The later generation Chinese adapters (i.e. Roxsen, Lens Turbo II) are pretty good too and quite a bit cheaper. I think I grabbed one for $80 delivered. Mine has performed well, with two caveats: 1) you have to be careful shooting into direct light sources...a blue hazy dot will show up near the center of the frame. 2) you might have to adjust the infinity focus on the adapter, which is very easy. The lens element in the adapter is held by a threaded ring and fixed with a set screw. I've looked at comparisons and the Metabones clearly sets the bar high. However, I've been really pleased with my Roxsen, which pretty much stays fixed to the back of my Canon FD 28mm/f2.0. For those who enjoy shooting full manual, these speed-boosters are a no-brainier.

+JB6789 For what it's worth, I had to adjust infinity focus on my Speed Booster, too. Like you said, it's pretty easy. If I ever get an APS-C camera on the side, I'll probably pick up a Lens Turbo adapter.

Hey Ryan welcome back. You should definitely do a review on this 150$ Lens Turbos people are talking about. See, I live in Venezuela and I get to spend 300$ a year on gear bought in another country so i really have to be sure of what i'm getting. I would be cool and you'll make your viewers happy, not many vídeos about that online.

I concur huge fan of Metabone I have been a Canon pro for ages and have almost all L series glass. I just added GH5 to my video systems and when I mounted my 14 mm L II on GH5 with Metabone Ultra 0.64. Wow the focal length now is 1.7 and area of coverage is 24 mm. The results are simply amazing. The AF works great. I am amazed how well speed booster performs.

I just purchased a Lens Turbo II (EF to MFT) for my new UWA setup (rokinon 10mm 2.8). So far I think it's a pretty good adapter, built well (all metal), feels sturdy to me, and image seems sharp. The focal reduction is smaller (0.726) than the metabones one, and some reports say metabones is sharper, but for 150$ i take it as a reasonable trade-off. Again, images look quite sharp to me. I want to try and do a comparison to see if it sharpens the image (even slightly), will use my Helios 44-2 for that purpose. One thing I'm also trying to figure out, if you actually get larger out of focus area together with the increased light gathering capabilities. It's hard to see clearly, I tried doing side by side with oly 45mm, and bokeh seemed very close. I think LTII is a pretty good alternative overall. And getting a canon mount adapter (ef to mft) for either brand seems to make a lot of sense, I just bought a 5$ m42 to ef adapter ring and stacked it on the LTII to adapt my helios 44-2, and already ordered a PK to EF ring for my 44k-4 (also an interesting test I want to try, put those lenses side by side). It seems that canon is very easy to adapt to because of their flange distance (unlike nikon), so I should be able to adapt almost any legacy lens to my LTII, which increases the value imo.

+Timur Dzhambinov How do you like that Rokinon? A 7/2.0 sounds pretty awesome for Micro 4/3 :) As for the bokeh question, this is how I think of it. Depth of field is impacted by (a) distance between the camera and the subject, where the closer you are = the shallower the DOF, and (b) the absolute size of the aperture, where a larger aperture = shallower DOF. When you use a focal reducer, you are increasing the f-stop of the lens, but it's not by increasing the absolute size of the aperture -- the aperture is the same, it's the effective focal length that is reduced. Let's take a standard 50mm f-2.0 lens example. It's aperture size is 50mm/2.0 = 25mm absolute aperture size. Put that lens on Speed Booster and it becomes a 35mm f-1.4, and 35/1.4 = 25mm -- still the same absolute size for the aperture. What that means is that, if you don't change the distance between subject and camera, the lens on a Speed Booster will give the same depth of field as the same lens on a standard adapter, because we haven't changed the two factors that affect DOF. HOWEVER, because you now have a wider field of view, you can move the camera closer to the subject to create similar framing. And this is now affecting one of the two factors. You will get shallower depth of field by moving the camera closer to the subject. (Just think of how shallow your DOF is when shooting macro.)

That's what I thought happens as well. It makes sense logically, I just want to test it myself and see if it actually makes a big difference. I quite like the lens for sure, it's wider than anything I ever used (closest being my samyang 12mm f2). In fact, it's so wide with the adapter, it's wider than originally intended for the apsc cameras, so I see a tiny bit of the hood) I just use it with a 3:2 setting, then hood is not visible. Extreme corners are not as sharp as the 12mm (but still quite usable for me personally), it's a big lens, but I think for tripod use on small apertures it's perfect for me. And was a lot cheaper than native uwa setups. Center frame is very sharp, focus ring is so smooth, I love turning that thing all day lol. I haven't taken it out to the field yet, just some walk around shooting so far.

The 135/2.8 JC penny lens I bought to go with it make it like a 190 with the light gathering of F2! Pretty awesome.

I love adapting my old Pentax SLR lenses to my Olympus Pen E-PM1. I have purchased a few dumb adapters for my camera, and I have just recently ordered my own Focal Reducer (Which isn't a Metabones brand). With it I can attach my favourite Sigma 28mm f/2.8 and get a wider field of view. After carefully researching focal lengths of Micro 4/3s lenses. 28mm is roughly 56mm, and with my new Voigtlander 21/25mm Range Finder, it's referring to in Full Frame. In other words, 12mm lens for Micro 4/3s is about 24mm on a full frame.

I purchased the Metabones Canon EF/ Micro 4/3 Speed Booster XL-BL from B&H Photo in April of 2016. My application was using the Panasonic GH-4 and the Speed Booster with the many Canon lenses I had accumulated. The unit worked well most of the time, but the GH-4 would occasionally show the “Lens attachment failed” error screen when I attached a different lens. I thought it was the lens choice, but noticed that all but one of the lenses I had were original Canon units. On 09/29/2016 the GH-4 firmware was updated to version V25 and the Speed Booster interface problem began to occur much more frequently. I continued to think it may have been due to my inexperience with the GH-4 camera functions, so I tried to learn about and attempt almost every combination of camera and lens settings. Nothing worked. On 12/07/2016 the Speed Booster firmware was updated to version V2.5, and on 12/08/2016 the GH-4 firmware was again updated to version V26. Now EVERY lens I try to attach gives the same attachment failure error message. I can only use the combination if I place the lens inside the Speed Booster mount but only turn enough to secure it without actually connecting the contacts of the lens and the Speed Booster. Of course this won’t allow any lens communication with the camera, but will still allow the use of the lens as a completely manual unit. I have tried both the Green Power-Save mode (default) and the Advanced Manual Focus mode on the Speed Booster and I still get the same results. I find it almost unbearable that I purchased this unit mainly for the ability to use my Canon lenses on the GH-4 like I use them on my Canon bodies, i.e. with full control of the lens focus functions. I can’t believe a $650 unit designed to do this, heralded as the best unit of its type available in the marketplace, only lasted for a few months before failing completely. Of course I am beyond the 30 day period usually given for a return window. I could never give this unit more than one star, and would seriously love to give it much less that one star, if that were possible. I have never been as disappointed with a seemingly serious photography product as I have been with this Metabones unit.

UPDATE: I obtained the information I needed to possibly get the unit repaired on 12/27/2016 and sent the Speed Booster to Hong Kong for repair (as is required by Metabones). I was required to pay the cost to ship there and back, along with any other custom fees for international shipping. I had no claim number and no guarantee that the repair will be accepted as a warranty covered item. I received the “repaired” Metabones Speed Booster back from Hong Kong on Monday (01/16/2017) along with the return documents. The unit was unpacked, removed from the plastic storage container, and immediately mounted on my Panasonic GH4 camera body. I then attempted to mount three Canon lenses in succession on the adapter- (EF 17-40mm f/4L, EF 24-105mm f/4L, and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L). Each lens I mounted failed any identification and acceptance by the GH4 camera. In other words, the Metabones unit was acting the same as before the repair process. I then decided to eliminate any possibility that my camera body was at fault by arranging a test protocol with a local camera dealer here in town. I took the Metabones Speed Booster, along with my camera bodies and lenses, to the camera shop for bench testing. When I arrived and discussed the issue with the store owner, he suggested I first attempt to mount the Speed Booster on two new camera bodies and witness the results before any bench testing was done. We mounted the Metabones unit on a new Olympus E-M1 Mark II camera body, attached an EF lens, and turned the camera on. The Olympus camera failed to accept or even recognize the lens and would not allow light to pass through the Speed Booster, and into the camera. We then tried two other Canon lenses, only to get the same results. Next we unboxed a brand new Panasonic GH4 body and tried the same procedure, only to get the “lens attachment failure” screen each time a lens was attached to the Speed Booster. At this point we were convinced the problem was the Speed Booster. My cost to send the unit to Hong Kong and back for repair was over $60. This means I’ve spent over $700 for a unit that does not work, even after an attempted repair. I can’t tell you how demoralizing this is.

2nd UPDATE: I have been corresponding with B&H Photo continuously during this ordeal and have understood their position regarding the return window. However, as of this week they have agreed to replace the unit with a functioning one as soon as they receive my failed unit. I will update when the replacement unit arrives and the functionality is verified.
@kuntaleroy7414
@kuntaleroy7414 7 жыл бұрын
FINAL UPDATE: I received the replacement Metabones Speed Booster from B&H Photo today as promised. Of course I was anxious to mount the adapter on my GH4 camera body and start the testing, and that’s exactly what I did. The adapter was initially mounted on the camera body and the camera was turned on. The first lens I mounted was the EF 17-40mm f/4L and immediately the mount worked. The GH4 accepted the lens and was fast and accurate in processing focus info from lens to camera to lens. The Speed Booster and lens combo also resulted in an apparent 1.5 stop increase in the lens aperture, allowing me to shoot 4K video inside my home office under relatively low light (1 small lamp) at 1600 ISO and get excellent perfectly usable footage. Next I mounted the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L mainly to test the autofocus accuracy and the GH4 / EF lens response speed. The combination worked flawlessly with fast accurate focusing even in that low-light situation. I dare say even new Lumix lenses equipped with internal memory of bokeh files to use with the GH4’s new DFD focusing technology would, at best, produce only minimal increase in this focusing speed. This is, of course, what makes all the hassle I went through worth it.

Unfortunately I have a Canon FD lens 28mm f2, an Olympus OM 50mm f1.8 and a Contax one 85mm and it would be impractical to get a metabone for each of them at that cost. I guess going for an native m4/3 could end being even cheaper. On the other end I like the feel of those old lenses better.

@Michromatic
@Michromatic 8 жыл бұрын
+boerenkool I have a Pen-F lens, it's one of my favorites. I'd guess we won't see a Pen-F to Micro 4/3 Speed Booster for two reasons: (1) The Pen-F half frame isn't that much larger than a Micro 4/3 sensor, so there's probably not much extra image circle to compress to M43. And (2), the flange distance -- the distance between the back of the lens and the image sensor -- is quite short with Pen-F, which doesn't leave much room for Metabones optics. Metabones has previously stated that there won't be Leica M adapters for the same reason, the short flange distance doesn't allow room for more glass.

Hey! Great video and some amazing shots. From what I remember you shoot with an Olympus Pen E-PL7, and from what I've read about Metabones Speed Boosters that's the only Olympus camera that's compatible with all kinds of them so that's great. I already have the EF to MFT 0.64x for my GH4, I love it. Now I'm tempted to get an EM5mkII as a second camera for my video work, but not sure if it'll work with the SB.
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 8 жыл бұрын
+Jaime Jaime I have shot with an E-PL7 before, but it was a loaner -- most of these shots were shot on the Olympus E-P5 and EM5ii. The Olympus cameras that may not fit the Speed Booster are E-PM2, E-PL5, E-PL6, and E-M5 (original). The Speed Booster XL might be different. According to Metabones's site, the E-M5ii does not support the XL (0.64x).

Nice videos ,Good information! I'm stumped on lens choices I have the gh 5 And invested in the medanones speedbooster and the sigma 18-35mm because of all the great reviews I've read. The benefits I noticed are bettter in low light and lil more boki , but is that worth the $1400 for the setup? I also have the Panasonic 12-35 with dual IS this lens goes on my zyhriun crane matter of fact this set up is why I bought the camera. I'm now getting a zoom, I already bought the tamron 70-200 vc g2 but I hear so many good things about the Panasonic 35-100 dual ISSo I might buy that too to do a review on this exact setup. If I like the Panasonic 35-100 then I see no need for the medanones and the sigma and I could just buy a 1.4 prime lens for the Low light comparison. I guess my question is should I go nAtive or medanones? Is the 70-200 full frame lens with medanones much better then the native Panasonic 35-100 with dual Is? The tameron 70-200 f2.8 with medanones would be 2.0 (full frame conversion would be f4.0) The Panasonic 35-100 f2.8 (full frame conversion would be f5.6)

I love metabones speed booster for video work with manual focus + GH4. However I also take some still photos of kid's soccer games and I'm wondering if there's any EF mount lenses that I can use for medium to fast action still photos. I have Sigma 18-35mm with SB and the autofocus is OK for portrait photos but not for action photos. I'm worried that other longer lenses (Canon 70-200mm, Sigma 50-100mm) might have the same autofocus speed as Sigma 18-35mm. Any thoughts or comments? Thanks...

Does the speed booster actually helps with bokeh, or just the amount of light? Awesome video as always. I wish you'd post more... we enjoy your quality videos a lot. Cheers.
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 8 жыл бұрын
+Mister R "Does the speed booster actually helps with bokeh, or just the amount of light?" I'll assume you're asking if it creates more bokeh / shallower depth of field, and not about the quality of the bokeh. The answer is "yeah, it kinda does, but no not really." Because you get a wider field of view, you can get closer to your subject to create similar framing to a shot without the Speed Booster. And because you've gotten closer to the subject, you'll get more bokeh in the background. But, let's say you have a 50/1.8 lens and you're using a Speed Booster to adapt to an APS-C camera. This makes the math pretty easy -- on the APS-C camera, you'll get the same FOV as the 50/1.8 on a full frame camera. And you'll even get more light, equivalent to about 50/1.2. However, the bokeh will be the same as a 50/1.8 lens on a full frame camera.
@misterr2359
@misterr2359 8 жыл бұрын
Michromatic Perfect answer. Thank you very much. So, from what I understand, it won't make that difference, because the 50/1.8 on FF will make a similar bokeh than a 75mm/1.8 (1.5x aps-c) on a Sony, eg. Well, this is approximately, of course, as it might be a little shallower with the speed booster, but I don't think I would see the difference. Agree?
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 8 жыл бұрын
+Mister R Copying a comment I made somewhere else... 50/1.8 = ~28mm aperture, 75/1.8 = ~42mm aperture Shot from the same distance, the 75/1.8 will give you much shallower depth of field, with or without a Speed Booster. Of course, the composition of the photo changes between these two lenses, with and without a focal reducer :)

Hey, awesome that you posted a new video! I'm just getting into m4/3 and want to make videos so I got a hacked GH2, and am now waiting for my 1.4 50mm FD Lens. l love your videos and I've learned so much thank you. I'm a director and I own a couple of production companies here in LA. I've been getting more hands on with cameras and learning so I can increase my skill set as a director. Question.. for commercials and promos I have a drone. The inspire 1 pro x5 which is a micro 4/3 camera. Also the osmo pro which uses the same camera. I'm looking for a good 4/3 lens that gives me a nice film look, and shoot in low light a lot and love the speed booster I use it on my Sony A7s. What do you recommend as far as a 4/3 lens that will give me a smooth film look, wide and normal.. I really dont use telephoto... maybe i would on the drone. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! I really like all the informations your giving with your videos :) Now I have a question that tickles me. I'd like to buy a focal speed booster for my OM lenses like yours BUT, I'm not willing to pay that much as I live in Quebec, Canada. It's about 25% more expensive because of the exchange rate. So I was wondering, if I buy an adapter ring for OM to Nikon or Canon then a Turbo speed booster II or a Commlite, would that be a functional combination? Or maybe it'll be more simple to sell all my older stuff and buy micro 4/3 lenses which will be more expensive? Your opinion would be much appreciated. Hope I'm clear enough as my first language is french. ;) Thanks again!

Nice Lens, normally mounted in my Panasonic G3. Af is fast, less than Sigma 19mm f2.8 DN but faster than Panasonic 20mm f1.7 MkII. Af normally not fail, but with poor light is prone to fail little more than my other lenses. In very dark situation sometimes you must use light assist lamp, keeping relative close distance to the subject to ensure af acquisition. The resolution is hi when you close a little, this is no a pro grade lens, it is not stellar... but it is very good lens. Suffers some distortion and at f6.3 / f7.1 is fantastic sharp as expected from a regular wide lens. The costruction is solid, not stellar again, but much better than kit lens. I don´t like the botton to retract the lens because (at least for me) I can´t take the first picture fast if needed. The best of this lens is the size, really small, tipical 52mm filter (IF type, can´t rotate while focusig or zooming) and of course, color... is really beatiful how its represents colors. It's a little priced because there is no much direct competitors in its line, but still is very cheap compared to Panasonic 7-14 (stellar, very expensive and better performer), the good lenses made in Korea have not AF, so... this Oly 9-18 is unique.

Speed Boosters (focal reducers) are great and you are right about the angle of view and sharpness advantage but what you said about aperture is not correct, Tony & Chelsea Northrup made a video about that. When you put a full frame lens on a crop body you have to apply crop factor to both, focal length and aperture, so by using speed booster you are not getting more light than the lens was designed to gather, but instead you are reducing the aperture "crop factor" making it closer to nominal 1.4 i your example.

Can you boost speed even your not adapting from a different lens system?
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 6 жыл бұрын
No, not with modern technology. There are two conditions required, neither of which will be the case if using native glass: (1) the flange distance for the Speed Boosted lens must be greater than that of your native mount, and (2) the lens must project an image circle larger than your camera's sensor.

How well does it work to micro 4/3 or old FD mounts to cameras. I did see that some of them are pretty bad and wile it does add a whole extra step of light it ruins the focus so you need to step it down anyway.
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 6 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "it ruins the focus"?
@HibikiKano
@HibikiKano 6 жыл бұрын
Michromatic Excuse my bad English. Dont really know English optics terms. But from what I have seen in sone reviews people complained over the loss of sharpness when shooting fully open. You just cant seem to focus sharp with a focal reductor on a fully opened fast lens. You can only focus sharp two steps down. Which kind of defeats the "speed" part of the adapter. Only making it a focal reducer really. Plan on mounting them on FD lenses but those reviews scared me a bit.
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 6 жыл бұрын
Ah, gotcha. It's generally true that lenses -- not just lenses on a Speed Booster -- are sharper when stopped down, and softer when wide open. The degree to which this is true varies from lens to lens. Another generally-true assumption is that older lenses are MORE prone to softness wide open than are newer lenses. But this is a property of the lens, not the Speed Booster, so it would be true if the lens was used with a regular adapter too. Let's say you have an f/2.0 lens that is soft at f/2.0, but pretty sharp at f/2.8. Put the lens on a Speed Booster and set it to f/2.8 -- you'll get the sharpness benefit of the f/2.8 aperture and still get the light gathering of an f/2.0 lens.
@HibikiKano

Great video! Thinking about buying this speed booster... what about manual aperture control? The aperture stays open on my Zuiko 50 f/1.4 until a photo is taken. Are you able to adjust your apertures manually while using the speed booster? Thanks!
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 8 жыл бұрын
Every adapter I've used -- including this Speed Booster -- holds the internal pin on the lens that closes the aperture. Instead of pushing the pin only during the exposure, the pin is constantly held, so the aperture ring operates the aperture directly. So yes, you get full manual control on the aperture. It just doesn't wait for the exposures to make the change inside the lens.

Wow, thanks for this review!! I had not heard of this product, but I *need* one now! I have the em-5 mkII and I picked it because I'm an Oly fanboi. I have been shooting OM system cameras for quite a while. I have the adapter from Olympus, and had no idea I could get back some of my wideness along with free speed! I have some of the same lenses, some of which were my dad's. I've got the 50/1.4, the 24/2.8, the 35-70/3.5, and recently the 28/2.0 and the 180/2.8. One annoyance of mine with the Oly adapter is that some of my lenses (perhaps all, I need to test it) want to focus past infinity. Does this suffer from that too? How does it fare with regards to chromatic aberration? Thanks again!
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 8 жыл бұрын
The Metabones allows you to adjust the internal bits to get infinity focus where you want it. Personally, I like to be able to focus past infinity just a bit so that I know my infinity focus is as perfect as possible.

Well I got it a few weeks ago, and it's pretty awesome. The lens mount is loose and wobbly, and after some hit and miss with their support I am supposedly going to receive another mount ring. It seems to have the same limitations with lenses - those with larger rear element protector tabs will have to be modified to work (remove the tab). Using it with a 28/f2.0 it's sharp enough to shave with. It also makes my rather soft 50/1,4 quite usable set to f2 and reclaiming the light back down to 1.4. I'm quite impressed with it. Even telephotos sharpen up a bit, and the extra stop makes hand shooting that much easier.
@Michromatic

hugeshows Yeah, the mount on mine was SUPER tight when I first got it, both on the camera and the OM lens end. I got a bit of lithium grease to apply and smooth the connection. You definitely shouldn't have to accept a loose mount unless something is wrong with your lens.

thank you for this review, which I just saw now. I was wondering whether there are any other speed boosters for the 0M mount lenses other than the meta-bones at this point? I have not found any, and I am interested in getting one of these as I have quite a few old OM mount lenses. also, I have read that the flange on some of the 0M mounts can cause problems as you noted in this review. However it does not seem as if you have had any problem with a couple of the lenses that I have. Does anyone know whether the meta-bones 0M speed booster works with the following lenses (obviously, all 0M mount): Sigma 28 mm wide-angle (which I probably will not use), and the following Zuiko 0M lenses: 50 mm F1.4 (which you profiled so assume it works); 50 mm F1.8; 50 mm F3.5 macro; 85 mm F2; 100 mm F2.8 (which you also profiled so I assume it works as well); 135 mm F2.8; 180 mm F2.8; 200 mm F4; and 300 mm F4.5. Thanks much.

Thank you for the response. I found and purchased (from Adorama, for $200) a focal reducer made by Kipon that is designed for OM lenses and MFT bodies. The Baveye model, without electronics. I could not find any real review of that specific model, or even much in the way of reviews of other models addressing how the adapter affects image quality and the like. (Most of the reviews focused on whether the adapter handled automatic features for the specific lenses involved, which is not relevant to my needs.) The manufacturer sent me a link to some forum talk on DP review that gave the adapter a relatively good grade for IQ, although the chatter suggested that MetaBones could be better. The manufacturer (in somewhat fractured English) told me it would work with all of the lenses I listed. When I get it, I will give it a try. Thanks again.

Lin Peter, I don't think I have used it enough to be particularly fair. But here goes. It is well built. Looks like metal to me. Comes in a nice case.
