"It's not their intention." Dead on. This band expects you to come to them, 100%. They create something so unique that they have zero interest in diluting it. It's either for you, or it's not. And here's the thing: they've got a high level career. The crowd is there. And frankly doesn't care whether the rest of the world comes along.

Damn boys, I've been requesting Rational Gaze for a while, but I actually like that you did Demiurge now, because I really feel that you will like Rational Gaze more than Demiurge. Give it a try lads :D and keep up the amazing work! Edit: The last two minutes of this video, you genuinely were having a typical metalhead discussion regarding musicality and the highlighting, in your own way, the differences between two songs from the same band regarding the musical aspect and the technical aspect of it they not always overlap and furthermore the likableness of both of these songs varies a lot when you are dissecting the groove or dissecting the technical aspecs of it. Again, kudos to you both!

Kudos to you guys man, I think its REALLY cool that you revisited Bleed, let alone on camera for us too! I totally get what you mean. Meshuggah were one of the real innovators when it comes to a "different" kind of groove, with the low tuned guitars, and syncopating polyrhythms and things. I think what's awesome is how they have a song like "Bleed", which is just raw, feral, absurd speed, pounding your head in with its sheer technical wizardry, and a then a song like "Demiurge", which is slow, groovy and almost restrained at times. That riff that comes in with the open sustained note still makes me lose my shit every time I hear it. Hearing you listen to both and hear that contrast was awesome. You guys are still the absolute best when it comes to this kinda stuff! So kudos. Off topic, any chance you're ever going to visit some other genres, like say Trip-Hop? Would love hearing you guys talk about some Massive Attack or Portishead!

From any band that's metal in origin they should always recommend the groovier songs. If you notice, those songs tend to be better reviewed on this channel. If you come from listening to a hip hop/r&b then groovier tracks with easier or more melodic transitions just seem to sound better even if you don't necessarily like the song.

As a big fan of Meshuggah this track is one that you check out after you’ve listened to some of the rest of their discography. After you check out the rest of their stuff, this song is a masterpiece. It might sound simple but it’s on purpose there are very tight technical things happening and you can still bang in Straight 4 and that’s what makes Meshuggah. Listen to Obzen, Dancers to a discordant system, Nostrum, Phantoms, Straws Pulled at Random. They’ll grow on you it’s all rhythms man.

Ryan, I vehemently disagree that artists like Meshuggah should try to have a universal appeal. To do so would be to dilute one's artform and force oneself to be dependent on popular sentiment regarding taste for one's career. In effect you want Meshuggah to do what pop stars to--conform, and produce large amounts of vapid content that appeal to the lowest common denominators of taste. It's a little bit like wanting Michelangelo to paint nothing but corporate billboards.

@Lost in Vegas - I'm going to get to what you guys are getting at, but don't have the words for. Meshuggah does their own thing, and unless you know what it is, you can't describe it. They like to play with different time signatures, polyrythms, and patterns. Because it is not the norm, there is not necessarily a "groove" to latch on to. A lot of what they do is predicated on unpredictability. There is a reason that their stuff has been the subject of some universities for their use of music theory, and it's mainly to do with timing and how things line up at certain places. What they do is hard... you can't play this shit drunk. They are not my favorite band, but I went to one of their concerts. Seeing them pull it off live is f**king amazing. I think through your journey, you've subconsciously picked up on some of that. Love watching you guys.
@matternicuss
@matternicuss 5 жыл бұрын
"They like to play with different time signatures" Nope. All of their songs are in 4/4, but the key is that they're syncopated, meaning you're hearing polyrhythms that interrupt the flow of the beats, causing disorientation among listeners. Meshuggah simply takes it waaaay farther than most. Listen to Haake, the drummer. His hands typically land on the 4, while his feet are busy providing those insane polyrhythms.

The way I learned it through reading and listening to interviews of the band since 1995 when I got into them (Destroy Erase Improve); they do mostly play in 4/4, but in those particular sigs, its what they do _WITHIN that_ "4/4" is what makes them so awesomely strange and mathematical. Each member, including Jens the vocalist, take turns being a percussive instrument. And Haake at times is the "Lead" on drums! More info and other bands of the like I've written about in these 2 essays (with links and citations) that I hope you guys will enjoy . . . 1. You should try giving Rammstein a listen even though you don't speak German (their lyrics might be a little basic but in several of their songs they are a comment on society). The German language just lends itself so well to metal. As starter songs I would go for: Ich Tu dir we, Sonne, Mann gegen mann or Keine lust. Keep up doing a great job on your journey through the Metal-verse.

I feel you guys, esp when Ryan was like 'I almost feel the groove', and George was like 'it almost builds you up' You guys keep skirting around melodic death metal that's ACCESSIBLE to a new listener... ya'll just keep diving headfirst in lol! And you do the same with power metal as well, which, I gotta give you props for, on both! You were almost there on this one, and I can tell you appreciated them. But nothing wrong with easing yourself into the genre, so you can understand it a little better. I STILL recommend you revisit Amon Amarth for melodic death metal. You reviewed an early, shit song and you NEED to revisit them. They honestly bridge the gap between mainstream metal and melodic death metal. Try 'Live for the Kill' as it has Apocalyptica behind them on orchestra and a very clear, yet elegant melody progression. But anything off Twilight of the Thundergod and more recent would probably suffice.

Yeeeeeah Bleed is one of those that really grows on you; after a few listens it's really hard to not enjoy some of those grooves. I agree with the point that to reach that elusive status of "truly great" a band needs to be able to extend its appeal beyond the boundaries of fans within their genre; there are plenty of bands that are fully aware that what they're doing isn't going to have that extended appeal. Nothing wrong with it, it's a super rare thing for a band to stumble across that trait unintentionally and capitalize without compromising their original style. I'd recommend you guys check out Monuments. Bunch of songs would be good choices; Atlas is probably the best bet though.

Meshuggah don't need to try to appeal to people outside their genre as they have enough fan base world wide. In flames are a good example who changed their style to fit into a sound with different taste and they ended up losing all their original fan base and gained new fans instead and are probably only just as popular if not less.

The irony is In Flames could have been bigger than ever if they didn't change their style/sound. I think the same could be said about Meshuggah. If they keep it going and stick to who they are I think they have a lot of room to grow an extremely large fan base, and will definitely go down as one of the greatest metal bands of all time. And hell, nowadays they are main-staging just a few notches down from bands like Slipknot, Korn, Metallica, System Of A Down, etc, so sky is the limit imo. As the world population grows, so will the amount of metalheads. Think of the possibilities 20, 30, 50, 100 years from now.
