What Messi does is slow a little bit to get the defender off his footing, off his pace, just for an instant as he has to adjust to Messi. In that instant, Messi accelerates, leaving the defender flat-footed and beaten by a step or two. It's excellent technique, perfect timing, not raw speed. It's not that Messi is that quick, it's that he makes his move precisely at the moment the defender stops to readjust his footing for an instant. It's tenths of a second that give Messi a step or two advantage. Just beautiful.

It's great to see the little big man run. He's faster with the ball glued to his feet, than most are _without_ a ball lol. WHILE being dragged, pushed, kicked and shoved. AND ending up often with a perfectly placed shot. Thank you Messi, for dedicating yourself so much to this great sport and putting yourself above common (IMO dirty) play like diving for set pieces. Edit: And _way_ past his prime, which in football averages to about 27 years old for an advanced (upfield) player.
