They made the song after hearing the worries of thousands of teens from Japan. So in Japan when you turn 18 they can vote on political issues but the older generations belittle their opinions like “you’re to young you don’t have any say in what goes on in politics” so they are frustrated because they are considered adults at 18 but yet their opinions don’t matter. So after hearing around a thousand videos of teenagers saying how frustrating it is one ok rock made the song we are for them. And had a special performance called fes18 with the 1000 teens. It was very touching and I believe that you would love to see that performance.

I just discovered this band, and love this song. Minutes ago I watched a live version with the kids singing along with them, I only wish the whole video had english subtitles, so I could understand what he said to all the kids before they played the song, but it seemed obvious that it was a very heartfelt message to them.

Just to let you know a little bit about the band - It consists of 4 members, Takahiro Moriuchi, or just Taka for short is the vocalist and IMHO one of the best rock voices still out there; Toru is the guitarist and the leader of the band; The bassist you like a lot is Ryota, who is actually married to Avril Lavigne’s sister; finally Tomoya is the drummer and a drumming genius. They don’t have quite the worldwide following of BTS yet, but hopefully are trending that way. They’re obviously huge in Japan, but are trying to blaze the trail for Japanese artists outside of their homeland by transitioning to English and playing lots of small shows to win over crowds in the US and Europe. This song We Are is actually one of Jungkook’s favorites! They also did a short rock version dancing to Dynamite just for fun which you can search up… 😅 Finally, I’d probably agree with the other commenter that the Renegades MV is a good next step. It’s a fully English song that was a collaboration with Ed Sheeran. A lot of lyrics are really meaningful and that song is no exception…

Ohhh can’t wait to hear it! And thank you for the info! I am seriously loving what I’m hearing from them so far and it’s weird lol for me this is the exact opposite way I normally get into bands, like I’ll hear their music THEN see if they are good live but with One Ok Rock I’ve only heard them live and I know they crush it! I love it!

I said before in a previous comment that I’m like you - came from rock and metal and that BTS has been a real eye-opener for me - I’m a die hard ARMY forever… But musically, and from the rock band based background that I came from, OOR just hits different. You’ll hear lots of suggestions for next songs and Renegades is a nice next step for sure. However, their older catalogue is heavier stuff and they draw a lot from late 90’s and early 2000’s emo / modern rock. In fact, they were scheduled to tour with Linkin Park just before Chester left us, and during the US tour the moment of silence in Take What You Want became a tribute to him. I naturally gravitate towards their older heavier stuff but completely understand the musical choices that they’re making trying to break into the international market. If you want an idea of their heavier stuff and to hear Taka scream Deeper Deeper would be a great choice… A last tidbit is that OOR is the favorite rock band for Luke from G.O.T. Games that you interviewed for the Breaking the Stereotype series. Cheers and freakin’ toodles!!

Taka in the clean versions on the albums is always impressive, but Taka's voice mid-tour is just magical. Only once have I experienced him off-key and that was due to poor equipment. Toru once said that they consider their albums to be an invitation to their concert. The real version of their music is a live version. :)

Just to give you a little background on why the audience is so into the song... The song was written for the younger generation 18 year olds. They had young adults submit videos of them, and the band as a whole watched and every one of them and chose 1000 of them to sing this song for the 18 fes. That's a very emotional version to check out. But basically, when the song was written, the legal voting age in Japan had been changed to 18. A lot of the older generation was not for that, thinking that these young adults should just work. The band usually ends their shows with this song because of the impact and message it has. Even as an older guy, this song gets me every time. I found it at a very rough part of my life. And it helped me through. Great reaction! There are a couple of other Japanese bands that you should check out as well!

This is a comment from Japan. I turned 50 and became a fan of theirs this year. I've noticed that the comments on their songs are broadly spread from people in their fifties to people in their seventies who are the same age as me. Many comments have been written that they were attracted to their songs by experiencing life milestones and sad events.

I went to ONE OK ROCK's very first 'one man live' (solo where they didn't have to share the stage with other bands to cover gig costs) at ShibuyaAX all the way back in 2008 when I was an exchange student in Japan. They were still a 5-piece then. Can confirm they've been incredible performers even since then, they were all only around 20 years old at the time with only one full album under their belts (they were promoting a mini album, Beam of Light) but were killing it. Insane talents, honestly. Taka's voice was as raw and emotional then as it is now, even without much life experience. AX was knocked down years ago and I don't recall the capacity, I think there was only around 2000 people there; but they managed to make it feel like an enormous arena performance.

Renegades came out during Covid, so there are sadly no official live recordings of it yet, just tons of live fancams. I’m sure you know how hard it is to sound good on one of those but they still do and here’s one from the closest show to you in Atlanta on their current tour that’s not too bad - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9N_qs13zZaVops.html. However, there is a live in studio acoustic piano-only version that I’d probably go with instead - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gNNzpqSlz9u9Y58.html

One OK Rock routinely sells out concerts in Japan. They are seasoned performers so it’s kinda disappointing that they perform in such small venues in America. I am hoping they’ll be able to perform at Coachella or Lollapalooza next year. Kudos also to the Japanese audience. If you notice, they DO NOT have their phones out. They’re engaged which makes it so fulfilling to perform there. One song you should check out is the sing I Was King performed with a live orchestra.

Their live is so much better than the studio versions. I think the next should be I was King and Push back

Any of their live videos are amazing, especially when they add in an orchestra, it's a whole new experience. Check out Cry Out or I Was King.

It's so cool that the stage was also shaped like a guitar 💥

Revisited this to see how the journey started , you note people emotional and crying in the crowd … if you knew then what you know now …. Nuts 🥜 💪🏼😂

Believe it or not, Taka was putting out this UNREAL performance while he was sick. This song was meant as a show of support for the young people of Japan, who at the time were publicly expressing depression and hopelessness about their future. We Are basically became their anthem.

There is another live version of this song, Called We Are 18 Fes, it had 1000 17-19 year old fans singing as backup during the performance. It's on one of NHKs youtube channels. For music video songs I would suggest either Liar or Renegades. Most other songs are better live.

I think you will react to "Where ever you are" someday, but I think the live performance at ambitions japan tour is the best.

this is seriously one of my favorite bands, they are from Japan but lately most of their songs have been mostly in English with a verse or so in Japanese. i would highly recommend stand out fit in or renegades as music videos to watch, the mv for this song is also amazing, but the one for renegades made me tear up

I’d like to suggest an older song with a kinda heavier sound, Liar MV: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iad4qad2nqyqcXk.html Live: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mcp7jc-BrKvTaKs.html (btw the last 2 minutes or so of this live video is Taka talking, person who uploaded it cut it that way)

Got the privilege of being able to go to their most recent concerts after learning about them probably around 6 years ago by now and honestly they sound so great live as well. I don’t know if you’re still looking for any of their past live stuff to react to but one of my favorites personally is their performance of Ketsuraku Automation at the Saitama Super Arena.
