In this, part one of a new series I'm doing called 'Metal Gear Solit', we'll be looking at literary influences on Hideo Kojima's tactical espionage action series, Metal Gear. We begin with arguably the most important one, George Orwell's NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR! Special cover of 'Theme of Solid Snake' by F1NG3RS.
Check out more of his jams here:
/ f1ng3rsmusic
Orwell's novel is notorious for being a cipher - an empty vessel, for any one reader to fill in with their own personal version of 'Big Brother'. So keep in mind everything I say here is just one way of reading not only Nineteen Eighty-Four, but in turn, also Metal Gear Solid.
Oh, and of course, the views and analysis of this video are my own - F1NG3RS was just nice enough to provide the awesome soundtrack for the opening and closing sequences!
"Nineteen Eighty-four, also published as 1984, novel by English author George Orwell published in 1949 as a warning against totalitarianism. The chilling dystopia made a deep impression on readers, and his ideas entered mainstream culture in a way achieved by very few books. The book’s title and many of its concepts, such as Big Brother and the Thought Police, are instantly recognized and understood, often as bywords for modern social and political abuses."
www.britannica.com/topic/Nine...
"The Metal Gear franchise follows the story of protagonist Solid Snake as he tries to rid the world of Metal Gears and atone for his sins. The Metal Gear series is well-known for its elaborate, complex plot-lines and large amount of cutscenes."

The party (and by extension, the Patriots AI) is a phenomenal example of a superstructure caught in a feedback loop. Whatever its initial purpose, the victories of its current devices of control reinforce its future ones, refines its methods, purifies and amplifies its purpose to the point of single-minded, self-serving purposelessness. Control for conrol's sake. The means justify the means. In many ways Big Boss' vision for Outer Heaven seems to follow a similar path. If Outer Heaven succeeded in recruiting every soldier in the world, it would undoubtedly end up fighting itself in never-ending battles of increasing purposelessness and fabricated factionalization, very much like we see in MGS4.
@Kinos141
@Kinos141 3 жыл бұрын
Nice. I would like to add that I always thought of Zero and Big Boss has men who didn't strive to find their own path. Both of them strived to realize the Boss's vision of a unified world, and both missed the mark, tearing down the world and nearly destroying it. It wasn't until Solid Snake came by and saved it by fighting for what he himself believed in. "We're not tools of the government or anyone else, fighting was the only thing I was good at, but at least I always fought for what I believed in."- Grey Fox last words

I'd like to see a piece on the easter eggs & comic relief stuff from throughout Kojima's works; things like Jonny from the Metal Gear series, the frogs & monkey side game in mgs3, etc. Things like Otacon's responses to some of the pictures you can take with the digital camera in the first part of mgs2 are gold. I feel like these lighthearted parts make Kojima's works much better. Hopefully other people would like to see this stuff too

Worth noting that David Bowie wanted his album "Diamond Dogs" to tell the story of 1984 but couldn't get the rights. Likewise Kojima wanted the title track from Bowie's "Diamond Dogs" to be the opening track of MgsV. Bowie was a prolific writer and one of Kojima's biggest influences that appear throughout his work. I highly recommend the podcast Death is Just Around the Corner. The host goes pretty deep into Bowie and post-ww2 events/literature. Kojima is never mentioned but it will definitely make you appreciate his work even more.

I'm kinda convinced Blackstar was at least a huge visual inspiration for Death Stranding.

Hell, just remember all those soldiers you fultoned from the combat, especially Russian ones. Lots of them, loyal to their people and country, and with a loving family and supportive friends back home. One day, suddenly, they get knocked out and promptly delivered by helicopter into a secret offshore platform somewhere in Africa. There, in that base (presumably Room 101 for extra points), _something_ is done to them so that in a matter of days or even _hours_ they give up completely about their entire former life and pledge their soul and existence to a charismatic yet seldom seen military leader, whom he loves like a father (as he loves the leader's other followers like brothers), enthusiastically lets him beat them and would gladly die for him.

So, any tips on how to extract the most in the most simple of ways?

The tapes for the most part is unnecessary information tbh and not needed to understand the story. The game is more so a retelling of 1984 and a warning like 1984 was. Theres a silent war going on most people haven't noticed or can even understand. Kojima just wants to let us know that what we see on the world stage really is political theater and the ones who control the story don't like regular people like us lol. I recommend you replay it on pc with mods and just enjoy the game and venom snakes story.
