Saw Meshuggah in New Orleans early this Summer. After the show I ran into a guy at a Pinkberry right outside the venue. It was both his first Meshuggah concert and his first time listening to Meshuggah (lucky bastard). He looked like he had experienced some deep spiritual and emotional rearrangement. I asked how he liked the show. He said, "I've just never experienced anything like this...this was my first time listening to Meshuggah. It was like....a grenade went off every 5 minutes. Oh my god....im not sure what I was feeling...they are amazing." Me and the guy next in line just laughed and welcomed him to the Meshuggah experience. Incredible human beings, those guys from Meshuggah.

Think Meshuggah is one of the fewest bands around that can claim the best known part of it is the skills of the drummer. Not that the rest are bad, but the drumming is just somewhere else.

The secret to Meshuggah is that there is one constant 4/4 type of backbeat going on with the drums most of the time. either a hi-hat or snare or cymbal. Listen, and you'll find that thing and just nod your head to it. All the crazy madness that may be going on around it, that's your center. And it's fantastic. New album is pretty good. The last album, Koloss, is okay. High points are "Do Not Look Down" and "Demiurge" in my opinion. 2 albums ago, Obzen, is my fav from top to bottom. So fucking good.
@onewaydown

OH, and some interesting trivia in case you haven't heard before. Tomas Haake, drummer for Meshuggah, helped develop the Drumkit from Hell software by Toontrack. DFH and the latter Superior Drummer are used in so much popular music and metal for drum samples and programming. Meshuggah is also attributed to be the founders of the 8-string staccato "djent" music style used by everyone now a days like Periphery, Animals as Leaders, After the Burial, Born of Osiris, etc.

@onewaydown
@onewaydown 7 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, I'm a fan of most remasters. Some are better than others (Death - Human, for example). Being a drummer, I think those sound better in the remaster but the guitar tone not so much.
@Mogemann
@Mogemann 7 жыл бұрын
I feel the guitars sound more dirty on the original, so I feel they fit the original album. Yet the overall sound and production on the remaster is better IMO, so I feel that trumps the guitar tone.

I genuinely can't get over how masterfully Meshuggah crafts their songs to make those parts really BANG. The entire song leading up to that point is pure tension-building; giving that pulse of 4 but it not *feeling* right with little hints of release that don't satiate. Then the introduction of that riff with the drum and atmospheric build-up, finally with that massive break and then it DROPS. FUCK! So perfect!

If you're into the rhythmic variations, pay attention to the vocal rhythm. The melody of the vocals really doesn't change much, but the vox usually play a part over the top of everything else, like the 4:3 polyrhythm of the vox in Bleed on top of the hertas

"That fucking off-time shit is CRAZY" - Literally the best overall description of Meshuggah I've ever heard.

It'a really cool to watch someone check into the deeper reaches of music with an open mind and see what they think. A band I'd recommend to check out is a group called Astronoid, they mix the instrumentation of black metal/death metal with shogaze/dream pop vocals and a brighter sound overall. Very cool stuff, may be a good band to look into if you want some great musicianship but a more melodic vocals. For a song, i'd say check out Up and Atom, it's off their most recent album.

You got it bang on. If you get into Meshuggah, their music puts you into an weird trance with all the kaos of the off beats.

Bleed is undoubtedly their most popular track and it is worth a reaction!

They go real hard, I was never really a fan of stuff like this but Meshuggah is an exception. Their songs are so chaotic and aggressive that it's like they're just beating them into your head.

_"This fuckin' off-time shit is CRAZY!" "I've never heard anything like this!"_ Has has has been exposed in the odd-ness of the 'shuggah. He is changed now and will never be the same. Soon he will be one of us. Rejoice.

i'm not much of a metal head myself, but i got a crush on Meshuggah since their "Cyanid New Millenium Christ" videoclip. the music is awesome and the clip is so cheap and so funny! Clockworks sounds for me as a classic symphony (i mean a contemporary symphony, maybe Stravinsky-like...). and the videoclip with those fractal figures really reflects the sound and their mental universes.

You need something relaxing like Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Give Them Motion or Demiurge by Meshuggah. Or New Millenium Cyanide Christ. Definitely New Millenium.
