actress to keep going after dealing with an jerk. That is why directors and producers love her.

My favorite Hollywood story is the fact that Meryl Streep walked around being called 'the goat' and she humbly accepted it and went along with it because she thought they were referring to her as an old goat because she's old. Jennifer Lawrence had to explain that it meant Greatest Of All Time. Even if I didn't like her, I can never hate someone who's that quirky 😂.

I had an ugly upbringing but love to hear about other people who had stable upbringings, had good educations etc just as much as I love to hear rags to riches stories and the like. It's cruel to criticise or take away from other people's success stories just because you had it harder or tougher. Once you remove envy and comparison from your life, life becomes way more enjoyable

Hi Karine, lovely breakdown as always! I’m not sure why I am feeling the need to express my opinions on Meryl Streep, because I consider no celebrity or human being “perfect” (we’re all flawed and have certain advantages and disadvantages in life), but there’s always so much talk about her career and whether she’s overrated or given everything on a silver platter due to her perfect upbringing; which is appealing to the industry and the audiences they deliver to. But here I am, speaking on a textbook privileged white woman with an “ideal” life story, career, and personal life - how basic (just kidding)! Before I start, let it be known that I believe that Meryl is crazy talented and a celebrity that I don’t have major concerns about when it comes to ethics - team strong and hardworking women here! I love that you included how she doesn’t have a favorite director, color, or food. She enjoys everything and I think that as a society we are so used to being able to box and categorize people in our minds. So the fact that everyone isn’t able to easily predict her patterns can cause confusion and bring forward the hate. The only thing we can confirm about her is that if she’s starring in something, she’ll likely be nominated for a big award. Public perception - and frankly male perceptions within the industry: I feel like she gets hate for not sticking to just serious/Oscar-worthy roles, or people think she’s stuck up for not doing more mainstream/cater to the masses types of projects - she does a good mix (The Devil Wears Prada & Mamma Mia, for example). It all comes back to the fact that she enjoys a little bit of everything and sees value in all types of opportunities professionally. She’s well-rounded and no one can take that away from her. As for her work ethic - no one should criticize a hard worker. We don’t know how much value the said person’s efforts and time bring to their inner peace and help to drive them. You mentioned the toll her workload and stress about about making it took on her, which just presents another reason as to why she is such a perfectionist and in love with her job. I think that she genuinely loves her craft and finds fulfillment in doing her absolute best - even her “worst” performances are noteworthy. As for her background…haters gonna hate. Sure, a backstory that involves some level of trauma and hardships is interesting to learn about, but I think that it is wonderful that her parents were supportive. They raised a hardworking child who used her advantages to the fullest potential, rather than taking it easy. Not every performer or creator needs to be a “tortured artist” or a “broken soul” - how would the industry function with that much collective trauma? A stable upbringing and life path is uncommon in the industry - refreshing really. Any group and background should be present in any and all industries. She obviously hasn’t needed sad or bad memories to tap into her inner actress, as you mentioned that acting always came naturally to her - but I respect the efforts she put into perfecting the hell out of her passion (which she’s still doing in my opinion). Regarding Sharon Stone’s comment about her appearance, I also agree that it isn’t necessarily an insult. I do feel that Meryl gives off a relatable energy - both mentally and physically. It aids in how her performances impact an audience. They may see themselves represented and that is a beautiful thing - another added layer to her art. Also, I think that she is beautiful and love the approach she has taken to aging gracefully. She just looks like a happy, content, and confident version of her younger self. I will assume that other actresses get jealous and hurt by many roles being offered to her first, but Meryl must be respectful and kind to her peers, which adds to why they go to her earlier than others. All these legends/veterans of the industry are talented, but talent alone doesn’t guarantee the first offer for a role - at least that’s what I think. The package as a whole comes off as ideal for any producer/director. All these amazing actresses deserve all the accolades and equal pay to their male counterparts - I respect that Meryl stood up to getting paid the right amount for her role as Miranda Priestly, as you mentioned in the video. She has paved the way for other actresses. Meryl is the first actress that I saw as the real deal growing up, but I get the same energy from Viola Davis, for example. She is also someone who is mega talented, she voices her love for her craft, and stands up for what’s right - such as being treated as equals to men and other women in the industry and being confident in knowing your worth. Both powerhouses, both coming from completely different backgrounds, and both are two of the strongest performers I have ever witnessed. I hope the two actresses are able to work together again, because that would be a treat! Lastly, I appreciate that she isn’t extra. She’s not trying to break the Internet. She isn’t doing the most on the red carpet. When she’s at an awards show, she is genuinely happy to be present and actually paying attention, with her glasses on. Sure, she’s one of the most successful actors in the industry, but it is refreshing to not always be bombarded by drama, cancel culture, scandals, etc. from her end. She has made smart decisions both professionally and personally - yes, her and her husband are definitely couple goals! She is a true Thespian, a hardworking woman, a loving wife and mother, and the ideal actor to look up to for any aspiring artist, due to how she balances everything and still enjoys her chosen career. Meryl Streep is the GOAT and the Michael Jordan of actresses in Hollywood. P.S. Meryl’s career > Dustin’s ! ! ! I hate men sometimes…most of the time…

Sharon stone really shaded Meryl in an interview last year. she said “I like the way you phrase that, that I finally got to work with Meryl Streep,” Stone said. “You didn’t say, ‘Meryl finally got to work with Sharon Stone.’ Or we finally got to work together…Because that’s the way her life went, she got built up to be, ‘Everyone wants to work with Meryl.’ I wonder if she likes that?” “The way you structured the question is very much the answer to the question. The business was set up that we should all envy and admire Meryl because only Meryl got to be the good one. And everyone should compete against Meryl. I think Meryl is an amazingly wonderful woman and actress. But in my opinion, quite frankly, there are other actresses equally as talented as Meryl Streep. The whole Meryl Streep iconography is part of what Hollywood does to women.” “Viola Davis is every bit the actress Meryl Streep is. Emma Thompson. Judy Davis. Olivia Colman. Kate Winslet, for fuck’s sake. But you say Meryl and everybody falls on the floor,” Stone added. “I’m a much better villain than Meryl, and I’m sure she’d say so. Meryl was not gonna be good in ‘Basic Instinct’ or in ‘Casino.’ I would be better. And I know it. And she knows it. there is some truth but also some jealousy in her statements.

My family found this out when my uncle visited Ireland after an ancestory search (we're Scottish of Irish decent) and met distant relatives. Meryl had previously done her own search and met her those same distant cousins in Ireland. I was elated to find this out. When I told my husband he shrugged and said ' So that's where all the drama comes from!' LOL I don't normally tell folk as they enevitably don't belive it.
