I remember my disc being scratched and one of the last cutscenes just freezing the game. Only way to get past the freeze was to skip the cutscene. So I then went on KZfaq to watch the cutscene I missed. Oh boy was I not expecting a 25-30 minute cutscene waiting for me.

I thought it was pretty brilliant how the game went from the credits to the epilogue. The credit for Richard Doyle really shows up at just the right distance from the other names, and is on the screen just long enough so that you don't just write it off as a press-x cutscene that you missed. You really do start thinking "wait, Big Boss was in this game? When was that? Did I forge-" and then cuts to the last scene.

My interpretation of Snake's motivation in MGS4 is the same thing that drove him to come back from retirement in all of the other games. He has nothing else except for combat and being a soldier, because that is what he was created to do. It's mentioned in both Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, and Metal Gear Solid. It also puts a lot of what Big Boss tells him at the end of 4 into context, when he says to Snake "it's time to put down the gun." The fact that Snake continues to fight no matter what is obviously heroic, but it's ultimately self-destructive in every other aspect of his life to the point where he was going to kill himself for the sake of everyone else, and arguably what caused him to miss out on having the happily ever after ending that Meryl got in the end. But at least by putting down his gun, he will get to live out his final days doing whatever it is he wants, in this case traveling around the world to see the beginning of a new age without the Patriots, and no longer as a soldier.

In regards to the need to rerecord the voices for the Twin Snakes version, at 49:46. In a recent interview with a lot of the cast from the games (including David Hayter(Snake), Paul Eiding(Campbell), Tasia Valenza(Sniper Wolf) and Christopher Randolph(Otacon)). It was revealed how the recording process worked during the original recording for the PS1 version, where they had to record in a run-down house with almost no sound-proofing whatsoever, and because of the GameCube's increased performance they found out that when they imported the old audio files they realised that the GameCube picked up on a lot of extra sounds, even traffic outside the house. This resulted in the old files being unusable for the GameCube version and they had to rerecord it. The interviews were conducted by FraggedNation, KorruptRonin and YongYea, and you can see them on YongYea's channel.

It's sad that Konami rushed out MGS1 the way they did, imagine how much better it would have been if it had another year of dev time. After it sold gangbusters, they never questioned him again until V. Which was similarly rushed out due to the fallout between Kojima and the suits. Now they're gonna make a zombie shooter with re-used assets from V to finally do what Kojima spent 20 years preventing, pumping out shit games with Metal Gear in the title. After 4 and 5, and even PT, it's clear to see that the first 3 games were so great because of a collaborative effort between Kojima and the people he was creating with. He needs that collaboration, who the fuck do you bounce ideas off of when it's just you dictating? The missing staff member of 4 and 5 just so happened to write all the codec scripting of 1, 2 and 3 as well as co-writing the plot, the scenarios, everything. It ain't Shyruo Murata or whatever either, that dude is still there and continued to help write 4 and 5. It's the dude who's name starts with a T. The guy was clearly the yin to Kojima's yang, or vice versa. If you need more convincing that this collaborative effort was key to the mastery of 1, 2 and 3 look no further than the "codec" use in 4, 5 and even Peacewalker.

There is still choice but the choice is to help the rebels or just to move on.

Mild spoilers for MGSV: 45:27 I thought it was really, really stupid how the Cobra Unit's powers were retroactively explained in MGSV as being the result of parasites. Did parasites let The Fury become a giant flaming head too? Was The Sorrow's ghost infected with parasites as well? What about Volgin? Electric parasites? Honestly it seemed like a needless explanation to a question nobody was asking, and it barely even makes sense within its own universe. "Parasites" were literally just the "Nanomachines" of the 80s, used as cheap all-purpose plot hole fillers :/

The great thing about MGS is that each game is so unique to itself that depending on which fans you ask the good/best games in the series are always different. Some people say 1 and 3 are the only good ones, some (like me) think the series only got better and better, some hate 4, some love 4, the only one that people seem to agree on the most is the first one being good. It makes talking with other fans a real treat that you don't get with a lot of series. My favorite is still 4 but its not like I could argue if your favorite is 1 or 2 or 3. This is an interesting review because another person could spend the same amount of time reviewing the same game and say only positives about everything you talk about.

Actually, there was a trick with Raven. It's entirely possible to wait until her wings or whatever overheat and she has to land. You can then use a sniper rifle to inflict massive damage on her while she's still. This is, in fact, the easiest way to defeat her non-lethally, by using the Mosin Nagant in this way.

I never liked the fact Meryl came back in 4. I always thought her dying was the canonical ending of MGS1 since you didn't see her in 2 and because Snake and Otacon were working together. In fact, the first time I played 2 I was shocked but also impressed. Her death being canon meant that Snake, despite his badassness, still failed in some respect and had weakness, which also made him more human. Not to mention it was just another ballsy move by Kojima. I swear she was just retconed back to life and that cheapens the emotional impact of the first game. I was very disappointed.

DaManHibiki ! While the absence of Tomokazu Fukushima shouldn't go unnoticed, I find the reason for the decline in the narrative more likely to be Hideo Kojima's simply been disinterested in the series for a long time. There are hints all over the place that 4 wasn't even supposed to happen, and V is just uninterested in itself. I wonder if there's some ambiguous meaning to the line "why are we still here".

I would just like to say something about Naomi being both an amazing geneticist and programmer. There is actually a decent possibility that someone who was an expert geneticist might also be an expert programmer. If you've heard the term "bioinformatics" thrown around, it's a field that is basically a combination of genetics and programming (it doesn't necessarily have to be genes/DNA, can also be protein stuff or any other biological data, but that isn't important). These days, we have so much DNA sequence data available to us, but it's such an astounding amount of data that we can't make much sense of it without help from computers. Historically, biologists didn't need to do much computer stuff beyond some Statistics programs. But now, there's increasing demand for biologists who also have a lot of experience/knowledge about more complex computer programming. It's not unreasonable to think that one of the best geneticists might also be an excellent programmer, because having both of those skills puts them at an advantage. That being said, I don't know how the knowledge of computer programming for the sake of genetics would be related to knowledge of making computer viruses. But I don't know much about computer stuff, I'm solidly on the biology side of things. So basically, even though your point is totally valid (and I think the writers probably made her a badass and weren't thinking this far into it), I just wanted to give a reason why computers and biology can have quite a lot of overlap these days.

Indeed. Kojima is a very aware, sensitive, and intelligent man. We're talking about the guy who retired the Colonel Campbell character because his Japanese voice actor died. Kojima is absolutely not ignorant to the impact Hayter's voice had on his series in English-speaking countries, or to the fact that Hayter's voice is a major reason why Snake became a household name in gaming circles after Metal Gear Solid. Hayter is probably the second most recognizable voice actor in video game history, behind only Mario's Charles Martinet. It wouldn't make any sense at all for Kojima not to include Hayter in the final canonical game in the series as it closes the circle on the entire story by finishing up the events between Peace Walker and the original Metal Gear, and it would be outright disrespectful to Hayter to not allow him to be involved in the series he had a big hand in making so famous in other parts of the world due to his unique voice acting. The only logical reason they would possibly have to not use Hayter as Big Boss in MGSV is that Hayter will be appearing in the game as Solid Snake himself because they obviously can't have Hayter playing both Big Boss and Snake in the same game since they have virtually identical voices with only subtle differences. I'm calling it now: Snake will appear in MGSV, likely near the end of the game in a surprise cameo leading up to the events of Metal Gear original, voiced by Hayter. Not only does logic point to this for anyone who knows how sensitive, respectful, and aware Kojima is to social matters and to the pulse of his fans all over the world, but there is some evidence leading to this conclusion as well. First, it was never said that Hayter won't be in MGSV outright; all that was stated was that he would not be returning as Big Boss. Second, not long after that announcement Hayter made some vague tweets about his voice being tired with some winking emoticons, hinting that he was doing some voice work. Third, the announcement of Big Boss' new voice actor being Kiefer Sutherland was made right around the time of all the bizarre "Joakim Mogren" and "Moby Dick Studios" antics, with a lot of attention being drawn to the mo-cap Sutherland did for the character. This is highly unusual for a Metal Gear game, as in the past all mo-cap was done by Japanese actors. This all makes it highly suspect of being a purposeful coverup to distract people from the truth behind the scenes and to drum up controversy, which Kojima knows very well helps draw sales and media coverage since all attention, good or bad, is beneficial for marketing. Fourth, people point to Hayter specifically saying that he will not be in MGSV when pressed for questioning by fans and media sources, and it's important to keep in mind that Kojima has flat-out lied to the public about details in his games during pre-release press coverage in the past, especially with MGS2 and the Raiden bait-and-switch. As deeply connected with the Metal Gear series that Hayter has been for so long, it's not a stretch at all to think he could very well be in on it with Kojima and may be lying to the public in order to cover up the truth so the surprises in The Phantom Pain will be that much greater and unexpected when we play the game for ourselves. Kojima has been playing the public since MGS2, to make his messages sink in even more by treating us the same way the Patriots treat the population of the Metal Gear universe. He lies to us, feeds us false information, and drums up controversies to distract people from seeing through to the truth of things, all to teach us lessons about how to catch bullshit and how to find the hidden truth behind the circus act of the media. He's transcending the video game/real life gap by putting us through the same kinds of things the Patriots do in his games so his message may hit more close to home, sink in, and make more of an impact on the actual lives of his fans since he is making them not only play that experience in the games, but truly live it outside of the games, too. Consider this new controversy about Kojima and his team effectively becoming ghosts around Konami and all its various media outlets, with his name being wiped from everything it was once attached to. Kojima is practically the sole reason Konami is as successful as it is, and his Metal Gear series is the company's primary cash cow. Without his contributions, Konami wouldn't be half of what it is today, and they know that. Does anyone honestly believe Konami would wipe Kojima out unless this were all a part of Kojima's pre-release controversy buzz to get the game more attention and to fool the fans? Hell, look at all the theming we've seen in MGSV's press so far, and in Ground Zeroes itself. One of the game's taglines has been "Those who don't exist," correlating with Kojima suddenly "not existing" anymore. One of Ground Zeroes' missions involve the player erasing the logos of all the Metal Gear games Kojima made himself off of surfaces, also alluding to Kojima being "erased." This is likely a lot of foreshadowing of the theming and events to come in The Phantom Pain. Konami erasing Kojima would be as stupid, disrespectful, and uncalled for as Kojima erasing Hayter would be, and these two events feel like very similarly-themed marketing ploys to me, all to drum up more confusion and controversy around the game which give it more press coverage and make people more interested in it and news about it. Konami isn't going to get rid of Kojima any more than Kojima is going to get rid of Hayter. I believe Kojima is playing us like his own real-life game of Metal Gear, and he wants to leave a permanent mark upon the world when he launches his Metal Gear and drops the bomb on us that is The Phantom Pain. When we dropped nukes on Japan, they were brutal and unexpected. Not only were they dropped in revenge (which is one of the main themes of MGSV by Kojima's own word, along with race, and everyone knows racism had a lot to do with the politics of dropping those bombs, as evidenced by all the propaganda and racist cartoons in the U.S. against the Japanese at the time), but they were meant to end things, and this game is meant to finally end things for the series. Kojima's been fighting a war of his own since MGS2, trying to put an end to things. This game will end his war. It will be the nuke that he never wanted to drop (since he wanted to stop making Metal Gear games since MGS2 and after every game in the series since) but feels he's been backed into a corner with no other choice than to finish what he started. He's stated that this game will be much more controversial than any of his past work, and that it will tackle issues that may lose him his job if things don't go well, which tells me his message this time is going to be far more brutal and honest than it ever was in his games to this point. Sometimes you don't want to be brutal, but you get backed into a tight enough corner that you feel there's no other way out. MGSV will be Kojima's reluctant nuke that finally ends his war.

EBsessor Timeline-wise, I'm pretty sure that Phantom Pain will end around the time that the very first Metal Gear game takes place, right? So it shouldn't be impossible or far-fetched for Hayter's Snake to make a (brief?) appearance in the game, towards the end. Much along the same lines as Big Boss in MGS4, perhaps. That said though, Big Boss (and some of his clones) haven't always been voiced by David Hayter. With Metal Gear Solid 4 being one example, and Metal Gear Solid 2 (Solidus) being another. Anyway, I do agree. I'm pretty sure that Kojima isn't as heartless as to push Hayter aside like that, when Hayter means as much to the fans as he does. But only time will tell.
@L33PL4Y
@L33PL4Y 9 жыл бұрын
Hayter's never had anything to do with the clones. He's only ever been Big Boss and Snake himself. And the only time Big Boss was NOT voiced by Hayter was because both Snake and Big Boss had voice roles in the same game, and I already explained above that the only reason Big Boss wouldn't be voiced by Hayter in MGSV is if Snake appears in the same game voiced by Hayter, ala MGS4.
@kakamana1000
@kakamana1000 9 жыл бұрын
EBsessor I feel Kojima missed a trick to handle the Hayter situation in a much more plausible and 'fan-friendly' manner. Hayter should have been the voice of Big Boss in 'Ground Zeroes' and later replaced by Kiefer Sutherland in 'The Phantom Pain'. The change could be explained away by Big Boss's 9 year coma...

It's telling, that in a game where you have Ocelot seriously doing finger-guns at people and running away like Daffy Duck, the stupidest moment involves Meryl and Johnny's romantic antics. There are so many things I enjoy about MGS4, but man, Johnny was insufferable.

The strategy guide for MGS4 has a whole text retelling of all 4 games and explains that there was never really Liquid Ocelot, it was all a ruse from Ocelot to become the villain in the eyes of the Patriots and he knew they would send Snake to stop him and he knew that Snake would be able to take out the Patriots because they would be too focused on stopping Liquid. Turns out it was possible for this game to get even more confusing.

One big detail you can't deny was great in the big boss reveal was that Snake initially raises his gun and tries to fight him because when he last saw big boss he was the bad guy in metal gear 2, damn good consistency if you ask me.
@coolman229
@coolman229 9 жыл бұрын
Consistency? I think there's an awful lack of consistency in MGS4. Snake raising his gun at Big Boss is hardly difficult to understand and nothing to applaud. It's pretty obvious why he would raise his gun at Big Boss. If you want to talk about consistency then let's talk about Naomi in MGS4.
@fwwaller
@fwwaller 9 жыл бұрын
"hardly difficult to understand" How do you figure? What exactly is suspicious about another guy in a cemetery with you that would justify you raising your gun and attacking him? He tried to kill Big Boss because the last time he saw him was when they fought each other at the end of Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake. I don't see any other reason that would justify that reaction. What about Naomi?
@coolman229
@coolman229 9 жыл бұрын
fwwaller Well when that guy looks just like Big Boss, sounds like Big Boss, and carries The Patriot it's not hard for snake to figure out it's Big Boss. Any fan of the series knows that the last time Snake saw Big Boss was when he set him on fire at the end of Metal Gear 2. It's not special. Snake has even mentioned this in later games, specifically in MGS where he tells Naomi that he killed Big Boss. You make it sound like Big Boss was some obscure character. If you wanted to talk about that then why not talk about Dr. Madnar who was last seen trying to kill Snake....who's mentioned by Raiden with no reaction from Snake. Yay consistency. Naomi was a geneticist. She made FOXDIE. Yet in MGS4 we're suddenly supposed to buy that she's a super hacker nanomachine expert all the way back to MGS? No way. There is no explanation and this makes absolutely no sense. This is literally impossible and it's a significant retcon to her character.
@fwwaller
@fwwaller 9 жыл бұрын
Okay, I'll give you that, Snake's apathy towards Dr. Madnar being name dropped was strange. Foxdie was an artificially made virus designed to target nano machines. Why is it so far fetched to believe that in the 9 years between MGS1 and MGS4 she could've become way more educated on the nano machines? It's not literally impossible, at least not any more so than all of the insane crap that's happened in all the other Metal Gear games.
@coolman229
@coolman229 9 жыл бұрын
fwwaller No no no no. She was NEVER involved with nano machines. That's the point. FOXDIE targeted specific DNA and caused a heart attack in that person. Naomi explains this sometime in MGS. It's why Liquid is killed but Snake is fine. She was very explicitly a geneticist due to her not knowing who her parents were. She designed FOXDIE and even set it to target Snake. Her being a nanomachine expert was something completely new that was never part of her character. The nanomachines being involved is more MGS2 and 4. Metal Gear has always been strange but for at least games like MGS1 it tried to root it's characters in something consistent and real (a reason why they worked so well). Saying that Naomi was a geneticist and then was also a nanomachine expert all that time without any mention is what's impossible. It contradicts previous canon.

I bought the legacy edition a month ago and finished mgs4 yesterday and I have to say that it was awesome all the way through because even the mgs1 cutscenes were awesome and felt like movies. Overall the cutscenes and codec conversations never failed to entertain and pull me deeper into the storylines and characters. Sorry but I just can't understand why so many people hate the length of the cutscenes since they turn the games into real movie-videogame hybrids.

Ok so yes, MGS 4 was stuffed full of fan service, and fan service can be a very bad thing because its typically very gimmicky. But I was a massive fan of MGS 1. Solid Snake was my all time favorite game character and it had been ten years since that magical game, so the fan service really brought a smile to my face while playing 4. It honestly felt good to be catered to, especially considering at the time I thought this was going to be the last MGS game ever.

I'm conflicted about this game because it gives people permission to trivialize MGS2 and discount the VR theory, but it is a better end to the forward progression of the series than MGS2 would have been. Part of me wants to see a rewrite of MG1 and 2, but that would probably fall prey to worse issues than even this game does.
@L33PL4Y
@L33PL4Y 9 жыл бұрын
No way. If anything needs a rewrite, it's this game. MGS1 and 2 were perfect because they were the games Kojima WANTED to make. He didn't want to make this game, he only did it because he was fearing for his life from all the death threats he was being sent by his "fans." That's why this one came out forced, empty, and contrived, because he was only doing what he thought would appease the people who were wishing him dead if he didn't.

I get it man, but I think the ending to this game finishes off the series in a more satisfying way than MGS2 did. I love MGS2, but a lot of people don't, and I can kind of see their point. As far as remakes go I was talking about the original 2d metal gear games. I think the idea of big boss as a reclusive dictator deserves a better story, but it would have to deal with a lot of sequel baggage, which is a large part of what sunk MGS4.

Raiden gets not only the same ending as Snake in MGS1 but the same ending he himself already got in MGS2: Freedom to choose his own life, except as with everything in MGS4 now it's about the canon. In MGS1 Snake's freedom also mirrors that of the player's as they leave the video game where they are confined to do things in the order the game decides them to, and the same with MGS2 where Raiden much like the player was manipulated by the Patriots who are analogous to the developers to act almost as a puppet in their plans until he breaks loose as the game ends.

Christian Hansen You mean the twist that exposes Big Boss as a despicable hypocrite and totally brings his character full circle? I mean, the story of TPP isn't great (or terribly present) by any means, but that twist is _so_ much smarter than people give it credit for, and not even in the cute player-referencing way, but in a character way. In fact, that twist is so good, it almost justifies the existence of games set between MGS3 and MG1, which still stand as largely unnecessary. I think if he were to "trash" the game for any reason, it'd be the fact it's both a) incomplete, and b) stuffed with filler to appear like a much larger game than it is.

Just like Hideo Kojima tried to tie up all the ends in the MGS story, you touched upon more or less everything there is to talk about in this game. I have a soft spot for MGS4. MGS4 empowered me as a player with its control scheme probably more than any other game I've ever played except for Mario 64, which I would consider it's equal in regards to controls. Both of those games made me feel like I was in complete control of my character and both gave me such a huge amount of options that I could express my creativity through game play. The most satisfying experience I've ever had gaming came when I spent a summer getting the Big Boss Rank on this game. The sheer difficulty forced me to become adept in the entirety of Snake's move set, which I hadn't done with either MGS2 or 3. Watching my own game play with a mastery of the move set, I felt as though I was experiencing Metal Gear the way it was meant to be experienced for the first time. Watching Solid Snake expertly weave through enemy lines without so much as peaking the interest of a guard made me understand just how elite of a solider Snake is. It was one of the first times I felt as though the game play of a video game conveyed a narrative as opposed to the cut scenes, which is especially ironic considering the main criticisms of the game. I think this is the most underrated game of all time and an all-time great.

"And the entire cast of MGS3 exist in a time before nanomachines could be used to explain everything." Oh boy, not anymore Matt. MGSV confirmed that nanoma-I mean PARASITES were used by the Cobra dudes.

+George Moose I only vaguely remember that tape; did it include The Sorrow, who is a ghost? Or The Fury, who is fire, one of the Parasites' marked weaknesses?

***** The Fury might seem to have only some gadgets at first, but what about his death, where his spirit flew around as a flaming head? I agree that ghosts and supernatural abilities are a natural thing in the mg universe. My whole problem is with MGS4 and V feeling the need to demystify all of it with nanomachines and parasytes.

+TheKnightguard1 NANOMACHINES and PARASYTES are the MGS universe version of midichlorians. It's a pointless explanation for something that never needed explaining.
@TheKnightguard1

***** To be technical, midiclhlorians are a little worse. At least nanomachines were introduced to explain something. Midichlorians, intermediaries between humans and the force, aren't even attached to a question that somebody was asking.

Love your videos Matthew, Missed opportunity when you mention screaming mantis and the second controller port, I do believe that changing the controller allocation through the PS3's controller manager earns you a special dialogue from otacon. Also, I'm eagerly awaiting any sort of content from you regarding MGSV, to me its an unfinished work that could have easily been the strongest entry ever gameplay wise. And the worst offense story wise. I would also like to know if you have played, enjoy or have ever considered making videos about the Mother series, for some reason they strike me as games that you would particularly enjoy a good deal, cheers!

15:53 A lot of MGS2 was really nerf'd because of budget issues, and the fact that it came out right after 9/11. So that whole scene where Arsenal crashes into New york, and the people walking around acting like don't even notice it, as opposed to everyone looking concerned and worried, is because Kojma didn't want people to find it distasteful. I'm not sure if people back then would have immediately drawn the connection of that scene if they left it in, but it really sliced the game in two not including it.

***** I always kind of wondered why there wasn't a sort of 9/11 tribute included at the end of MGS2. The game took place in New York, and was released just 3 months after the attacks.
