I am 67 going on 68. I witnessed, first hand, the birth and development of "heavy" music. From 1965 on. I saw Cream in 1967, Yardbirds 1967, Vanilla Fudge 1967, The Who in 1967, Jeff Beck 1968, Zeppelin 4x in 1969, Hendrix 5 times, Spirit 2x 1969, Mountain in 1969 and 1970, was at Woodstock, saw Naplam Death, Extreme Noise Terror, Butthole Surfers, Magma. etc. etc. Take it from me, one of The Elders. Meshuggah is the Absolute Best Heavy Band of All Time. Peace.

Every metalhead should experience Meshuggah once in their lifetime. After that, there is no escape from their captivating musicianship. Also, in my opinion, they are the heaviest band that exist nowadays and have unique style that is a genre on its own. There aren’t bands that can exceed or even come close to what they are creating. I admire their talent and the ability to compose such unique sounds and arrangements.

Holy hell when I saw meshuggah on their most recent tour I reverted to my most primal state once they dropped into this song. What a masterpiece. I feel that true metal should sound like it would be able to be played for cavemen thousands of years ago and for aliens thousands of years in the future and they should both appreciate it, Meshuggah is that band that both a Neanderthal and advance alien species would both enjoy.

Koloss wasn't quite as well recieved by all fans as their previous albums but it has really grown on me and I definitely think it is at least as good as Nothing and Obzen. I fucking love the more organic and melodic sound as this track is a great example of and the grooves on this album are some of the best they've ever done.

I think Koloss had it rough trying to follow up Obzen, which most view as their peak album. I mean, Bleed, Combustion and Dancers on the same album? Just...fuck... But I always liked Koloss and have listened to it thousands of times, this being my favorite song on the album along with Swarm. Honestly, I like all of their albums about the same, except for Violet Sleep, which was a real record scratch moment for me. The only two I appreciate on that one are Born in Dissonance and Clockworks.

"To what lengths would you go to reach your goals? What mantra will you use to justify your means? Who will you betray to secure you dreams? What sins will you commit to avoid your sins be seen?" Fucking savage. This is the way the most powerful and successful people live their lives. Do you think they regret it? Remember, whether the ends justify the means or not is entirely subjective. If you know what your purpose in life is, do whatever it takes to be fulfilled. And remember Do NOT LOOK DOWN.

I’m surprised no one here is talking about how TOOL had Meshuggah open for them for 11 shows back in 2002 for the Lateralus tour. It was soo epic you have no idea, I drove 182miles out of the way to go see that, to witness Meshuggah Open with ELASTIC, last song off of chaosphere, only time I’ve ever seen that song live, I was a bit let down that Thordendal let his sound guy play the solo in SOULBURN, smh arghhh but then I got to see haake jam with Danny Carey on the last song of the night, the last track on Lateralus, reflection or something, I never cared for those three tracks that come after Lateralus, weird placement for songs on an epic album. Danny Carey Announced on a webcast (this is before podcasts lol) that he had been listening to an awesome band that he thought everyone should check out, I thought to myself, how rediculous would that be if he said Meshuggah, but there’s no way, mesh is way too heavy, i lost it when I heard him say Meshuggah. I was in the nose bleed section watching a bunch of jaded semi goth morons not give a shit about Meshuggah but it didn’t matter, I knew I was witnessing greatness in the presence of greatness. I still have the ticket stub, my most coveted ticket stub besides my stubs signed by Allan Holdsworth. A few years later, I saw Meshuggah at the smallest venue you can imagine for their Catch33 tour, the venue was called “(The Pound)SF” and i met them and talked to hagstrom for over an hour over endless bowls of chronic nugs and got to ask them about them opening for TOOL and I said “yea man, you guys opened with Elastic” and Hagstrom replies “what!? Why did we do that?” Lolol soo epic

@ACardFan 10 жыл бұрын
WillHerndon Actually, time signatures only have to do with notation, therefore this song could be in whatever time signature they feel is most efficient to tab out. What is objectively true here is that they were using syncopation, which, yes, some of the crowed did awkwardly headbang to.

WillHerndon This is not in 4/4. Count 4/4 evenly in this song. maybe 16/16 because you have to count ridiculously fast to make an even time signature to fit in.
@xMaverickFPS
@xMaverickFPS 10 жыл бұрын
WillHerndon is "retarded" a technical term in music?? in my 13 years of playing guitar i never realized that... you could write any song in any time sig. it just might not come out evenly at the end. you could write a 5/4 song with 4/4 meters. just make sure the number of meters is equal to 4x5 or 20/40/60/80/etc... this song is definitely not in 4/4 unless youre counting each possible subdivision.. chances are that the beat is actually very slow, and people are actually headbanging with the eighth notes or sixteenth notes, not quarter notes.. so in reality, it might be 4/8 or 4/16, which when you build an uneven number of those meters, comes out to strange time sigs... 3 meters of 4/8 will be 12/8, or 6/4... 5 meters of 4/8 will be 20/8, or 10/4... and there is a time sig of 7/8 that is actually quite common. ever hear Pink Floyd's "Money"? its in 7/8... 2 meters of 7/8 would be 14/8, or 7/4... 3 meters of 7/8 would be 21/8, which doesnt have a */4 equivalent unless you count 10.5/4 which is pretty dumb.. 5 meters of 7/8 would be 35/8.. should i keep going?? lol its not "retarded," its simple math...

Their live sound is immaculate and the light show is unbelievable. Completely and totally in synch with the music. In fact, the light show really *helps* one to understand what's going on. Otherwise, one could get lost in a sea of rhythmic confusion. Also Jen really helps as well. Never misses a queue and moves to the groove without being annoying.

When I was in radio in the early 90s and got a promo copy of Destroy Erase Improve, I just wasn't ready. Fast forward a few years...Chaosphere, Catch 33... I finally "got it." This is my Jazz... my thinking music when I work and when I just want to get lost in sound. I just cannot get enough Meshuggah. Absolute, hands down genius \m/

The 'metal' tag is kind of unfortunate because they have some of the most amazing musical rhythms and grooves ever created. If you listen to the riff and groove starting at 3:00, it's truly amazing. The feel just sends chills down my spin every time I listen to it...in a very good way. That melodic riff in the middle of this heavy tune with Jen's vocal, that type off riff can be found everywhere in their music. It's the genius of Meshuggah. What I wouldn't give to sit for an hour with them and talk rhythms. :) Yo!

***** Totally true man, although I find 2:36 to be by far one of the best grooves in the song.

***** Metal != ungroovyness as long as you specify the type of metal. :) Call it, progressive metal or whatever. Personal favourite name would be extreme groove metal

Robert Fennis The whole tune is cool, all of the riffs are awesome. I just really dig the 13/8 change from the 17/16 section. :) Yo!

***** You are right, that riff and groove at 3:00 reminds me of a heavier King Crimson riff- intricate, complex, mesmerizing, beautiful! They have said that they are not interested in speed although they can all play fast. Derek Roddy said he is just bored with speed, groove and riffs are everything. I love this band, and Tomas Haake is a humble drumming hero. They are rhythmic magicians, and it just grooves like crazy.

Blows my mind that the entire groove is in 4/4 with the snare on 2 and 4 but the kick and riffs just mess with it all. GENIUS! As a guitar player... it’s not recommended to air drum this track while driving... 😂. You’ll pass some stops and lights 😂🙈🙈

@@xXRunDeathXx 17/16 is the guest time signature, think of it as a polymeter. Yes, this song is in 4/4, but what is on top of it is like a polyrythm.
