I’m a character travel portrait photographer and the thing I always ask people not to do is to smile while I’m crafting the image. The smile is a mask that’s covering up the real person below. Another barrier we put up to protect ourselves. I also see it, as in your wife’s case, as a method of protecting others, to reduce your worry and stress. Amazing how complex a simple smile can be. It's a great song. I was on Sertraline (like in Chinchilla's opening line) and it gave me a very rare type of cancer which nearly killed me because I was misdiagnosed so many times. I have bipolar 1, and when my mood is low I hide behind a smile, not for my own benefit or to convey “hey, I’m doing ok, still hanging in there”. The smile is purely for other people, to make them feel better and believe everything is okay. It’s to take a load off of their mind, not mine.

Just subbed today, that smile of your wifes, i think its for her just as much as it is for you. I can be completely discouraged in pain and badically self deprecating and my wife can smile at me and i see her worry in her eyes, but that smile, it might not erase my pain or worry but its a much needed distraction from it if that makes any sense.
