If someone were to ask me "What was 80's metal like?" I'd hand them my copy of 'Under Lock And Key'. That album is perfection. It's got everything: Amazing vocals, guitar wizardry, and catchy as fuck songs that'll be stuck in your head indefinitely. It's got everything in spades. One of my top 3 favorite albums of all time.

@@LorriSanga Well, because you asked so very nicely, I'll give you my top FIVE favorite albums! However, I always say my favorite album (or movie, book, etc.) is likely one I have yet to discover. So with that said, here's my top 5: 1- Carpenters- A Song For You Weren't exactly expecting that, were you? I could listen to Karen Carpenter sing the menu of a Chinese take out restaurant. Spectacular album with a ton of beautiful songs. I believe Alice Cooper once said "If you look through any metalheads record collection, you'll probably find a Carpenters album in there" and sunuvabitch if he ain't right. And speaking of The Coop... 2- Alice Cooper -Billion Dollar Babies I think this was the best one of the original Alice Cooper Band and it's one I listen to all the time. I never get tired of it. 3- Dokken -Under Lock and Key Nuff said. 4 - Opeth - Blackwater Park I'm not a big death metal guy, but there is something about Opeth that hooks me right in. Back in 01, the two metal albums I remember hearing the most buzz about was this one and Iced Earth's Horror Show. Both I picked up and instantly loved, but Opeth to this day is one of my favorite bands and Blackwater Park was my gateway. 5- Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction A seminal moment in my adolescence was hearing Symphony of Destruction on the radio. That riff kicked me square in the nuts and I was all in after that. I had a chance to meet Dave Mustaine and told him that exact thing, which he replied "Uh, I'm sorry about that..." So that's my top five, what's yours? I'd love to know!

Dokken was never false metal or poseurs. And they were never a glam band. They were a very talented heavy rock band with their own style that swayed between melodic rock/metal ie breaking the chains to just blistering straight forward metal ie tooth and nail. They had one of rocks better guitarist during that era along with dons unique voices and wrote songs that were more than just partying They started off struggling and clawed their way to the top ie the title tooth and nail. Anyone who dismisses Dokken as just another 80's glam/hair band is ignorant.

Well said and as the 50 somethings reflect Dokken was by far the finer taste of " 80s Metal" and I'd say at this most realize can now say with the resounding realization that Dokken was the finest band of this particular genre and moment in time.

Unfortunately, Dokken went with management that pointed them to the next glam trend when doing photo shoots or album covers. The reality is they never dressed or looked glam the five or six times I saw them in the '80s. The only one who really did was Pilson and not to any extreme. Don would typically dress in black or denim. As Don has said, he wished they would have gone with Q-Prime who basically didn't promote a band on how they dressed or looked.

Back For The Attack album was/has been highly admired by Japanese Dokken fans. I am one of them. They created invincible metal music with harmony of good melody and sharp guitar sound that no other bands can. Fortunately the friction between Don and George worked positively. What if they had kept making albums? I'm pretty sure that many fans wish so.

I don't comment much on KZfaq. I just had to chime in and give you credit where credit is due. I graduated high school in 1988 and Dokken was "my band". Many an insane party was had with numerous Dokken CDs being played front to back. I was also a very serious musician back then. You appear to be in your 20's, and thus roughly half my age. I'm a fairly critical and argumentative person, and I can't believe I agreed with everything you said. It was a very pleasant and refreshing experience. First off, I want to congratulate you on your taste in music. Grunge DID really suck for the dark and depressing reasons you expressed, and it feels really good to hear a YOUNG person come out and declare it so loudly and articulately. As such, congratulations on being so toungue-twistingly eloquent. That's not easy to do, and I appreciate it. I gotta mention you have some of the funniest and verbose uses of profanity I've ever heard! Hilarious! I even learned a few things (which I wasn't expecting, as that generally seems to happen so rarely these days) so congratulations on your stellar knowledge as well. Finally and most importantly, congratulations on making a such a entertaining and high-value video. Godspeed, bro!

I graduated High School in 1984 so you could say I grew up on Dokken, Their best album ( By Far) was Tooth & Nail ( If only they would have spent some money on the Production side of that album) but the set of songs were the best set of songs Dokken ever produced for an Album. Don't Close Your Eyes" is awesome. Then they went all " Top40" with Under Lock & Key and it went downhill from there fast, although Back For The Attack had some cool stuff on it, and it held the best riff George Lynch ever wrote in " Kiss Of Death". But, you also have to remember, back then, if you were in a band and you had hair longer than your shoulders, you were considered Metal ( Or at least hard rock) no matter what you played. Bands like Autograph were lumped in with Ronnie James Dio and Black Sabbath

Under Lock and Key was another awesome album, oh hell they all were. I absolutely loved Back for the Attack, kudos for mentioning Kiss of Death... Jesus there was nothing wrong with this music. Having older sisters and no brothers I got to hear all of the 'hair metal' bands during the 80's and I don't regret it one bit. My youngest sis had all of Dokken's albums and their VHS tape. I was too young to 'indulge' in 80's but still got to hear the soundtrack of good times. Today everyone takes shit way too seriously and it's hard to truly have a good time without encountering our modern police state so I envy anyone that knew what partying and fun was during the 80's. Grunge happened by the time I was in high school but it's still better than today's lifeless music.

This video was an extraordinary gift. Dokken was the band that turned me on not only to metal, but to music itself. "Under Lock and Key" was the first cassette I ever purchased (with paper route earnings!) in 1986, when I was a lad of 13. I was moderately stunned to hear you proclaim your adoration for "Will the Sun Rise"; until today, I'm the only person I've ever heard express that sentiment. Lynch's work in that piece still gives me goosebumps, to this day. With all the bands I'd subsequently fall in love with over the next three decades, Dokken has remained in my day-to-day playlist, and for good reason. The reason why this video was such a gift, though, is that I never realized that the full lineup released *two more albums* after Beast From the East. As I type this, "Dysfunctional" is downloading to my phone; "Shadowlife" will be next (no matter how bad it is!). I was devastated when my favorite band broke up just as I'd started high school, and until now, had never known that they'd issued any more music. As I've entered that age where I've become particularly nostalgic for things from my childhood, the opportunity to hear, for the first time, music from one of my favorite bands that I thought was gone forever... Man. What a treat. Thanks so much for this.

To be honest, two of the biggest bands in grunge, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, still rocked very metal vocalists in Layne Staley, who along with Jerry Cantrell, produced some very metal melodies, and Chris Cornell, who, much like Mother Love Bone, would have sounded at home belting power ballads, all of which I always found ironic.
@TheRangePlace

LiquidDIO Chris Cornell was a freaking metal vocalist back in his prime. Listen to 'Louder Than Love' or 'Badmotorfinger' and try to deny that. Same applies to Layne, agreed. IF I may interject on this subject.....George Lynch HAD the Ozzy gig after Randy's death....And then came Jake E. Lee. Sharon saw and heard Jake, and wanted Jake because "He HAD the LOOK". Ya gotta rememember in EARLY 82, Lynch still had that shoulder length spiked kinda "punk style" hairdo, and Sharon (OF COURSE) thought Jake would be a better fit for the OZZY band so....? Unfortunately, George Lynch was fired because the "Ozzy camp" discriminated the man because of his friggin hair style......THIS IS what George Lynch told me personally anyways, and many other people at a local guitar clinic years back. Plus, I have read about in fairly well documented stories from ex -Ozzy members memoirs. Typical Sharon Osbourne BS.........

Dokken, such a great band, why they get the hate because of "hair metal" is just stupid as hell. Don Dokken is a helluva vocalist. First time I heard Dokken was in the mid 2000's, I was listening to Dee Snider's House of Hair on the radio, and first heard Breaking The Chains, and later on songs like Unchain The Night, Dream Warriors, Alone Again, etc. Great guitar work, great vocals, catchy songs. Fucking awesome. Got most of their discography, missing some of the later stuff, including Shadow Life (while it's awful, I did somewhat enjoy a song or 2, to a point) and listen to them from time to time. It's just sad that there is so much drama between Lynch and Dokken. Plus Lynch has a ridiculous ego. Lynch is very talented, I even like Lynch Mob but compared to Dokken? Well we know who is better. Don Dokken's Up From The Ashes is a great album, I found it on CD, like 6 years ago at a garage sale, brand new for $1. I about shit myself, and bought it. Great video!
