Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told he has 'blood on his hands' during tense US Senate hearing

MARK Zuckerberg has been mercilessly warned there is "blood on his hands" for not doing enough to safeguard kids online.
The Meta CEO was dished the damning criticism by Sen. Lindsey Graham during a fiery congressional hearing that saw him and other social media big wigs come under fire from lawmakers on Wednesday.
Zuckerberg was just one of five social media giant CEOs that testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee for the hearing called “Big Tech and the Online Child Sexual Exploitation Crisis.”
CEOs from Meta, TikTok, Snap, Discord, and X, formerly known as Twitter, attended the hearing recorded by C-SPAN.
This included Meta CEO Zuckerberg, X CEO Linda Yaccarino, TikTok CEO Shou Chew, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and Discord CEO Jason Citron.
Senator Lindsey Graham said Zuckerberg and the others have “blood on your hands” due to children who have lost their lives due to situations tied to social media, the Associated Press reported.
The hearing also highlighted how it was found that internal Meta documents suggested it estimated each teen user to be worth $270 to the platforms.
Meta owns Facebook and Instagram.
“Social media companies as they are currently designed and operate, are dangerous products,” Graham said during the hearing.
“They’re destroying lives threatening democracy itself.
“These companies must be reined in.
“Or the worst is yet to come.”
'BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS'
Graham noted he is sure the "blood" is unintentional, but that something needs to be done to get control of it.
“Mr. Zuckerberg, you and the companies before us, I know you don’t mean it to be so, but you have blood on your hands,” Graham said.
“You have a product, that’s killing people.
“When we had cigarettes killing people, we did something about it, maybe not enough.
“You’re going to talk about guns, we have the ATF.”
Graham ended the statement and said, “Nothing here,” referring to nothing protecting lives when it comes to social media.
“There’s not a damn thing anybody can do about it.
“You can’t be sued."
Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy went on to claim Meta platforms have become a "killing field of information" where users "see only one side of an issue" - points vehemently rejected by Zuckerberg.
"You have convinced over 2 billion people to give up all of their personal information - every bit of it - in exchange for getting to see what their high school friends had for dinner Saturday night," Kennedy said.
"And you take this information, this abundance of personal information and then you develop algorithms to punch people's hot buttons ... again and again and again, to keep them coming back and to keep them staying longer.
"As a result, your users see only one side of an issue, and so to some extent, your platform has become a killing field for the truth, isn't it?"

I commented the same thing. This exact senator said this just last year … direct quote … “I don’t think the problem is law-abiding gun owners,” said Sen. Hawley. “I think the problem is criminals who go and shoot people, whether it’s at somebody’s ringing the doorbell, whether it’s somebody like we saw on the streets of St. Louis, where you had a homeless man executed in broad daylight. The criminal put a gun to the back of his head and fired. I’m sure you’ve seen that video. The whole nation has seen that video. We’re seeing that kind of violence everywhere, and the common thread is when you don’t prosecute people who commit a crime, you get more crime, and what we’ve seen in city after city, all across the country.” Oh, so the problem is not the guns but the people that abuse them? Interesting.

The last thing we need is regulation from politicians who know nothing about the culture of the internet to make regulations that would adversely affect free usage of the internet. I can guarantee you that just like The Patriot Act, FISA, and now KOSA, this act will be used as a prime opportunity for more government control of our freedoms.

This Senator wanted his 15 minutes of fame at Mark Zuckerberg’s expense. Do you blame a car manufacturer if a person drives recklessly and kills someone? Meta needs to do its part in how it oversees its platforms and apps, but people also need to take personal responsibility. Parents need to be aware of what content their children are viewing online. If a parent/guardian is using electronic devices, social media, and the internet as a babysitter, then that person is not being responsible. You can’t abdicate your role as a parent to a tech company. Meta’s CEO should not have been pressured and humiliated into making a forced apology. Shame on that Senator for how he treated Mark Zuckerberg, and how the media circled like vultures around their prey. Disgusting!

Shouldn't be forcing someone to say something then. That was not Zuckerberg's fault (and let there be no misunderstanding - I am NOT a fan of anyone involved in this matter to put it politely). You can't exactly blame him for being insincere - it's not fair.

@@letsdiscussitoversometea8479 - If he actually realized he was wrong, he would have seen as an opportunity given to him to sincerely apologize but he didn't because he wasn't. The one who is insincere is always the one who can exactly be blamed. He at least could have been sincere enough to say, "sorry, not sorry."
@letsdiscussitoversometea8479
@letsdiscussitoversometea8479 6 ай бұрын
@@newmyr-2556 if he was insincere then that's *precisely* a good reason he shouldn't have had his hand forced. If in the future he *_does_* reflect on his situation objectively, and deduces that he _should_ have said "sorry" [under HIS own terms], then it's going to be treated with undue scepticism. He'll be called dishonest and all the rest of it. Giving an answer under duress presents ramifications that others may fail to appreciate. Imagine getting bullied when you were in school and a teacher or parent forcing the bully to say "sorry"...what were your thoughts about the teacher or parent?? I'd consider them very ignorant (even though *_they_* personally might have meant well). I'd feel sympathy with the bully, which isn't exactly healthy for relationships between people given the circumstances. Extremely corrosive.

I am not a fan of Zuckemberg and his company, but in this trial I have to side with him. It's not his fault if some people use his "product" to harm other people. I give you an example, if I produce chairs, I should not be responsible if one of my clients used the chair he purchased by me for throwing that chair in the head of someone else. That's not the purpose why the chair was built in the first place. It's totally responsability of the client/user. In this case, those who committed illegal actions should be prosecuted, not the owner of the company.

What is being done here is unfair and only an unjust cruelty for entertainment of others. Those with the actual power to change the laws berate those without legislative power over things they themselves failed to implement because they were paid not to do so. Aiming it all on Mark Zuckberg of all people is truly a cherry on top of a pie of tragic irony. Yet, I do find one big tech CEO sorely missing at the hearing. A feast with fire but no food...

The employees don't exactly map which person sees what.

Three things I would like to mention: 1. The way in which Mr Hawley continually asks unanswerable questions, interrupting Mr Zuckerberg literally every few seconds and furthermore putting answers in his mouth that the latter did not give, is evidence of Mr Hawley's unseriousness and impertinence. 2. This suggestion may sound very, very crazy, but how about not giving minors, especially children, mobile phones or at least regulating their use? As a side effect, brain development would no longer be impaired. 3. None of the previous statements are intended to disguise the seriousness of the problems addressed in the video, but the one-sidedness with which the facts are often viewed shocks me a little!
