Mick actually did a GDC talk about how they made the DOOM OST, and while yes they did go back on the "no guitars" rule, we wouldn't have gotten the bizarre, glitchy, distorted electronic sound without that initial call. It was that request that made him create the "DOOM Instrument", which is basically a bunch of audio equipment he feeds sine waves through until it distorts and screams, which he then uses for the electronic portions. The guitar and drums was what completed the brutal, chaotic, and predatory feel of the soundtrack. Honestly it's a really interesting watch if you've got an hour, would recommend.

@@nuggs4snuggs516 : Agreed, normally I'm not into TED talks, long speeches without gameplay at a gaming convention, etc. But Mick was extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and engaging throughout that whole hour, answering folks' questions and providing background info to the creative process. The id team were smart to hand over music control to him and let him be "comfortable with failure" as he put it. Anytime you have a boss that encourages you to do better instead of putting you down when you fail? That's a job worth holding on to, and he rolled with it and made some kick ass soundtracks.

I wish you people would stop saying this because you're completely missing the point of Id telling Mick not to use guitars. It was because Id didn't want _Doom 2016's_ soundtrack to sound like any other metal soundtrack; they wanted it to be unique and special. They wanted Mick to experiment. It was only after Id was happy with what Mick had come up with that they allowed him to use guitars again. It's precisely *because* Id told Mick not to use guitars in the beginning that the soundtrack ended up as mind-meltingly awesome as it did.

Don't stop with just BFG Divison. While it is the standout track, the rest of the game's soundtrack is more of this. Doom's soundtrack is so metal there are literally pentagrams and 666 in audio spectrograms of some of the tracks. Doom Eternal is more of the same. They literally hired a chorus of metal singers for the soundtrack. I'm super stoked Mick Gordon's new album dropped with a free game.

Fun fact about a lot of the DOOM soundtrack: A lot of these looping/repeated sections can be played in various orders in game. The game itself will react to what the player's doing - with the heavier bits playing as the player gets into more intense sections and moving back to the interludes as the player is between "stress" moments. So you always get the intense chorus right as you're kicking the most ass.

The songs in Doom 2016 are made of verse-, chorus- and bridge-like parts which are played in the game depending on what's happening, picking a random choice from 10-20 variations. The tracks Mick Gordon compiled as OST are just the showcase. As for effects and sh*t: there's a 4-chain patch which makes "the Doom™ sound" from low sine waves, the Soviet synthesizer (that piano keyboard in the vid) used for weird sounds, and a higher notes after riffs is a morph of guitar and chainsaw sound from original Doom.

i recommend you his conf about him making the music of Doom 2016. It's all in fun little details and great humour. Oh, and by all means, check out Killer Instinct OST, and the latest doom. You're going to have a blast

One of the best things about the soundtracks for Doom and Doom Eternal is that the soundtracks are not constant full-on intense brutality, but often drop into the background to provide atmosphere. So if You're wandering through the hallways trying to find your way forward, the music is atmospheric and subdued, maybe a little suspenseful, and when you get into a skirmish, the music bumps up a notch, but when you get into a full-on massacre, the music kicks up to 11. And it all perfectly complements the slaughter-fest that is Doom, as you rip and tear until it is done!

Fun fact, the riff at 6:40 is a heavily modified version of the Doom 1 soundtrack, Waltz of the Demons: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e7qGbMmB0s_Jf4E.html.
