Anna Wintour hosted the annual fundraiser in collaboration with Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s Head Curator, as well as with guest co-hosts Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, & Naomi Osaka. But let's be real, the idea of following the theme given is always difficult for Met Gala attendees. So get ready for a roast!

The funny thing is that, there's a lack of personal culture in the US, most of their culture is base in other countries cultures as basically they decided to kill almost every single native American back in the day so is a country made out of immigrants since it was colonized and also I consider this is why nationalism is so strong because they don't have anything cultural strong enough to hold to. I remember being in a cultural fair in Mexico City, African booths were the biggest ones full of everything from clothes to jewelry and USA's booth was extremely empty with flags and rock and roll music, it was really depressing 😂

Bad communication it seems. I mean, i don't know much about galas, but as in any meeting, i would make sure my guests know what it is about and what to do... Even if its posted in the website and etc, its the organizers' job to spread the right information. I get not all the designs show the theme, but many of them dont fit at all lo!

I really think Lupita nailed the theme. Her hair was inspired by artist Lorna Simpson, which is representative of the experiences of black women’s hair in culture. Was excited to hear your point made in the video, just wish more research was done.

47:23 I’m sorry but I feel like you did Lupita’s look and the concept of the look a massive disservice. I feel like it definitely hits the “American independence” theme because lets not forget that cotton, the main ingredient of denim, was an industry built off the backs of slavery. Not to mention, you brought up the idea of taking something iconic to American couture and modernising it. I feel that the denim dress is already a reference to the Britney Spears’ all denim look (an iconic American red carpet moment), but with a modern twist that is that purple(?) diamond-speckled breakage in the denim dress. But to each their own I guess :( I was just super bummed that all you had to say was “denim,,, great, thank you.” ;-;

@@matthewspinazze4118 It’s the reluctance in his tone when he says “we are hitting the theme…” that didn’t do it for me. He follows it up with “what is it doing, what is it saying, what is its meaning?” which shows that the only connection to the theme he sees is the most obvious being denim. Which to me is such a disappointing take on the look. The connection doesn’t have to be obvious, imo it’s better when the look subtlety tugs at different references of American couture but also culture. I feel like If he looked into the intentions of the designers, he would’ve been able to pick up that subtle connection ;-;

idk I wish there was more discussion about Lupita's look besides "it's denim". The cotton and indigo dye used to produce denim is a direct reference to the labor of slaves during the American slave trade. When I learned that detail, it really shook me, so it's one of my favorites for that alone. And while I'm not a Kim K. fan, her look was also one of my faves! I didn't pick up on her "iconic silhouette" reasoning, BUT it did remind me of ppl posting black squares on IG as some sort of "solidarity" for BLM, as if just showing up and having something black really accomplished anything. (And as for the Slenderman reference... you're absolutely right, I love anything spooky👻) I just kinda feel like so many people were disappointed this time, not only because so many guests missed the mark (OOF), but also because when they DID hit the mark, it wasn't obvious enough to be easily spoon-fed to the public without a little extra lateral thought...

same and i agree about Lupita too she was paying O Mage to the black 70s with the denim the 80's black scene with the black sparkles - whatever for the flare out the waste look forever but trending it up to just one side like a split theme - I LOVED IT the hair is so American Black scene for years and years just no one wanted to know about it - but now its all about BLACK - I looked at it for a sec will have to go back and have Lupita moment if I can find her on vogue - it seems everyone else got a video - no one will read this so we love it hehe thats what Im saying anywayz (o;

The fact that no one did a stylized version of the lady in the "We can do it!" poster is disappointing. I would've gone for that idea right away, like short hair/curled updo, the bandana on the head, the signature top with rolled up sleeves, a sleek navy blue pants with a train skirt of some sort similar to a 1950's skirt. Give her a pair of black heeled boots and some jewelry here and there and bam. Just my thoughts though. I feel like if someone did that, it would've been such a great statement especially for female empowerment.

Grimes talked about how it's a project where people relinquish their guns to make these prop art pieces and it makes the world a little safer. Dune is also strongly anti slavery. Her ensemble was all about "fighting" for peace and the future.

Ok Barbie Ferreira’s dress was one of the first looks I’ve seen on the red carpet that was made for a plus size woman without making her being plus sized like a gimmick or without trying to hide her body. Like it’s a problem that I struggle to think of many others. She looks incredible, the dress is incredible, and I’m really psyched about where fashion can head toward with the normalization of bodies that aren’t like super model, size 00 wearing stunning pieces of couture like this. It gives ya girl hope!

a european once told me on the internet that europeans dress more minimalistic and low-key, and americans dress annoyingly crazy and over-the-top. honestly, i lived i philadelphia and new york- i see people wearing pink barbie outfits with pink heels at coffee shops and at the same time people wearing a t-shirt and leggings. I dont think a country should be defined by one thing- either boring or crazy. Americans dress differently, theres not one style. I lived in a small town in pennsylvania for a while as well, and i would go to school and see kids in sweats, but at the same time i would see girls wearing grungy looking goth outfits

Caged crinolines are mid nineteenth century. They didnt have them in the 17th century and the girls were not wearing them all through the 1800s. 1800s was after the seventeen hundreds. The cage crinoline is a civil war era clothing not a mayflower era pilgrim clothing or revolutionary war era / colonial Williamsburg clothing item.

It was both yall... lol the Holiday Barbie dress and styling (makeup, hair, accessories) she was referring to was hugely inspired by classic Hollywood. They took from both, all. Most experienced designers can incorporate multiple inspirational sources while still making it their own and they nailed it imho. It also fit the theme. That time was *crucial* for women in claiming their femininity, sexuality, bodies, independence, and success on their own, not because of a man.

I think she looked plain and everything blurred into each other. She looked squished in the top and he hair looked like a stiff cap on her head. Her eye makeup was done too dark for her hair. Although he dress had potential to be something gorgeous, it wasn’t on her body shape.

I am OBSESSED with Zac Posen at the MET Gala. I love all of the looks he creates. When you said he carries the MET Gala on his back I smashed that like so hard! I loved your takes on the looks and each tidbit of fashion knowledge you delivered. A lot of people really had a "prom" or "Oscar" feel that was simply underwhelming. I also liked everytime you gave them credit for looking nice even though they didn't follow the theme. Cause like yes you can still dress nice BUT YOU SHOULD FOLLOW THEME IT'S THE FREAKING MET GALA! Usually design houses pay for tables and invite celebrities to their tables, so basically if you go with a designer you have to wesr them. This usually males extremely hard for the met gala to be a platform for upcoming or small designers, tables are REAL expensive.

I'm interested to hear your take on Quanna Chasinghorse. The indigenous model who wore Dundas and turquoise jewelry from the Navajo tribe. I thought that look really turned the "American Independence" theme on its head in a very informative way. She is an indigenous model that is very vocal about wanting to portray Native American culture through fashion. To me that is the winning look hands down.

She looked absolutely stunning in her gold winged dress and authentic Navajo turquoise jewelry borrowed from an actual family member while simultaneously honoring her widely misrepresented Native American heritage. Thank you for particularly good commentary on Dan Levy’s outfit and the football uniform dress being a reference to a 70s design. Another video mentioned the Iris Van Harper dress references melting down guns to make the sword and I am not super familiar with the story but it is on theme. My favorites are Lupita Nyongo’s diagonal gather lines at the waist in denim, Iris Van Harper dress with recycled plastic discs which I think is subtly on theme for referencing American research and innovation to solve problems like pollution, classic feminine blush pink for miles on Billie Eilish, green rose on Eliot Page, Dan Levy’s art story outfit, and starry sky transparent material on Amanda Gorman because it is on theme and illustrates her poetry but as a judge she doesn’t take too much attention away from the other outfits.

I'd love to hear what you have to say about Lewis Hamilton's Met Gala outfit. I don't know if you've heard of him but he's the most successful formula 1 racing driver right now and also has a huge interest in fashion. I love motorsports and fashion so I really respect Lewis for using grand prix tracks as his own personal catwalk, even though a lot of F1 fans make fun of him for it relentlessly because the sport is very male-dominated and most people don't care about fashion. I haven't heard a lot of people talking about his outfit at the gala so I'd love to hear your thoughts. He also bought and entire table and invited four lesser-known young black designers as his guests, which I think is pretty amazing since the Met Gala is often so exclusive and smaller designers don't have the ability to get their names out there.

I admire Hamilton greatly for what he’s trying to do for diversity in the racing and fashion industry but his Met Gala outfit was… not American. You can’t just stick a wedding train to a pant leg and call it “American.” (His outfits on track are much more interesting imo)

Hello. I am happy I'm not the only F1 and fashion fan here. Also, I didn't know that Lewis did that for smaller designers. I can commend him for that. I would have loved a tire reference for his outfit. Give us Indianapolis Grand Prix in a fashion x racing crossover! Or maybe like a reference to America's automotive history in general? Would have been really cool.

Anna Wintour gotta start putting out detailed theme descriptions with the Met Gala invites at this point bc the misinterpretations (or just complete lack of effort) are out of control 😭 I don’t understand why you would show up if you’re just going to wear a random red carpet look unrelated to the event. I thought the celebs would redeem themselves after the disaster that was Camp but this year was even worse smh

Yeah, most of these celebs look clueless, and us who witnessing it and trying so hard to appreaciating fashion, couldn't even enjoy it much. It's supposed to be the pinnacle of fashion art and work every year.

The Zac Posen dress reminds me of one of the deco mesh wreaths that every American soccer mom makes. Reminds me of an old one that is been used for many years for the 4th of July, the cage portion being the wire wreath form and of course the tattered strips being the mesh.

Someone made a point that’s actually really interesting (while it is a reach) Kim kardashian wearing black head to toe feels like she is implying how her silhouette and body have influenced American fashion. You might not think it has but the fact that everyone instantly knew who it was just by her body is very interesting. P.S feature lorde in part 2!!

I'm actually crying watching other people's review of the met galla outfits because they have literally NO idea what they're talking about, they understand zero references, did zero research before hand & again, have zero idea about fashion or the designers. Once again you killed it and you are by far the most interesting person to watch when it comes to fashion and you know what your talking about which makes it worth watching. Ciara’s dress references her husband’s number and team. The NFL has this concept called the color rush uniform where teams will wear alternate colors and designs other than their standard home or away uniforms for one or two games a season. These uniforms are usually brightly colored and rely less on logos and design lines and more on color. Ciara is doing the Seahawks color rush uniform which is a bright, highlighter green from head to toe and is universally panned by football fans. The fact that she’s taken one of the most hated uniform designs in all of football and made it chic, topped off with her husband’s Super Bowl ring, makes both deep sports and fashion references and I love her for that.

I never really thought about the aim of Met Gala before watching your videos but ever since I’ve felt I could look at and make sense of all the fashion I see from there with a more critical eye. I didn’t know the theme when I saw these looks on social media and wasn’t able to guess it. And when I was told I still couldn’t see the references! Some very nice looks but as you say rather lackluster in view of what the assignment was meant to be. For many of these the looks could literally belong to any other event.

@Abigail Pierre Hard for the designers because it looks very ethereal, very hard to craft some of those were amazing. But it's easy to follow because it's hard to go wrong or be out of theme
