Back to Reality - In this episode of my Continental Divide Trail Thru Hike Documentary, I hike from Lake City to Salida. Here I hit the 1000 mile mark on the CDT. It's a 109 mile hike over 4.5 days. The trail starts off high and resembles the San Juans for the first 20 miles. After San Luis Peak, the trail passes through the La Garita Wilderness and drops down to 9300', the lowest since northern New Mexico. It's a 35 mile section of relatively easier walking, a bit of a mental break from the rigors of the San Juans. The CDT here passes through San Isabel National Forest. Sections of the CDT in the Gunnison National Forest are multi-use trails, where dirt bikes are also allowed. On my last day before reaching Monarch pass, I saw my first, and 100th, mountain biker on the CDT. The high mountains make a return just before Monarch Pass, and I hope the next section continues this trend!

Mountain bikers rarely yield to hikers for some reason. Lack of trail etiquette education, I suppose 🤔. Great videos, loving the journey!! 👏🏻💪🏻🤙🏻✌🏻👍🏻

It's wonderful seeing all the wildlife on your hikes. One of my favorite things to see on hikes love the fishing story 🎣

Seeing those big horn sheep was very cool. I've only seen them a couple of times before, mostly in the Badlands. Overall I was expecting to see more wildlife on trail though. And that's my all time favorite fishing story! I bet that guys friends didn't believe him when he told the story haha

Yes, it’s so beautiful there. You video cracked me up because there’s such a hiker vs biker thing around here. I’ve been hiking and had bikers piss me off and I’ve been hiking and had bikers piss me off.

The fishing story was so funny!! I am a volunteer with Fish and Wildlife and I had the funny pleasure of catching a spawning male German brn trout...who just kept squirting on me lol

Lucky you! haha. Can't say that's never happened to me too. Fishing stories are the best aren't they? Lots of my favorite family stories happened on fishing trips. Having zany family members helps too haha

Even the rain shots looked great. Sounds like some of those mountain bikers were assholes. Well done on 1k miles!

It was an odd feeling hitting that 1k mile mark. Seems like I had already been walking so long, and that's only 1/3 done. The milestones really put things into perspective for me

My most hated thing on a hike is people on 4 wheels on trails 2nd would be mosquitoes did you use anything to repel them?

That is pretty cool you ran into Dixie on trail. When I hiked a small portion of the CDT I ran into a guy with a trail name of fenway. Your experience with mountain bikers on trail is mutual. They are disrespectful and are hard to share the trail with.

Man, Fenway... I'm almost positive we met at some point but I can't remember when or put a face to the name. Maybe Silver City. I was thinking about all the hikes I did before the CDT and how rarely I ran into mountain bikers in the past. But I realized many of my hikes were in Wilderness areas, no bikes allowed. Fortunately there were few sections on the CDT where hiking and biking trails overlapped, or at least got used by bikers. Almost all of the bikers I saw were in the middle of Colorado.

Motorcycles are allowed, unfortunately, on that section of the CT/CDT.

I think it comes down more to how respectful everyone is of each other's ability to recreate. I followed the CDT on my motorcycle this last summer and had a blast. But I was also very aware of where I could and could not ride on the actual trail and did everything I could to be supportive and nice to hikers and bikers I met along the way. The real answer is assholes should not be allowed anywhere.
