Gold farming is not illegal, but just as Al Capone found out, one must report income from all sources. Theoretically, you have to report barter transactions as well, which would include the free market value of the Lich King's sword.

I was a blizzard GM and supervisor for 12 years in France. The anti bot actions are done by a super small department of like 10 people and hunting bots is not even their main focus. GMs are ticket machines, following up on a bot report is working against your ticket per hour metrics, so most GMs would throw them away. I used to clean up the realm I was playing on every morning in classic WOW for fun and kept it clean for 2 years. But new bots would be up or even transfered over from other realms every day. Everyday there were about 10 teleport bots in ZG, 5-10 in Mara, 5-10 in Dire Maul. ~5 Fishing Bots around the world (usually Tanaris, Feralas, Wetlands), and about 10 groups of 5 multibox bots in various dungeons (leveling more flying bots). Blizzard wouldn't be able to stop it now even if they wanted to, they had the chance to put a stop to it back in 2008-2012 but they grew too fast and had other priorities. Pressure from Activision made everything worse. And we know they won't do it now because it would require hiring ~1000 or 2000 people to ONLY deal with bots and reports. There are so many things wrong with the gold system: no tracking, no proper logs, badly coded or non existant GM tools, limited access to existing tools, guild bank and auction house logs are a mess, mass actions are not really possible for GMs based on reports. The big ban waves are profiling based on account meta data and are made to have as few as possible false positives, so they catch only the most obvious blatant stupid bot setups (not the pros). There is so much more in criminal energy, stolen credit cards, actual paypal fraud etc. The only real way I see out of this would be to provide self government tools to the community and have a community based system to track and weed out bad elements like bots.
@Diceman82
@Diceman82 11 ай бұрын
I guess this explains why I never got caught doesn't it , they were never really trying to begin with. Well, that's unfair, they just lacked the proper tools to do so.
@PiratDunkelbart

Community driven may work, if they film themselves doing it with OBS etc while they investigate. Otherwise this will result in a powertrip or even scamming (pay 200 bucks to get your acc back etc). I dont know if paid GMs are involved in such things, but I mean we literally had this happening just some weeks ago with Runescape. ^^ Btw, a quick cost estimate of hiring 1000+ ppl would turn in to at least 10 to 20 millions per year, just to have a chance to go to war. But yeah, if they have bad or no tools to begin with because of bad tracking code, theres no way you attempt this.

Sounds like you banned alot of bots wich makes your logic of 1000-2000 people needed kinda weird. People aren't requesting for every bot to be removed instantly but having around 100 dedicated people to this would have removed so much gold influx in to the game. The problem is this needed to be implemented years ago. The economy of even wow classic got fucked for noone managing bots.

I used to sell gold back in Legion. No farm, no bots, just grueling work. Me and my friend would plan and experiment routes, professions, play with the AH, you name it. It always amazed me how we would spend hours farming gold in what we thought it was a mined field with a GM in each corner ready to ban us. Now it all makes sense. When we started to have our first transactions, we would announce blatantly in trade chat because we didn't know anyone, and having to do it through a middleman to sell it was too expensive, our families depended on us so every dollar counted. After a couple of months, I really was nervous because I said to myself "The fact that we're not banned yet, spamming that we sell gold through trade chat is pure luck. I'm sure our luck is gonna run out any day, and we got to have money saved to buy another account". But nothing ever happened, actually, I'm still using that account as a main, and play from time to time. I remember at the very end of Legion, how Suramar was FULL of Tauren druids (%50 herb speed + no unmount due to travel form), day and night doing that shit. That's when I kind of understand that we were merely a drop compared to an immense sea of bots.

One thing that's often overlooked: This isn't 00's Blizzard, it's 2020s ActiBlizz we're talking about. They aren't going to seriously invest in a solution to botting and RMT unless it can be demonstrably proven that doing so will be profitable. Maybe something will change once Microsoft takes over, but that remains to be seen.
@Geckomayhem

If the takeover stops getting pushed back... But yeah, it will be interesting to see how much of an ethical stance Microsoft takes regarding RMT in online games. They have some of the smartest techies in the world; surely they can come up with various solutions that start to make botting and gold selling not just unprofitable, but dangerous.

It wont change. Blackrock and Vanguard are some of the majority shareholders in microsoft, and their the same majority shareholders in ActivisionBlizzard. They do not give a flying fuck about the integrity of the game, they only care about their profits. It will be more of the same as long as the parasitic investment firms are allowed to own everything.

Few months ago there was a big blue post of them saying "Over last few weeks 120K accounts got banned" - 120K accounts X 13$ sub = over 1.5M dollars a MONTH, and that's without buying any boosts. So i pretty much doubt that blizzard see bots as a problem. On Retail WoW i don't even see botting as a problem, the only thing me and my team or guild spend gold is for flasks/potions. Wotlk on the other hand has way bigger problem than botting, which is GDKP. If you ban GDKP what's the point of having 100K bots farming gold if players dont have anything to spend it on

At this point, the gold sellers are pretty much a part of Blizzard Staff - they ultimately earn blizzard more money than the GM's that used to police them. It's not like "For every bot in the game, 1 regular player quits because of bots", it's more like "For every 100 bots, 1 player quits because of bots".

Considering the game is a 1/6th of it's peak population I'd say it's more than 1 per 100. You are really underselling how much cheating affects gameplay and player retention. Look at games like Escape from Tarkov. The game was ruined by cheating and players fled for the hills. The gold botting and gdkps have reached new heights and players are not oblivious to how that's changed the gameplay itself. Once veterans realize the game has little to no anti-cheat they move on to other games where achievements and gear have more meaning, rather than who swiped a credit card.
@LobbeWOW
@LobbeWOW 11 ай бұрын
@@blaket1841 You can't compare the impact of hackers and bots in Tarkov to the botters and hackers in WoW outside of pvp. It's not like bots are boosting players through content and selling them gear, instead it's the players themselves doing these things and funding it largely through the use of gold buying. At the absolute peak of extremity, you have players that are actually happy that bots exists to farm gold that they can buy, because the amount of money they need to pay for obscene amounts of gold is actually pocket change for them.
@blaket1841
@blaket1841 11 ай бұрын
@@LobbeWOW And the players who are happy about it don't mind cheating, thus the ones that remain which is a fraction of the player base. Mostly dad gamers who don't have time to invest into an mmo and would rather spend money to have someone else essentially play for them.

As the creator of Glider, stumbling across this video was quite the surprise. I've been following the trend of the game (and overall decline of Blizzard) from afar and seeing these same old problems back again has been surreal, especially since the scope of the RMT impact is just so huge now. Seeing the various guesses in the comments about Blizzard's apparent inaction is a bit sad, things were different back then. But, hey, maybe the Microsoft acquisition can breath some life into those greedy old bones. Anyway, super cool vid, enjoyed it all.

The only time I used a bot was way back then with Glider haha thanks for creating it haha though not sure if everyone is grateful :P I only ended up using it for a fairly short time, not because of a ban but more so the fear of ban and not being able to be in my guild on that account and it was also my main char cuz I was just an amateur guy who liked seeing some loot and gold in his inventory in the morning with plans to sell it to some website which I never ended up doing haha. I had fun with it! An option I haven't heard is how about if WoW had an idle part to it to where you would be able to to farm some extra stuff while asleep to discourage botting. So that during the day you can focus on other things or make some extra gold/mats if you still wanted to farm but this way more casual players don't have to grind all day to do a raid or something fun.

It wouldnt perhaps be a bad idea for blizz to implement some sort of "Player Paragon" system where a few knowledgeable + trustable players in each server are given a level 1 semi-GM level locked character that could TP to known bot locations + flag em for deletion, they'd then only need to hire a small handful of people to confirm those paragons actions, blizz could thank them with free subs and blizzcon tickets or something.

Runescape do something similar with Player moderators. Player moderators can mute people for 24 hours and when they flag bots their reports have higher priority. Even if you do have a captcha, great, it wouldn't be hard to detect with botting software that a captcha has been thrown up to the screen, and to quickly throw that screen over to the human bot wrangler. Lets say for a regular human, 1% of their in-game time is answering captchas - almost a full minute out of a 2 hour play session - great, that just means that 1 human can supervise 100 bots and answer their captchas. Does that raise the cost of botting? Yes, but not that much, given the countries it happens in. But how many people have you annoyed by throwing up pop-ups when they're themselves perhaps legally farming for gold for their own account?

WoW still one of the greatest games of all time though, the lore (for the most part), is fantastic, the game design, the adventure, a true testiment of community and creativity of the digital age. Nowadays playing mmo is like 100% more wasting time comparison to old days. In my case, I completely lose motivation to get something in the game when I know that others are getting by cheating or real money. There is so much of it around and even when a new mmo comes out, it's only a matter of time before bots will appear. I know its just stupid item pixel or materials but if you know what's going on around you, it's hard to enjoy also see Blizzard doesn't do anything to prevent it. I know it cannot be prevented but in wow case 3-10 game masters per realm spying and banning bots can do alot especially since most of the bots are in dungeons.The more that there is a subscription, if the bot would be banned in 2-3 days and not after 4 months like now , there would be much less of them

I actually was the sole owner of the entire glyph market on one of the EU servers back in the WotLK days having access to every single glyph out there. Gold was just flooding in. The cost to produce the glyphs each day was just a matter of getting the mats for a fraction of the price, once you had that sorted it was easy gold. Addons automated just about anything. I kept it legit but those were the fun days.

What blizzard should do is to hire the guy who invents these bots to tackle them down. Seen some games do that succesfully like runescape have done earlier for example. Great video!

I used to farm gold, and sell accounts. Up until cataclysm. My largest sale was 1500$, fresh max levels were 80-100$ and I was living decently alone. It was the community for. Where we farmer D2 gear and runes and sold them.

Towards the end of wotlk I lvl'd all my toons and maxed out my profs for cata, cause I didn't play wotlk, but while lvling in ice crown area, tons of people were farming by those cauldrons. I reported all of them everyday, and received a thank you letter in the mail from blizz, sometimes 3-4 a day.

If anyone honestly thinks Blizzard has ever made any actual attempt to stop botting or RMT, they simply lack the capacity for critical thought This is clearly a solved problem that they simply refuse to address, because they obviously benefit from ignoring it imo the biggest losers in all of this are the people buying gold, because I can think of countless better things to waste real money on than wow gold

At least I hope with cataclysm and raid difficulty ramping up guilds will have to adjust to more oldschool, dedicated group loot systems. Of course GDKP will keep existing for normal raids but for heroics no way pugs will be able to clear the hard bosses.

Its so funny. Some kids had to make it with what they had and I grew up in the mountains, so no Comcast. My parents still don't have internet to this day lol. The nostalgia looking back though, really brings me joy, it was such an adventure and a joy making friends late at night growing up in the cut. Those were the days my friend.

When I spent a lot of time in an internet cafe in China playing stuff like CS 1.6 which was huge there around the same time as WoW, I made friends with the owner and he had one of his friends approach me who owned a company that made game bots. He asked me to help him sell it on the Western marked and he couldn't believe it when I told him it's illegal there.

They don’t want it to “not be profitable for botters/goldfarmers” because they want them to purchase level boosts and game time. Blizzard is skimming their own profit out of the botting situation without trying to improve it because if they fix it, it costs them money and they make less.
@SashenkaKun

The amount of money blizzard makes off of those services is insignificant compared to revenue from just subs and expansion sales. Even games that are completely free to play have problems with botters and gold sellers. It's not an easy problem to fix and never has been.

most of the botters buy the gametime with botted gold in retail,or stolen credit cards,or by buying on cheaper countries currencies or they steal accounts. they are not full money customers. they dont profit that much,its that dealing with it is too big of cost
