MESHUGGAH is:
Jens Kidman - Vocals
Fredrik Thordendal - Guitars
Tomas Haake - Drums
Mårten Hagström - Guitars
Dick Lövgren - Bass
Lyrics:
Nostrum
Jealous vengeful fabrication
Halo-crowned invention
Sacred universal lie
Artificial divine
Great archaic obsoletum
A prevarication
Deceitfully contrived
Synthesized fictitious
Dreamed up by remote prototypes
Opiate for the yearning mass
Administered applied
Three letter word for monster
Empty promises of healing
Profit aptly buried in the lies
An industry rapt with avarice
Medicating blind
Its acolytes
Useless panacea
Imaginary cure-all
To you we cry and supplicate
Into your hell we fall
Blind belief in their eyes
Forever atoning, credulously waiting
Gazing to the skies

Im a guitarist myself, so I dont know a lot about the drums. But I know a bad ass when I hear one. Haake is one of the drummers that makes me want to go get a nice set of drums and start learning. The very first time I heard Meshuggah was at Ozzfest 2002 in San Diego. I had never heard of them before. So I'm leaning against this brick wall smoking a cigarette when I hear and feel this insane rumbling coming from behind me. Then I hear 2 or 3 random double bass drum rolls, followed by this insane death threat in the form of a growl/scream that would have made any Marine Corps Drill Instructor proud. Then (I would later ID this song) "Straws Pulled at Random" began pulsing through the air as gracefully as an avalanche of boulders tumbling down the side of a mountain, leaving scars to mark their territory. Three people were carried out of the venue on stretchers during the hour long Meshuggah set alone. The pit had three levels. The inner most part was hauling ass in a clockwise direction. The middle "layer" was hauling ass in a counter-clockwise direction. And the outer layer was hauling the most ass in another clockwise direction. Not a single person was in the center. This wasnt a moshpit. It was a vortex....a VIOLENT vortex. This was my first Meshuggah experience.

Another important thing about this video: it is a lesson in drumming ergonomics - notice how relaxed he is - the top view show eh is not over reaching for anything. Everything is easily accessible without extending his arms, which explains why he doesn't tire out easy after playing all that at full bore. Brilliant drummer, easy going and humble just like all of us should be.

This track ‘Nostrum’ is one of my favorite ones on the new album to play,” Haake continues. “It’s definitely got its fair share of ‘instrumental technicality,’ but more importantly I think it ended up having a cool, crazy, erratic-type vibe to it, as well as a playfulness, making it interesting and enhancing the song to beyond its mere technical aspects. This one also has one of the coolest guitar solos on it, played by Fredrik Thordendal of the band

Yes this confirms what I heard - instead of intense foot work, he's got intense work up top with the hands. Great work and I'm super glad that they've decided to post Thomas doing his own song because many of the covers don't pick up the nuances. It's nice to know what the band actually played before moving in your own direction with your own music.

I could not contain myself after watching Haake here and ripped the foam stuffing out of our new $1800 sectional sofa like a rabid dog. This music makes me fucking aggressive. Jesus Christ this is next level Meshuggah when they ran out of levels to take their shit. OK I'm done.

His hands and feet are playing to the bass guitar, the up and down beat are just switched up a lot so it sounds wacky. This isn’t one of their more polyrhythmic songs. Their weirdest polyrhythms are on Koloss I think. It sounds more simple, but Haake plays in three separate time signatures at once multiple times on the album (chorus of I am coloss off the top of my head), albeit much slower than this album.
