"I don't see myself as a technical drummer." When Haake says that about himself, there is no hope of ever BEING a technical drummer. Haake is amazing.

But he isn't technical, at least compared to the kind of music he plays. His drumming is hard as fuck, yes, but all he does is keep the tempo for the rest of the band. Breaking down his drumming mostly just reveals kick drums following the guitars, cymbals to keep a counterpoint, and snare to keep time. It's a rhythmic clusterfuck, and thank god he doesn't go super technical bananas on the drumming.

+eliten0Ob In this kind of music, simplicity is key. That's what makes it groove. Granted, Meshuggah grooves are often more like twisting convulsions, but the point is your body can still pick up on them. That just doesn't happen in most technical or pure art music. Jazz, classical, pop, rock... the simple, groovy stuff may not be as impressive, but it sure is fun to play and fun to listen to.

You're right, it's actually very simple, it's just that each limb attached to Haake is impossibly independent from the next. I am Colossus for example is really hard because the hi hat and snare are in 4/4 and the toms and kick are doing whatever the fuck they want in 3/16 but require a huge amount of focus to ensure that (in my case, when I play it) right hand always returns to the snare PRECISELY when it's supposed to--while the hi hat is constantly pulsating. But you can't pussyfoot the hi-hat or else it'll just sound like stupid little heel splashes, you need to STOMP and I can't do that because unless I stop playing for a second, I will actually lose balance and fall backwards off the throne before reaching the second verse. Seriously, it's easier to just play Bleed.

Daniel Calderon Yeah, that particular song is tricky for everybody. Ridiculously long and legato vocal phrases with hardly any room to breathe, atonal lines with big interval jumps in the strings, that irregular 5:3:4 groove in the verses, and of course the drum part.

I went to school with CG Bäckström (same class) and he was so good in his teens that isnt even funny. I loved Meshuggah, and he tried to learn me to play Sickening (I never could pull it off) but I learned alot from him. He was a big fan of Haake already, and Im really happy that he get mentioned here by Haake himself. Thanks for the video. This was heart warming.
