Metacritic vs Yelp: A Mathematical Analysis

Are video games better than pizza? This ridiculous question requires an elaborate answer. The short answer is "Yes." The long answer is this 27-minute video in which I cross-analyze the linguistic patterns of 500 one-star Yelp reviews of famous New York pizzerias and 500 "zero" Metacritic user reviews of acclaimed triple-A video games.
The medium-length answer is that haters on Yelp use almost three times as many exclamation marks, per average, as haters on Metacritic, though Metacritiquers ask twice as many rhetorical questions as Yelp users.
I go into deep detail on a wide variety of words and phrases in this video. I tell you about a selection of words my twelfth-grade English composition teacher, Mrs. Parker-Davis, banned from any assignments. One of the words was "very." The punishment for using any of the banned words was an F for the semester.
Clearly, Mrs. Parker-Davis has had some impact on the adult I grew up into, because here I am a few weeks from my fortieth birthday literally photoshopping red pen over a guy's insistence that Red Dead Redemption 2 "looks just like a PS2 game." Man, it absolutely does not.
If a half-hour lecture on this topic, complete with rapid-fire charts, graphs, facts, and figures appeals to you, buddy, you're going to want to click that play button.

I can't understand why people would dislike this, its THE absolutely ******* best review I ever witnessed in my ENTIRE LIFE!!!! Their is _very_ much nothing else I'd rather do with my time. Seriously, isn't this *litteraly* the analysis we've all been waiting for?? The hype, as I laid eyes on this video's title, had been very real. Then, as it neared it's end I felt overwhelmed with the need to share with you all how well Tim delivered on his subject. I've been looping this for 10 hours just to make sure this review is on par with its counterpart (Though I feel obligated to disclose I was drunk while seeing it). Could I have done it better myslelf? I don't know, I'll probably sit alone in front of my bedroom mirror this evening and find out! Have a good one people!

I believe that this analytical take on reviews is one of the reasons I enjoy Tim Rogers' reviews. The Dragon Quest XI review gave me a lot of helpful information that helped me make an informed choice, such as the game as an experience that you are not to rush. Although a game or pizza review has to be subjective, the review can be informative and helpful.

I think a lot of your fans particularly enjoy your language-arts related content. Your English teacher’s list of words and phrases she recommends not to use was interesting, and embarrassing, for the 99% of us who immediately cycled through our last dozen uses of the word “very” after you explained what makes it such a bad word. Also, my grandpa is a published poet, and I remember asking him once if the word “stuff” was appropriate for one of his poems, and he said “yeah, it’s a good word. I like it.” He’s the most well-read, well-spoken person I know, and also borderline pretentious with his critiques of writings, so that surprised me. I’m gonna ask him how he feels about that list next time I see him. I’d appreciate it if you told us any more words or phrases that were put on that board too. Anyway, nice video. I love Sonic.

I personally believe "actually" is fine as long as you follow some simple rules: don't over-use it, don't use it to be condescending, make sure you absolutely have your facts in order. If you're the kind of person who uses "literally" correctly then you're probably okay to use actually occasionally.

It was mentioned in the video, but I feel it's glossed over: the time, place, medium, device, and intention at the time of writing the review are influential factors in the shaping of the review (semantics-wise). Maybe Metacritic reviews tend to be more involved simply because the users are more involved in writing the review.

This is fucking hysterical (in a good way). Also wanted to say THANK YOU for including the bit about the word underwhelming. You said it was a boring finding, but it's actually interesting to me because I pay attention to linguistic trends, and I think "game likers" have that word in their storehouse of circlejerk dog whistles, which would explain why it's not present in the totally different realm of pizza complaints.

So I'll just say that I laughed aloud several times, even slapped my desk in applause (though I'm ashamed to admit that it was the news of your teacher's death that evoked the strongest laugh - excellent delivery, and I must say she sounds like a wonderful person. I imagine she contributed to your fascination with language - having just one or two good teachers can have such a positive impact on your life). Also you could definitely write, or Google, an excel formula to calculate the ratio of caps to lower case letters.
