Deep within the rugged valleys of Tasmania’s west coast , Lie the scenes of countless long forgotten gold rushes. Some of which, were nothing more than a short show, but others, others like the one we’ll be searching for today, were the start of a boom.
With the help of an old newspaper article I found from 1872 I’m off into the wilderness for an epic adventure to search for this location, which has been completely lost to time, along the way we’ll be able to relive some of the memories of the old timers, and discover the workplace of the these hardy men who called this place home over 150 year ago..

The big U-shaped frame you found is part of a horse-drawn slip scoop. A large shovel/scoop was mounted in the middle and dragged by a horse. When full of earth, it was flipper over to empty it by lifting the back end up , so the the front edge dug into the ground, flipping it over. That was how they would have cut the road in. Drag and tip, drag and tip. My dad used on up until the 80s to clean out dams, with a tractor instead of a horse.

Hi Rob. You are living my dream. Im 46 and live in a historically gold rich country. Its not too late for me. You are an inspiration. Thanks! Ps. Sadly it is illegal for the everyman to obtain or sell gold here and our prisons are some of the worst in the world.

Mr Thomas D Wragg led a fascinating life! He was an artist, draughtsman and engraver. His comment on the rapid removal of the Blackwood forest was quite prescient, in my humble opinion. Thomas drowned in the Cam River at Somerset 29 years later.

Both my hubby and I in our old age are going gold prospecting together. 4 years ago we were set ready to go until I got sick and soon getting an operation which will fix my illness in early August. After that we are going to head off to the goldfields in QLD to fossick. Just adore your family, and man, the work you put into the historical records and then finding the locations is amazing.
