Metal is a machine he can always come back as long as eggman saved his data. Metal has infinite lives as long as that back-up drive exists.

If sonic was smart he would track down where eggman has metals backup systems hidden. If he dustroys that then he kills metal.

I could see in a hypothetical Sonic Adventure 3/4 (if you wanna count Sonic 06 as Sonic Adventure 3) with 4 main characters being Sonic, Shadow, Silver, and Metal Sonic. Sonic is the traditional Sonic gameplay and story with him, Tails, and Knuckles stopping Eggman and whatever plan he has. Shadow is like his Sonic 06 counterpart and his story is him and Team Dark stopping s threat that is basically the same role as Black Doom or Mephiles, a threat of Ultimate power that Team Dark must stop. Silver could be him teleporting into Blaze's dimension in the past some time after Sonic Rush Adventure and he, Blaze, and Marine form a team to stop a future threat that is somewhat connected to Team Dark's evil, the Iblis to their Mephiles if you will. As for Metal Sonic, it could be a Metal Sonic that Eggman has deemed too unstable after his stunts in Heroes and any other appearances where he overthrows Eggman and decides to scrap him. However because Metal Sonic is based on Sonic he has free will, the same free will he showed in Heroes when he overthrew Eggman in the first place. So in act of free will, he decides to break out and become his own robot, finding a resurrected Gamma and a repaired Emerl that Eggman based Gemerl on in Advance 3. I think Metal would play like Sonic, but with a few new tricks. As for the other 2 possible teammates, Gamma plays like he did in Adventure and Emerl would be interesting considering his copy ability. Their story would be about self discovery with Gamma and Emerl teaching Metal about what they've learned.

Since Sonic Team hasn't really brought him up, really his last two major appearances were only in the Archie Comics and IDW Comics. Edit: Actually I like the Repaired Emerl thing better, but it could be either.

@Calamitic Butch. The reactivation and Upgrade of the Original Sonic CD Unit was show in Sonic 4 Episode Metal. But Andrew T isn't entirely right ether. The Metal from Knuckles Chaodix is beside the CPU that comes from the CD metal Sonic a completely new Robot. And both Metal Sonic's in Sonic Rivals are also completely different Robots that just like Metal 3.0 in Rivals 2 were created by Eggman Nega. But beside this is Metal otherwise always the original one from CD.
