During the Civil War, when Gen. James H. Wilson's cavalry corps passed through northeastern Alabama while en route to Selma, local residents were asked to conceal their home valuables by burying them in the ground, for fear of them being taken by the Union soldiers. Enjoyed watching your excitement at searching for old relics. Greetings from Israel.

My best finds were just north of Selma in maplesville. Lots of frustrating trash but its worth it everytime! Lots of arrowheads north of Selma too.

Good video! It's probably down there in the comments but I think your wiggle point is a lightening rod point because that weather vane is a lightening rod. They had glass balls on them. Maybe if you look around you can find the ground wire coming down to a ground rod. Thanks for showing us that cool house. Fish

I don't know, I've been spoiled. I got a late 1700's-1930's landfill in the woods right behind my house (built in 1837-1840) of my colonial New England backyard. Every 5 inches down every where I step and dig, I find antiques. And have amassed quite the collection over the last few years. Coins, bottles (mostly liquor and antiseptic remedies, they had major stomach issues back then, maybe from ALL the constant drinking they did to stay warm/cope with life's extreme hardships), fountain pens, auto memorabilia like metals decals, lamps, bottles, clay pipes, spark plugs, cigarette cases, porcelain figurines, toys, cap guns, even eye glasses with lenses (!), cast orin stove fronts, clay grain pots/jugs, clay plates and mugs, etc. Admittedly, having access to that extreme density (over a good 30 x 30 ft area) of "treasure" has made me watch videos like this, and be like "meh". I think that lack of signals left right all around in an open field or yard, makes even pull tabs and smushed thimbles seem exciting. But, Dude come by, there's more than enough to go around in that dirt stash. Literal colonial/turn of the century dump in my yard. Blows me away every time I dig, some ppl are all meh when I share this info, some ppl think it's cool as hell. But to some ppl trash apparently is trash, even if it's nearly 120 years old. But not to us.

Nice score on the site! Let me share a story. Five of us went to a farm that had a lot of history like your site. We detected for 8 hours that day. In the last 20 mins of light I found a single silver medieval coin. If I had not found that coin we may never have returned. We have returned many times since that first day and have recovered around 50 more coins and some amazing artefacts. Moral of the story I guess would be keep going back there mate. There is something special there somewhere ;)
@GENOBURRITO14 жыл бұрын
You would think that a place like that would hold a treasure trove of old coins and relics in the yard. But I've seen colonial coins dug out of parks and bottle caps and clad coins come up out of some of the oldest places you can find. Sometimes, it makes no sense. Your videos and narration are funny and enjoyable. Looking forward to more. New subscriber.

Thank you sir for this comment. I just had the most exciting hunt i ever had. My great grandfathers house is in my front yard and it was lived in by my grandfather and father. I have been detecting around in the yard for the last year. I found a few things but not alot. After reading your comment and just crawled under the porch and was finding all kinds of stuff. I got 6 older wheat pennies. 1 silver dime and my favorite is an 1888 Indian head penny! I gotta clean some metal junk out from under some spots and detect more later but i am off to a good start under there!

Reference the thimble, if they were farming they could have been sowing up sacks - thimbles are found all over the fields here in Europe.
@freemarketjoe98694 жыл бұрын
The thimble has definitely lost it's importance in a modern world flooded with cheap slave labor Chinese clothing. My mother actually sewed my sisters dresses back when i was a child in the 60's. She used thimbles and thread back then like we use microwaves now, as a daily necessity.
@dotcassilles14884 жыл бұрын
My mum and i use thimbles. We do alot of patchwork quilts. Its something to do when it gets cold, sit and sew and talk with others. Im slowly getting better and i aim to learn to sew my own clothes when i have made my first king size quilt. Its alot of sewing.

Don't know if you will see this comment but the strange, pointed thing is the tip on a lightening rod. They were attached to long brass rods that ran along the outside of the building. I have one exactly like it, including the odd bend in it. I got mine dumpster diving, when workers threw it away, while working on the exterior of the old boarding house on the street I lived on. The boarding house sat right in front of a railroad stop in a small town in Alabama. When I first moved there it still had the original blue glass globe that sat under the point. Vandals smashed it. The boarding house had the original carriage house sitting next to it until it burned down. Probably vandals, also.

OK Grasshopper - I really really enjoy all of your videos and want to help - - BUT - - you need to slow down some. Now maybe I am missing something but when you ground balance both the detector AND the carrot - make contact with the ground and then turn on the unit - leave it there [in contact with the ground] for a second or two. Move the carrot around S L O W E R. That works great for me. And since I have your attention - after you find whatever it is - check the hole s l o w l y again. If this fails to help - just disregard me - I'm old anyhow. Keep them coming.
@ExploringAlabama7 жыл бұрын
Ground balance should be done at the search height for the detector since you cannot always get close to the ground. For the point pointer you should balance in the hole I agree. I just rush so it's not so balanced at times. Thanks for watching

The most boring,,, stopping the video allows people to say they didn't find anything of value when they did. Property owners very often want what detectorists find, for themselves when valuable.I'm not saying you do that, but I video nothing. I keep my silver and gold finds. I use the proceeds to go towards my next wayoverpriced detector.
