I'm so glad social media did not exist when I was 14/15 (which is, ahem, 30 years ago) and I started discovering Black Metal. No one would put corpsepaint on unless they were in a band going on stage or doing promo photos. It was something you did to enhance the performance and atmosphere of the gig. A few years later it was only fans of Cradle of Filth that put corpsepaint on for gigs, and they were laughed at by everyone else....

@@off6848 in my opinion, corpse paint have to look shitty to be trve. If you spend an hour in front of the mirror making it all clean, you are no different from any glam band. Just smear some white and black on your face, and try to make it look like that you are an actual corpse. Sablast did a great video on this topic.

Almost all of them that made it out the Norwegian hood eventually got more detailed gimmicks when the cash flow

I'm gonna have to disagree with most comments bc I'm not really mad at these kind of tiktoks 🤷🏻‍♀️ most of them are kids just trying to have fun, and yeah probably most of the ones doing corpse pain aren't really into black metal but it's just makeup. I for one don't like black metal that much but I think doing corpse paint is great. It's not that I do it everyday to record tiktoks but I've done it a couple of times for photos and stuff. Everyone can have their opinions ofc but honestly I don't think that metal TikTok is that bad or that deep🤷🏻‍♀️

Those tiktoks are the reason why im afraid to shown people my music taste. I mean, I am 14. I do listen to black and death metal, but i don't go around telling everyone. That's unecessary, cringe, unfunny and ridiculous. BUT, by these people's fault i can't say "i like black/death metal" without being called a poser or some shit like this. Also, it's not a trend for me. I've been listening to stuff like this since I was 11. Furthermore, my music taste is not summed up on metal. I like rock, pop, j-pop and a lot of other genres. My personality is not based on metal. PS: sorry for bad english, im brazilian

black metal opened a new world for me. I used to only listen to heavy metal (mostly thrash) abd I hated everything else. One day I found BM, I fell in love and I became a cringe elitist for a while. Few years passed, and now I pretty much listen to everything, pop music included. The passion from bm music made me appreciate music more.

For me, face paint went out in around 1999, once I was no longer a teenager! Once Emperor discarded the make-up I realised that the music would always be the important part of it, face paint has long since lost its original meaning and I was about 14 when I was getting into black metal back in the early 90s, but I'll be 43 soon and all I care about now is aural evil and/or epicness!

OMG this reminds me of a 16-17 yo me showing off my corpsepaint on a KZfaq video and randos commenting that I suck 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I 'm 31 now. I guess Tik Tok is the evolution of that same thing. I feel ancient, but this also seems so familiar. We were all kids once and I was genuinely proud of showing off my new music tastes and my appearance at that age. Anyway, the difference between gen z and us before though is that we were part of a "subculture" and kids these days are part of an "aesthetic".

Honestly as someone who is a part of gen z I 100% agree with you and although I don't know as much as other people when it comes to bm (as I am barely starting to get into it) I truly enjoy it for what it is not because I want to appear a certain way to others. Many ppl my age that claim to be "alternative" are only trying to appear that way to fit an aesthetic and many don't listen to the music in specific subcultures. This goes for goth, grunge, metal, emo, and many others. I could see why older generations would not like mine tbh lol.

I would like to think not but I don’t really know. I feel kind of bad for these kids nowadays because technology has really fucked up their lives and they don’t even know it. I don't know, I think if Tiktok existed when I was young people would have used it too. Back then we had fun recording some kind of funny shit on audiocassettes or on VHS... in principle it's not much different than what's done today. And if we could have uploaded it somewhere back then, we certainly would have done it... Times are changing and entertainment is changing too, and today's Tiktokers probably won't understand what their kids will be up to in the future!

How has technology fucked up their lives? The previous generation, Generation X grew up with computers and cell phones and got into the tech industry. Some are now billionaires! I knew a bunch of video game designers in the '90s. The only ill effects of technology on Millennials are cyberbullying, revenge porn and Nigerian dictators ripping them off in their email, lol!

let kids be kids ffs. you never know maybe they'll transform from this to being really into heavy music, maybe the'll make some on their own. there are no clips of you doing such things because the times were different. now tiktok is a massive platform that connects people and living through a pandemic definitely made young people more prone to using it and being absorbed by it it's always good to be critical of what's going on but don't forget to try to understand why is it happening

There will allways be morrons who give other people (men and women) a hard time for stupid reasons. But as a Metalhead you can usually spot pretty easily who is genuine and who is not. If a woman is indeed genuine, there is no reason why she wouldn't be accepted in the same way as anybody else. But if a man or woman is not genuine, they wont be accepted regardless of what gender they happen to be.
