The Mesa Boogie Rectifier is a rock icon. But dual & triple Recto's do have some problems like the channel 'POP' and floor pedal switch faults.
What you will learn:
How good are Mesa Boogie channel switches?
Is the switch available?
Was this amplifier modified before?
So is a pop always there?
Were there any other problems found?
Will you be able to fix this?
Do I need to be qualified for this work?
This triple rectifier amplifier was bought off Reverb. I have refurbished many faults already. Here I show problems with this amp like channel popping and faulty floor pedal switching that I am working to resolve. Scarily, this amp was sold as 'perfect'.
If you have seen this floor pedal problem before do come and tell me what you found... I'm all ears :)
I do have a 'fix' for the channel popping on rectifier amps to revision G which I will be showing in a forthcoming video and where to buy the mod from - so be sure to subscribe and click that bell so you're notified about that and other reviews, repairs and the like.
I show typical problems while carrying out the refurbishment of the recto in general and this is part of an ongoing series - do check the videos out as they show lots of different things about Mesa Amplifiers.
Thanks to anyone that does come back with any advice on this specific problem of the floor pedal channel switching issue - it is appreciated.
All parts were bought by me personally - an ordinary user of this amplifier and I was not given anything - it's a totally genuine review of what I bought and did to improve the amp. As an ordinary user my experience with any buying is exactly what yours might be.
If you are not a qualified engineer that has experience of working on tube or valve amps with up to 500 volts inside then do NOT attempt these repairs or modifications as there are very high voltages inside all valve and tube amplifiers, but you are more than welcome to watch what I did with my amplifier.

That's a very good point in fact and thanks for that Pete. This amp was actually originally a 120v amp and I bought a replacement PT from Mesa Boogie via their dealer network in the UK. The point was, that the original triple rectifier PT was obsolete. They supplied the multi-watt version which is (they say) fully compatible. So I fitted that. Notice I had a foot switch issue too when on spongy mode... which drops voltages. In the bold mode it was fine (but the pops remained). I wired this amp for 240v operation irrespective of the previous wiring. However I also noticed that in general the bold voltage was 280v in the amp and the spongy voltage was as I remember a low 200v. As I dug deeper I saw that even in the bold mode the 3v was actually 2.8v and the 15v was actually 14.2v or so. Which leads me ultimately to guess that if I flip this amp to 230v primary in then likely the volts will be where they should. I have to say that I did not check the rail volts (unless its one of the ones I mentioned) so can't be sure about that, but I will. And if my theory fixes this amp (with the 230v setting and 240v in) then I'll show this in another video. Doing the math from what I see will still keep the amp well in where it needs to be re operating voltages and things like MOV etc. Thanks for this Pete and stay safe...

About the 5 or 7-pin cables, I had a foot switch with my Dual Rec that went bad; but I had used it with a 5-pin cable for a long time. When I replaced it, it STILL didn't work, but it acted different. I got a 7-pin cable, and it started working fine, if slightly different than originally (I hear the relays click when I turn it on in a way that I never used to when turning on with the old footswitch). It appears the newer footswitches require it, whereas the older ones don't.

I was just having an issue where my Dual Rectifier was making a weird loud noise when I turned it on and thanks to this, I realized, it was the footpedal that was causing this issue. It had a 5 pin din cable instead of a 7, ordered a new cable and hoping that will fix the problem.

ANY Rectifier can be a pain with the pedal... and inside also re there is a control chip usually LH back of main board... it will vary on your layout. I showed old and newer layout in the multi-watt video review I did. The cable 'might' solve it of course and I got caught out too. But my issues are/were other reasons also. Hope it helps and let me know what happens... thanks for watching.

I have always been a fan of Mesa Boogies but I have only owned the single Rec myself. But I’ve had two of my buddies complain about the popping issue and god rid of there amps I’ve been a big Laney fan for years that’s why I own 2 of them they are single channel gh100l and gh50l but I’ve been looking at the new triple Rec . But I’m not sure yet the popping issue might be a deal breaker loved the video Tony strat safe

@tonymckenziecom 3 жыл бұрын
Ha me too... but until they made a MK III I could not afford them here... they cost a fortune then and still do now. Personally I don't think the popping is a 'get rid of' the amp level. But it can be frustrating. I always love amplifiers that just work - and for the most part Mesa Boogie always have for me. But I have owned Laney too. Did you see the review I completed on the Tony Iommi Amp from Laney? Here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l7eYn7yIqL7DgYU.html and man that amp was wicked! I also made on for the little IRT Studio which was a nice little unit here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZqcqcZ7npe5j2g.html admittedly this one was made down to a price, but it performed very well. On the Triple Rec do you mean the Badlander or the 'real' Triple Rectifier? I just bought a one month old Dual Rectifier (multi-watt) and basically opted against the Badlander because of the 'additions' they have added to that amp. I have used a PT-15 from Suhr with all that stuff in there and to be honest that's not for me - it gets in the way of the amp overall I think and it could contribute to higher failure rates because there is more inside the amp. What's the point of all of that stuff like IR's and Load box in the amp... most tube guys have their favourite speaker cab but some will disagree with me of course, but I really did feel that the newest Multi-watt Rectifiers are honed over 30+ years are hard to beat. BTW I believe the Multi-watt amps do not pop! Thanks for watching this stuff... next video shows the pop fix and the solution to the pedal issue all in one - easy enough too. Stay safe too.

Hey Tony, hi! I was wondering if I could share some issue with my mesa DC 3. I would really appreciate some advises/suggestions if you could. I owned a Mesa Boogie Dual Daliber 30W (dc-3) version B (which instead of having the FTSW EQ/REV in the back has the headphones spot). I have noticed that I am still getting sound after turning the speaker mute switch on ( to be able to use headphones when I can not make too much noise). I checked for an authorized MESA gear for a service but it's quiet far from my place and I do not own a car, so before "embarking on a such journey" I was wondering if you could help me to find out what it could be the issue. Thanks in advise for your support

I was on vacation... But not sure if I can help... so the speaker mute is under the chassis... I assume a knob (or is it a switch) I guess a knob. If you have a V6 tube... (I could have the wrong schematic but V6a seemed to be there in the circuit for speaker mute. Just swap that out first to see if the volume thing changes - seems to have speaker mute associated. If not then I really would put a tech on it... hope it helps (might not)... and thanks for watching.

I have the same issue with my Mesa Boogie Mark v popping. This is the second Mesa head I've owned that popped. I noticed that the popping was louder when the channels were at a different wattage. As far as the clicking sound goes, I've also had that same issue with a Mark V. It turned out to be the relays going bad. Mesa told me it could be the cable, or the pedal but after I had it looked at, it was definitely the relays. The problem came and went but the popping was always present. I ended up returning the amp for a new one.

It sounds to me like the relays are losing power every 1/2 line cycle (100Hz or 10ms). The voltage at the output of the +/- 3V bridge rectifier could be a little low. One of the switching ICs could also be losing power every 10ms. i'd try: 1. Run it in "bold" mode. This should boost the voltage on the 3Vac tap and maybe fix it. Unless you're already in bold mode... 2. Measure the +/- 3V supply voltage. Is it low? How much does it change when you click on solo/FX? If this is the issue you could try replacing the 4007 diodes with schottky diodes with a lower forward drop (probably a lot of work, not recommended unless you have to). 3. Measure +2V supply. Is it low? The +2V supply comes from a zener + bias resistor. The schematic says 39 ohm for the resistor, but later this was decreased to 22 ohm, presumably to give more current. You could try replacing the 39 ohm with a 22 ohm if it hasn't been done already.

Hi T&S good to hear you. The amp IS in 'spongy' mode and I'll try that flip to bold later today - seems two guys now have said that... which in itself is interesting. You will know far more than I ever will :). I noticed when I checked the voltages out from pin 3 that they were lower than I expected, 2.1v, then 2.0v then 1.8v I think or somewhere there. I have been out to the amp and flipped it to the 'bold' mode... solved that pedal problem immediately :). I also saw that on the relay nearest channel 3 light that there was a mod carried out where two diodes were fitted. I'll check the 22 ohm resistor and I'll do that if it was not done. That will be on the next video where I fit the anti 'pop' board. Really great info and thanks for that - much appreciated. I'll do the mod over this week and post next week... stay safe.

I went back and took a look at that resistor. My resistor is at 22 Ohms. The voltages across that resistor are firstly on Bold @ 2.71 and 1.76 the other side. For Spongy @ 2.19 and 1.35 volts. I might as well just give up on the spongy at this stage and get on with fitting the board for the 'pop' solving I reckon.

There is a fix for the POP as you will see later. But I have to fix the switching first. Hello. I just ordered a 2001 series 2 single rectifier. It was listed in "excellent" condition. Hopefully that's the case. The seller says it's mainly been in a hard case for over 10 years. Again, assuming that's the truth how long will a boogie recto head last? I'm assuming they're well built and all. I feel a little nervous paying such a price for a 21 year old amp. Hopefully my concerns are nullified

Well done. Mesa heads are long term as are most amps. However, over the years the most problematic items are the capacitors as they can leak and drift etc. The tubes are probably fine unless there is white inside the tube (like a smoked glass window). If the amp has stood for years, it might be worth getting checked if you're not sure about it all. Other than that, I have had Mesa amps for years and generally seem (for me) reliable although some might disagree. You'll be fine, I'm sure. Don't judge the amp by no scratches on the outside etc. its inside that matters for sure. In any case let me know how you go on with it all and thanks for the post.

Tony, I have the same amp from approximately the same year. I notice mine will sometimes get stuck between channels 2 and 3 making the same buzzing sound. But it only does this if I have it in the spongy setting on the back of the amp.. If it is doing this, switching it up to bold immediately solves the issue. I had spoken to mesa in the past about this and was able to pry a bit of information from them. I believe it has something to do with the voltage that feeds the switching transistors. I guess on the spongy setting the voltage is close to the lowest voltage those transistors can operate at and if mains power is a bit too low for some reason the switching gets all funky... I dunno.. Hope this helps... I've never actually fixed the issue other than bringing it up to the bold setting...

Now then... this IS a very good point and one I have not tried. I DID check the voltage and it was low at the time... and most importantly if you watch my earlier video of where I swap the power transformer for the 240v one... I comment on the bold mode actually banging out what is really over voltage to lots of stuff (up to 280 volts I measured for 240 amp). Scarily I have the amp in spongy mode... I'll try this later and report back... even if it was not that - what a great point and I can confirm for sure that the spongy mode really does lose lots of volts. Do you really have 240Vac main ? sounds like the DC supply voltage for the relay controls might be too low or borderline. Relay coils will sometimes oscillate when the DC voltage to activate them is below the specification voltage. Try it separately with a DC supply on a 5Vdc relay and gradually lower the voltage and at a certain critical low voltage it will start to oscillate.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 4 ай бұрын
Well 230/240 but it does make 240. I agree that the voltage is dropped 'too much' in the spongy mode and the relays are chattering. In the regular bold mode it works fine. I could dig a little and maybe increase the voltage level a tad to stop that in the spongy mode, but to be honest and after lots of work it makes no difference really to me because personally I just use bold only. I also did fit a MIDI board that solves everything, the clicks, in both modes etc. and fitted that in less than 1 hour. Here : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d86Kecmoyp-UiWw.html it works wonders :) BTW I think that spongy volts for the relays was about 3v (but it was a while back). I had fitted a new PT (same as from the MultiWatt because the original was obsolete Mesa said at the time... but they did say it was 'the same' and would be fine. The spongy... is too spongy for its own good :). Thanks for the info and for watching.

Yes but hard to solve. I believe its the relays switching rapidly because of lack of voltage in the SPONGY mode. Seems to me that the voltage is dropped and dropped a little too far... who knows why, it could be anything. On this amp the PT was changed for the newer version (off the multiwatt) - Mesa said it would be 'OK' but to be honest I question it since this issue. Check those voltages to the relays... and note that on mine in the higher non spongy mode there is no clicking of the relays... hope it helps and if you are not sure about amps don't go in there as it can kill you! There are chips in the foot switch that could fail - on a MK IV I did have those issues but also a chip (socketed in the MK IV amp) inside the amp that had failed... but that was a completely different error. Its hard to say really - many things could be causing it. Take a look at that chip I show on the left top of the pcb (depends on version) as that controls (if I remember correctly) by voltage variance. But don't touch any of it if you are not capable and can do it.

I've use boogies for years, they need the 7 pin cable.

And some need the 8 pin too! I have used the 7 pin also in this video and whichever neither solves it :( at one stage I thought I had this solved... but we'll get there. Great point - and thanks for posting that... it could help Mesa users anytime... and stay safe.

Hi Tony , maybe it's that old weasel that you had, they go pop. Best regards. John. Sounds like bad caps some where in the amp or in the foot switch.

Ha he's in the cupboard right now - no doubt he will be back at some time or other. Well there are enough capacitors to go at :) I have checked what I can and they are OK from the results I saw, but I'll bear that in mind as I continue to the next video on this... thanks for the info... it all matters and thanks for watching. Stay safe.

I've got a vintage Marantz receiver that has the same POP problem when you press the OFF switch. My solution, I take the speakers off before shutting down. One problem with my solution, it does not apply to the Mesa Boogie, an amp the Guitologist hate working on.

The footswitch problem looks like the switches go open circuit, I would try known good switches bypassing the footswitches, from a batch of faulty ones that may cause the problem.

I have watched Guitologist stuff many times... I like how he does the amps... I tend not to watch the rest though.. but I like him... and there are many others I watch of similar vein - I always learn from them. On the swap the pedal etc. I have also that in mind among other stuff - no doubt for the next video. Stay safe.

@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 3 жыл бұрын
Well I have a Kemper too :). But... as that is 'getting on' somewhat bearing in mind it's a computer really, I'm a little wary about it being obsolete any time soon. I have had one since Jan 2012 and in that sector that's a lifetime. The Kemper I like and as a choice it's a pretty good one I think, but I did also buy the Helix rack to replace my very old rack gear. But if I was to choose a tube amp or ANY simulator, I prefer the tube amp... it just sounds and feels better to me. But they are all improving at a rate... I reviewed a GE300 the other week and that (for the money) was pretty good - software was basic though... but sometimes that could be an advantage. Thanks for watching and stay safe.

Try testing the caps powering the relays 12 volt. Test them with on lead disconnected. John.

Channel pop is par for the course on rectifier amps... but I have a video coming up that solves it... I did fit a board that tried hard to get it perfect, but Alex the designer has made a MIDI board, and I'll be fitting that board on camera and removing the old board... Alex claims that there is ZERO pop with any channels AND that the switching will work whether spongy or bold settings. Watch for the video...

Have you tried a different foot switch to see if the problem persists, maybe a fault on the foot switch pcb. Could be arcing under the switch or even inside the switch.Try removing the two offending switches and resoldering them.🕊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿❤️ p.s. stay safe around that open amp when it’s turned on. Wifey wouldn’t like it if all of a sudden you had hair like Einstein’s lol.

Hey great to see you :) and trust you're OK. I have this issue of the footswitch resolved (well currently as far as it can be... I won't disclose this here - but honestly you won't believe the real reason it happens! The foot switch is perfect... is one clue. I'm OK on the amp - I have been inside them for some time now. Weirdly, this one when you turn off, remove the power and flip on the standby (put it on) the current in the amp is dissipated in literally seconds. Somehow that is a useful thing for the working on this amp which is still far more than this video - but it seems all very good stuff on the final part up to now. There's one last thing to solve and we're working on that issue currently and then the video will be here. Stay safe and thanks for watching.

The problems in the name, Messa Boogie. My son has a MB don't know model but it's like your frying bacon. Why would you want big amps Tony for in the house. ? Wouldn't by a Messa Boogie, you can't rectifier it.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 3 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey :) now come on... BTW my amps are NOT used 'in the house' as you put it. The fact is, that when you 'open up' a big amp then things are different. Ever opened up a plexi to 100? maybe not... but I have and like most 100w amps they feel and sound very different than you might think especially without the now common reactive load boxes. And let's face it, you ain't doing that at a gig with no load box... at least the gigs around here because the spotty dog safety boys would be on you in seconds. I think though, irrespective of what you or I think about Mesa Boogie Rectifier amps their record speaks for itself - probably on more hit records than you can shake a stick at - and that's all that matters... Of course there is the beckoning alternative... a simulator... oops sorry I broke out in to laughter after I said that... and thankfully its a joke... not the Recto... but the simulator. :) Now laugh.... and stay safe.
